I didn't care for Leinie's Oktoberfest when I tried it. I mean, it isn't horrible, but there are plenty of other better options I'll go to much before the Leinie's version. I really like Summit's Oktoberfest this year, and as was mentioned earlier (I think), Millstream Oktoberfest is absolutely excellent and is probably the best Oktoberfest I have tried, better than the German versions.

He Said (both the Belgian Trippel and the Baltic Porter) by 21st Amendment is/are excellent. This year I have found a few pumpkin beers I like, and these 2 are both on that list. The best pumpkin beer I've tried was the Millstream Pumpkin Imperial Stout. That was amazingly good.

Atwater Brewery Vanilla Java Porter. Not bad. Tastes like good coffee with a hint of vanilla.

Friend just called to tell me that he picked up a bottle of this years George T Stagg for me. The bad news is that I can't get it from him for about 3 weeks. I feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas

While I haven't delved into rums like I have bourbon and vodka...if it's a good enough rum (for me, my expansion has only included Appleton Estate)...it's chilled/on the rocks. Why mix? Same with bourbon. Evan is the min I buy, and Evan is the only one I'd mix.

Because I enjoy a mixer in social situations?

My 20 or so rums are divided (in my mind) into neats, mixers and blenders. All of the ones that I consumed tonight are mixers and each is distinctive enough within that context to be noticeably different and a unique experience. And they're all quite nice and are far, FAR from rail.

I mix my whiskeys too. Don't really care what the liquor snobs think as I've been drinking plenty long enough to know what I like... what tastes good... what's enjoyable to me.

The "Far, far from rail" is what intrigues me. I would NEVER think to mix a Maker's Mark or a Basil Hayden. Hence my question on the higher rums. Honest inquiry here.

None of those are what I'd consider higher rums. They're (high) quality mixers and if I'm gonna have a mixer, it's gonna be a really good mixer.

Remember... rum is really made for mixing. Think of how many rum drinks there are.

My premium quality (neat) rums are for nights on the deck or front porch or for kicking back in the den in front of the fire.

Tonight I was yelling at the TV with friends and family watching the Hawks game. Mixers all around.

And about mixers - I actually really like mixers and blended drinks when the mood takes me. I enjoy a very diverse drinking experience.

Next time you clowns (;)) are in Madison, look me up and you can try a bunch of rums you've never had. :)

Heck, I've had Wiser's 18yo and Coke. Why?

Because I can...

and it tasted **** good.

:p

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Oh yeah, and I'd put Appleton Estate as a high quality mixer (at best).

Ok, I understand, and thank you. :) I do like my mixed drinks and such. Don't get me wrong. For me...it's about diluting or enhancing the quality of the alcohol. That's all.

Clearly, I'm in a mood tonight.

To my palate, certain levels of rum are enhanced by mixing them.

Like I said, I believe that rum is made for mixing (and blending).

I just can't (and won't) do it with the really nice ones. It's almost a respect thing.

Maker's or Basil are not beyond mixing. Stagg, Pappy, and anything else in the 15-18 year range sure. But Maker's and Basil don't quite make it into the non-mixer category.

That being said, I rarely mix bourbons anyways.

Hell, only one store I know of has the Stagg Jr...no leads on Stagg.

And I agree on the rarely mixing bourbons. If I mix, it's Canadian or Irish. Maybe.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I'm just gonna say it...

I don't much care for bourbon.

I've tried, really I have. Just not my thing.

When I drink whiskey, it's either Canadian or Irish - probably makes sense as they are both closer to a rum experience.

Not gonna hate. To each their own.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

If anyone has a lead on a bottle of Stagg, I'll pay 110% of the cost of the bottle (retail) and pick it up myself in the metro area. If it's out of state, we can figure something out.
