First, read the Comments on this. (Read the whole thing, really, it's good.)

What are the college hockey equivalents? Using the notation:

Lesser Rival - Arch Rival (Arch Rival’s Arch Rival)

-----------------------------

Cornell - Harvard (Yale)

Colgate - Cornell (Harvard)

Quinnipiac - Yale (Harvard)

RPI - Clarkson (SLU) ? Not sure about this one. Who is RPI's arch rival?

Others?

If you went to RPI before 2006 and care about hockey, Clarkson. If you went to RPI after 2006 or don't care about hockey, Union. We have no rivalry with SLU whatsoever.

Re: Drew Magary Memorial Asymmetrical Rivalry Thread

Wisconsin - Minnesota (NoDak) ?

For football, it's obviously:

Michigan St - Michigan (Ohio St), but for every other sport it definitely seems to go OSU - UM (MSU).

You're right, I reversed them. D'oh!

Fixed below. Thanks.

It varies. There have been times when that's been a legit three-way rivalry. Might have been a time here or there where you could swap Wisconsin and NoDak but maybe not too often.

In football, I think you could also say Iowa - WI/MN (MN/WI)

Re: Drew Magary Memorial Asymmetrical Rivalry Thread

Minnesota schools-Minnesota (North Dakota and Wisconsin)
Just among NCHC teams:
SCSU, UMD, UNO-North Dakota (Denver)
North Dakota-Denver (CC)

That reminds me of the diehard Hawkeye fan I met in Indy last December for the title game who actually went to Minnesota. I had to do a double take. I know some who went to MSU and stayed Michigan fans, but it's one of those things where it's still strange to encounter no matter how many times it happens.

Re: Drew Magary Memorial Asymmetrical Rivalry Thread

This is outdated now, for awhile in women's college basketball it was

Notre Dame - UConn (Tennessee)

Pat Summitt's medical condition closed off the latter.

In pro football, is it
Vikings - Packers (Bears) ?

Re: Drew Magary Memorial Asymmetrical Rivalry Thread

Reminder, the notation is:

Lesser Rival - Arch Rival (Arch Rival’s Arch Rival)

e.g.

Cornell - Harvard (Yale) reads "Cornell hates Harvard but Harvard hates Yale"

The North Country is circular

Clarkson - St. Lawrence (Clarkson)

Re: Drew Magary Memorial Asymmetrical Rivalry Thread

Everyone in western hockey-Minnesota-UND/WI.

/tArrogance has spoken.

Clarkson - St. Lawrence (Clarkson)

Harvard - Yale (Harvard) is circular, too.

John Stewart's immortal line about being a Mets fan:

Phillies - Mets (Mets)

Re: Drew Magary Memorial Asymmetrical Rivalry Thread

For the Detroit Lions, I want to say:

Bears- Lions (Packers)

But I am not sure...

Re: Drew Magary Memorial Asymmetrical Rivalry Thread

I would say it's:

Lions - Packers (Bears)

The latter two are the closest thing we have to a rival, but neither one takes us seriously (and with good reason).
