Re: Dr. Clayton Forrester's Science Roundup

<strike>Let me get this straight. Two mega-corporations said we need to ground these aircraft </strike>

Nix that. That's a really clunky headline. It should have read, "Boeing and GE were Warned..."

Getting back to the story. Yeesh, that's not good. Now what?

I dunno, but I wish LynahFan would comment because he knows the industry and it could all be BS (c.f., if there's an estimate that a medication could cause death once in one million doses and that happens, a tabloid could run a "THEY WERE WARNED!!!" outrage headline.

Ironically, I've been traveling for work - to a company whose initials rhyme with pee-pee...so I haven't had a chance to catch up on this one.

Cursory reading of the article makes me want to throttle a journalist. It seems like the engine that had this issue isn't even the same model that GE/Boeing were warned about - it was an earlier "version." I put version in quotes because not all versions are created equal - sometimes a version means they changed one bolt to save cost, and sometimes it means they kept the nameplate (for marketing reasons) and dropped in an entirely new engine. So it's possible the part that was known to have the issue on the "new" engine doesn't even exist on the "old" one.

Alabama nudges ahead of Pakistan in being receptive to science.

Alabama updated its science education standards for the first time in a decade, requiring schools to teach students about evolution and human activity's impact on climate change, starting in 2016.

I thought silver was the big one in terms of antimicrobial surfaces. Interesting.

Silver also works in that application, but still a little pricier. Both also require water to be present to be effective, but there is moisture on the hand on contact so...

I have to assume that gold has similar properties then being in the same group.

I don't know, I never heard it being discussed as an option, only silver and copper. When I did a lot of healthcare work it was a big issue for us. Much discussion of plating everything from doorknobs to handrails. There is a company making a silver lined ductwork for hospital applications. Incredibly thin coating, of course. The issue is stuff doesn't normally grow inside ductwork, except where moisture is present and the coating is so thin it may not last where the moisture is (drain pans, humidifiers, etc.). I had one client in east Texas who had a cooling coil in an air handler that he could not keep clean, it would foul with biologic growth within weeks of cleaning. They replaced the copper tube/aluminum fin cooling coil with a copper-copper coil and the problem went away.
