Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome!

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Nothing was sounding good to follow the wine with, so I opened a second bottle...

Wollersheim Dry Riesling

This is from a winery that is just up the road along the Wisconsin River where there is a micro climate (the river valley) that is perfect for growing grapes for the wines that they make.

Cool place to go for a tour/tasting and they have an outdoor area where you can buy a bottle to drink (or more) and sit outside and enjoy it in this setting...

<a href="http://imgur.com/9hcmQF1.jpg"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/9hcmQF1.jpg?1" title="Hosted by imgur.com" /></a>

They used to have a grape stomp festival in the fall and let you take your bottle into the vineyard and sit amongst the vines, but like anything else that's cool, it got too big and now you have to stay in the designated area.

Anyway... nice wines and a treasure to have something like this right here in Wisconsin - and only 25 minutes from my door. :)

Need to go more often...

Going to try some local Ecuadorian cerveza. I was told that Club is better than Pilsener. Apparently those are the only 2 choices. Might be switching to rum drinks, since that would be appropriate given the climate.

Can't imagine the beer is all that good, but you never know.

A poster on a rum board that I frequent recommends these rums in Ecuador:

San Miquel

Norteño

Pagaro Azul

Ron Mitad del Mundo

Ron de Chimborazo

I have no experience with any of them. Have fun with that. Wish I could explore those unknowns...

I will have to try some of that rum tomorrow. I ended up trying a Club tonight, it was slightly better than Heineken, so...still not good, but is was served in a frosty mug and was ice cold so it was drinkable. After that we stuck to wine because it was free with dinner, and was actually pretty tasty stuff.

Backsplash is up. Now, I'm told I have to wait three days for this to cure before grouting?

Seems like an excessive amount of time. Anyone have tile experience?

Looking good! (The reflected bottle collection too, of course.) Any way you could work in some side lighting rather than just from above? Personally, I really like the look of light shining through brown liquor, especially with the mirror back there to enhance it.

So, the Frozen Four. We drank a lot.

Thanks!

Shelves came in today and I plan on grouting tomorrow AM, so the next photo will be of the finished project. Just in time for the Stanley Cup playoffs!

As far as lighting, I'm not sure what else could be done with the current layout as the shelves are essentially floating on the wall with no end caps. I'm hoping (and anticipating) that the light from above will travel through the glass shelves and give everything a nice glow - or at the least, light it all up.

We'll see.

They're pricey, but it might be worth looking into the LED lights that you can manually change colors. I have 8 of the LIFX bulbs (the massive Kickstarter campaign a year or 18 months ago). Phillips makes some, I believe as well. Would be neat to do different colors sometimes, I would think.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

3M makes my favorite LED bulbs. Even taking into account my inherent bias in favor of them, I've liked the light they give off more than the Phillips bulbs I own. The Phillips bulbs have been relegated to my crawlspace, garage, and other areas where light quality isn't important. Two different colors are offered but they aren't changeable.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Would the led lights be in addition to the overhead or as a replacement?

Would they be placed somewhere along the shelves? How would they be powered?

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I've seen under-cabinet LED lighting done fairly nicely. I've never done it myself but my buddy who installed them isn't an electrical guy and managed it. I'm sure that Google could yield some ideas/solutions (I don't mean for this to come off the wrong way).

It isn't. I've seen some led box lights where the bottles are basically sitting on a shelf that is a box and allows the light to come from below the bottles.

That wouldn't work with the current design (which isn't changing at this point) and was wondering if there were other ways to use the lights.

Looking at the pictures you have posted, it would most likely screw in to your overhead lights, replacing the current bulbs. The LIFX set up, which you can find videos of on youtube, are offered in edisons, bayonets and down lights. You can change from numerous shades of white (colder bluer hues and warmer yellowish hues, and everything in between) as well as every color possible via a color wheel via their app for android/apple. The lights connect to your wifi, and your smartphone/tablet communicates with lights through the same wifi connection.

It may not be feasible or wanted by you, but was just a thought. Obviously the second/third shelves down may not get the lighting effect, but the top certainly would. A red/white coloring for BADger events would look pretty slick ;)

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Those lights are interesting and it might be cool to let them slowly cycle through some random colors during a party.

I'll need to give it some thought.

Bought a 6 pack of Flying Dog Imperial Coffee Stout. As you might not have known, I am a big fan of coffee stouts. This is not bad. Expensive, but not bad.

Got it done 10 minutes before puck drop.

Quite pleased... :)

Put the Bacadi and Cruzan rums in the back room so the top shelf (rums) isn't so crowded and those are my lowest quality ones.

For the new whiskeys, I went with Elijah Craig for a bourbon and Pike Creek for a Canadian blended. I like Maker's, but wanted to try something a little different.

Also bought myself a little treat for completing the project...

Ron Zacapa Solera 23 yo rum

:)

I spy with my little eye a bottle of Tune Up! :)

After viewing that pic, I feel I'm less of an alcoholic now. :p

And IMO, Elijah Craig 12 is going to be unpopular with a majority of guests - they will absolutely "feel the burn", and the taste is aggressive to say the least - that said, frankly my most recent sampling of Maker's wasn't much better and cost $5-6 more per fifth. So there you go.

For non-mixer, I think EC12 is the best cheap bourbon you can buy (cheap as in generally that price range, which would include Maker's); the $20-25 range. Take a step up to the $35-40 range, and I will stand by New Holland's Beer Barrel Bourbon or Woodford Reserve, and if you're lucky, Maker's 46.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

The regular Woodford is overrated. Give me Maker's 46, Yellow Rose Blended or Outlaw, and Four Roses Small Batch/Single Barrel (both of them) over that anyday.

The Woodford Double Barrel on the other hand...if you're going to spend $45-55 on a bottle, it's either that or the Yellow Rose Double Barrel.

$50, it's Stagg Jr, or the Woodford double.

I was immensely upset when I found out they stopped making the EC18 in favor of a 21 that's gotten good to tepid reviews and jacket up the price big time. The EC18 used to be my favorite lighter bourbon.
