Division III College Hockey's Top 10 Rivalries

Re: Division III College Hockey's Top 10 Rivalries

My first SNC game was an SNC/Point game. Nov. 6 2002. Classic case of the rivalry back then. 30 penalties with 100+ minutes including a fight after the game that involved SNC's Lenny Rampone. That got me hooked by the way.

I miss Rampone complete with his hip checks and big mouth!

It didn't take me long to figure out to watch Rampone anytime he trailed the play.
He was quite the agitator. He probably got away with more slashing penalties than any other player in the history of SNC hockey.
Still hear opposing fans talking about him, especially @ Point/Superior.

Not as much as people in Point talk about Rob May. It still pains me to know I missed the infamous Rob May-Forrest Gore incident as the first Point game I attended was the following week.

There has to be video of that somewhere. Somehow, me having to go through life knowing that happened and that I didn't get to see it...just isn't right. :)

I heard that there is a video out there about the May/Gore affair.
I still love hearing someone, who was there, describe the events leading up to the battle.:):)

You "heard"???

This is not a time for rumors and conjecture. This is a time for action. Whether you choose to accept this mission or not, your job is to go find me this video you "heard" about. And that...is an order. :)

I got to believe that SNC was video taping the games at that time...maybe still in the achieves somewhere....Let me check around!!!!

Id like to see a video of an entire game from back then. Point-SNC, SNC-UWS, whatever. Might be interesting to see what it looks like relative to today's games as well as to our memories.

What kind of battle wad this, a Carey Price v. Tim Thomas, or Rocky v. Ivan Drago?

Especially games at the De Pere Ice Arena.....small as a pill box, but when this place was packed it was REAL loud!!!!!

From memory:
Gore gets involved in a scrum in front of the SNC goal.....tosses one of the SNC sticks down the ice.....skates in front of the SNC bench and gives them the single finger salute....May comes off the bench and processed to battle with Gore at center ice.
Understand that the crowd nearly blew the roof off the Willet during the ensuing fight.
Historic battle in NCHA history..
XYZ -- fill in any other details that I missed.

I wasn't there so I really don't know. I've heard it told a few ways, but I think it usually involves Gore scoring late to ice the game and then taunting the SNC bench (in some capacity). Over the boards hopped May who proceeded to beat the tar out of Gore.

That could all be completely wrong, though.

Based on that it would have to have been in the 5-3 UWSP win on 1/2/98 as it was their only regular season win over SNC that year, but that doesn't make sense as I don't know why I would have been in Point and not home on break. I'm positive I was there this night as my roommate and his buddy came back and told me there had been a fight. Perhaps the "scoring to ice it" bit is some sugar-coating by UWSP fans and it was actually in the 2-0 SNC win on 11/1/97. Has to be one of the two. Great, now all Ive done is succeeded in confusing myself even more with all this.

This is why you need to get that video you "heard" about...

Edit: This board is the only place anyone in the country gets DIII news from. There's gotta be someone hiding around here who was at this game and can settle this...

Re: Division III College Hockey's Top 10 Rivalries

I've had a UWS fan tell me that SNC/UWS is a pretty hot rivalry out West.

Is this true?

And by the way, I just can't see Plattsburgh/Norwich in the Top 10.

I've had an Oswego fan tell me that Platty/Wego is a pretty hot rivalry out East.

For some reason I don't remember this game, and I was obviously there. I can remember just about every game I was ever at but I'm drawing a complete blank on this one.

No doubt I was at this one as well and I have no recollection of it, either.

maybe if I gave the right date of Nov 8 that may help. The fight happened right in front of me by the SNC tunnel.

video archive? no way! beautiful fight, good color, contrast is good. Point fans unhappy, May is SNC hero. No way that video exists. :)

Click for the box score.

28 penalties, 89 minutes. So there was a slight bit of exaggeration on your part there ;)

15 for 41 UWSP, 13 for 48 SNC

The difference in the penalty numbers appears to be this 2nd period incident

SNB-7 John Donnelly (5-Checking from Behind) WSP 0x5 14:25
SNB-8 John Donnelly (10-Game Disqualification) 14:25

And I'm guessing this is the fight to which you were referring:

WSP-12 Sean Leahy (5-Fighting) 20:00
WSP-13 Sean Leahy (10-Game Disqualification) 20:00
WSP-14 James Jernberg (2-Roughing) 20:00
WSP-15 James Jernberg (2-Roughing) 20:00
SNB-10 Lennie Rampone (5-Fighting) 20:00
SNB-11 Lennie Rampone (10-Game Disqualification) 20:00
SNB-12 Michael Buchan (2-Roughing) 20:00
SNB-13 Michael Buchan (2-Roughing) 20:00
