Division I Rutter Rankings for 2013-2014

Re: Division I Rutter Rankings for 2013-2014

Some early season predictors had NEU in the same mix as Providence, but you are right, the Friars and Eagles are the two most perplexing teams from HE sofar. … Same cannot be said for BC and PC at this point.
FYP. PU is Princeton.

Interesting to see the movement of the actual numbers from one week to the next.

2 Wisconsin 1.95 Up to 1.96 Despite good road weekend vs UND only up by 0.01
3 Cornell 1.62 Down to 1.61 Down 0.01 point, did not play, but moves up a spot.
4 North Dakota 1.77 Down to 1.57 0.20 down, lose one spot.
5 Harvard 1.26 UP to 1.37 0.11 points up thanks to win over BU
6 Boston Univ.	0.96 Down to 0.87 0.09 down, loss to Harvard plus a win over NR opponent.
7 Clarkson 0.59 Up to 0.83 Biggest positive move this week, both point wise (0.24) and rank (+2)
8 UMD 0.95 Down to 0.74 0.21 down due to split with Bemidji

What I like about this table is that it shows the clear divide lines. Gophers still way out there. Tight grouping in the 6-10 slots. Only two teams outside the top 10 still under consideration but barely so as there is a clear separation between 10 and 11.

A double loss against a team below you can result in a 0.2 to 0.3 move down. Similarly a double win weekend against teams above you can move you upwards with the same velocity. The exception is the Gophers. If they were to lose two in a row, their number would simply plummet back to the pack.

Re: Division I Rutter Rankings for 2013-2014

Looking farther down your list, a few surprises to me:

- Do we really think Yale is better than Northeastern...... that's a tough one to believe.
- Brown has pretty much bottomed out - it doesn't appear to be getting better there.
- Union above the bottom 5 - success of sorts... it's all relative

RPI and KRACH have Yale above Northeastern as well. From what I've seen of the Huskies, they are very inconsistent, even within games. I doubt that there is much separation between Yale and Northeastern in either direction.

Yale and Northeastern have played 8 common opponents this season. (Four of them Northeastern played twice, Yale none.)
Here's how they each did in their first matchup with their common opponents:

vs Union Northeastern W 2-1 Yale W 6-4
vs RPI Northeastern W 2-1 Yale W 2-1
vs Cornell Northeastern L 2-6 Yale L 0-3
vs Providence Northeastern L 3-4 Yale W 5-1
vs Boston U Northeastern L 2-3 Yale L 1-2
vs BC Northeastern L 1-6 Yale L 3-4
vs Dartmouth Northeastern W 2-1 Yale L 4-5
vs Harvard Northeastern L 2-3 Yale W 2-0

Northeastern 8 game Aggregate
16 GF 25 GA
3W 5L
Yale 8 game Aggregate
23 GF 20 GA
4W 4L

Though the differences between the two teams may not be great, on the above basis, what makes it hard to believe?

There is your reason. The difference in ranking between Yale/NW and Harvard is big. Yale gets a lot of credit for that win that offsets any differences in other results.

Although that win had yet to occur at the time the original comment was made.

Re: Division I Rutter Rankings for 2013-2014

If I've done the math right, it looks like the 4 biggest upsets of the year (by difference in Rank) are:
1. RPI over Harvard
2. Yale over Harvard
T3. RPI over Robert Morris
T3. Lindenwood over Syracuse.

If you rank them instead by "Rating", and if you include shoot-out wins, the last one on the list drops off, and Ohio State over Minnesota moves to the top of the list.

I think that RPI owns the title for having the biggest spread of Win/Loss upsets, having beaten #5 Harvard and having lost to #30 Connecticut.

For the purpose of Rutter Rankings (and anything else that is on a national basis) shootout wins are ties.

RPI has the distinction of beating not one, not two but three top ten teams, Harvard, RMU and Quinnipiac. Not sure how many other teams not ranked in the top 15 or have that distinction. ( I suspect none).

Not to mention a tie against #9 Boston U. Although likely to finish somewhere in the #5-#8 range within the ECAC, I would think that they would be the opponent that the top 4 teams would least like to face in round 1 of the playoffs, given their record against strong teams.

LakersFan has been slipping a little bit -- I had to dust this off from Page 2. It's already outdated because of the mid-week games this week, but here's the list for games played through February 2, 2014

Code:

1 Minnesota 2.55	1
2 Wisconsin 1.82	2
3 North Dakota 1.38	3
