Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome!

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I know this may sound absurd, but I had a Schlitz while golfing on Saturday morning before the wedding, and it wasn't nearly as terrible as it should have been. I have tried much worse cheap swill than that stuff.

edit: Also, all indications are that the Spotted Cow and 1554 kegs at the wedding were huge hits. We followed up the 2 kegs of good beer with a keg of Miller Lite, because by that point it really didn't matter. Finished all 3 by 11:00, and had the option of tapping a spare keg they had at the facility, of Coors Light. Decided against it because we didn't want to have a bunch of beer left over.

And a few of us had switched over to scotch at that point. ;)

Natty Bohs (National Bohemian) is a beer originally based around Baltimore but its made by those who make PBR. I consider it not terrible. PBR makes me wretch. Last resort beer.

edit: working through my last spotted cow, wasn't thrilled when I got the six... it disappointed me, but being on number 6 its quite alright. Admittedly, I expected more magic, but if that's a cheap beer out your way I'd certainly drink it.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Spotted Cow is just a simple go-to beer. Half the hype is b/c you can only get it in WI. I like it a lot, for a go-to beer, but it's not even top 20 overall. Probably not top 50.

Pabst Brewing owns the naming rights to most of the cheap beers around the country(PBR, National, Schlitz, Schmidt, Stroh's, Pearl, Lone Star to name a few). The actual brewing is all contracted out to MillerCoors though.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Was at/near Mall of America for a work thingy to start the week and checked out a liquor store therein and scored a bottle of Sea Wynde pot still rum. It's a 92 proof navy style rum and is quite tasty and isn't available back home.

Also hit the muni stores in Apple Valley to look for things I can't get back home and while they had a couple, nothing that I wanted.

The bar in the Radisson Blu (where I stayed) had a nice selection - if overpriced - and I was able to sample some Pyrat Cask 1623. It was sublime - wish I could afford the $220 per bottle. Barkeep was kind enough to give me the sample at no charge - would have been $60 for a pour.

Finally, have taken to enjoying my higher end rums neat and am searching for a few more (online as I've exhausted all possibilities locally) to round out my current collection.

A recent addition is El Dorado 15. I actually prefer the El Dorado 12, but both are very nice.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Oh yeah, we had a work dinner/party at a nearby bar where beer and wine were free and their typical collection of liquor - the same old **** that every other bar has - was I buy myself.

I snuck in a flask of the El Dorado 15 and grabbed a rocks glass and served myself all night. Talk about a liquor snob... ;)

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Gurt, I came across a rum called Matusalem a while back and thought it was the best I've ever had. It was the only rum I found drinkable on its own, on the rocks. Hard to find here in the Twin Cities. Curious if you've had it and what your thoughts are. If you've discussed it already sorry. I'm new to the thread and don't feel like sifting through 645 posts. :)
Other rum recommendations, aside from El Dorado?

Had you said something on here about being in Apple Valley, I could have directed you a few miles west (maybe three) to Blue Max in Burnsville. The AV muni stores aren't known for their vast selections while the private stores in Burnsville are a bit larger and consequently have greater selections.

I wanna say I saw a variety or two of the Matusalem at the largest of the Apple Valley stores on Pilot Knob (iirc). I see them here in Madison, but have yet to try them. The one I'm most interested in is the 18 yr Grand Reserve as it gets the best reviews. Chances are that's what you had?

My favorite rums in no particular order are:

Plantation 20 yr Anniversary
Kirk & Sweeney 12 yr
El Dorado 12
Zacapa 23 yr Solera

I have a number of other aged rums and a bunch of mixing rums, but those are the ones that stand out the most and are the ones I go to first if I'm going to have them neat. I've also mixed each of them with Coke to fantastic results.

The ones I'm hoping to get soon (next few months) are:

Dictator 20 yr
Pussers 15 yr
Phyra Gold
Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva
Dos Maderas P.X. 5+5

Just gotta wait for two bills to free up (for something like this) as postage is better if I buy em all at once.

I asked someone specifically about Blue Max and they didn't think they would have a big selection of the higher end stuff that I was looking for. Almost went there anyway. Next time...

It's a journey, not a race.

Have to keep telling myself that. :o

I don't know about the high-end stuff as I really don't drink much booze, pretty much just a beer guy, but I do know that my S-I-L likes to go to Blue Max because they carry some liquors that AV doesn't. Also, I've always found the AV beer selection to be lacking once you get outside the Miller, Budweiser, and Coors brands.

If you're in that area again, Lakeville (another muni-only city) has a decent sized location on the AV border along 160th St (County Rd 46), across the street from the Galaxie Ave intersection. They might be more of a wine specialty store, though, now that I think of the size of that area of the store.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

For a wedding present we got one of those Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville frozen drink machines. Tried it for the first time last night, and it was fantastic. You just throw your liquor and juices/mixes in the jar thing, and push a button, and in 10 seconds you have a slushy tropical drink. They give you 4 basic recipes, and then you can expand from there. We made the standard margaritas last night, and they were very good, and then I tried to make a banana rum drink that was ok, but not great, it was missing something, that I have yet to put my finger on.

I think I've been to that store, the one with all the different Scotch right? Last time I was in the cities, for the FF in 2011, a friend who's really into Scotch dragged the rest of us into a liquor store in the Mall of America to look for interesting bottles. We picked up some Sailor Jerry for the room; then, of course I got a horrible respiratory infection that ruined my weekend, lasted until I got home, and almost ruined my second date with the woman who is now my wife.

There is some decent selection at that MOA store, but there are better liquor stores for selection in the area.

If you're a beer guy, you need to get to the Blue Max. They claim 1,000+ different beers in stock, and I swear the staff have tried them all. Great recommendations no matter what you're looking for. I've expanded my beer knowledge/tastes 10-fold since I started going there. Top notch stuff.

But, they do lack in liquor selection beyond the commercial brands and a few of the fancier stuff, but nothing truly high-end that you can't find elsewhere.

Good stuff, thanks. I had the 15-year Grand Reserve, have yet to try the 18-year. I will have to look harder in Apple Valley for Matusalem because I've only found it at Serdyk's in Minneapolis. And that's just too far to drive for me. Most of the time. :)

Left Hand returns to Iowa in 10 days. I've missed my sawtooth ale and milk nitro stout.

Now if Long Trail would ever distribute west of the Appalachians, life would be great.

A store near me (it's located in Hopkins) has over 1000 beers, or so they say. I don't doubt them. One drawback: the vast majority are not in coolers.
