Division 1 Hockey Schools in close proximity

BC/HE

Registered User
With Bentley playing Boston College for the first time this weekend I started thinking this may be one of the closest pairs of NCAA Division 1 schools around. While they are less than 6 miles apart they are not even in the top 8. Boston area schools BC, BU, Northeastern and Harvard are all within 5 miles of each other. Bentley is even closer to Harvard than BC also. However even closer than BU and Northeastern or BU and Harvard, the closest pair of schools is Brown and Providence I believe. Other schools within 10 miles although very close to 10 are Quinnipiac and Yale and Clarkson and St.Lawrence. Bentley and BU and Bentley and Northeastern also come within 10. Beyond that I think the next may be Merrimack and UMass Lowell within 20 miles. Anyone who can correct me or add to this list is most welcome.

RPI and Union are a little closer than Merrimack and UMass Lowell.

Re: Division 1 Hockey Schools in close proximity

Of course it depends if you are measuring by road or point-to-point. Using Google maps here are the distances I checked arena to arena.
shortest miles by road:
Agganis to Bright 2.1
Agganis to Matthews 2.2
Meehan to Schneider 2.7
Agganis to Conte 3.4
Matthews to Bright 4.1
Conte to Bright 4.3
Matthews to Conte 5.1
Bentley to Bright 6.0
Bentley to Conte 6.4
Bentley to Agganis 7.6
Ingalls to People's 8.6
Bentley to Matthews 8.9
Cheel to Appleton 10.8
Tsongas to Lawler 12.3
Messa to Houston 16.1
Cadet to World 22.2
Dwyer to HarborCenter 23.2
Bentley to Tsongas 23.3
MassMutual to Mullins 24.9

straight line miles point-to-point:
Agganis to Bright 1.21
Agganis to Matthews 1.86
Meehan to Schneider 2.07
Agganis to Conte 2.80
Matthews to Bright 2.88
Conte to Bright 3.08
Matthews to Conte 4.26
Bentley to Conte 4.37
Bentley to Bright 4.79
Bentley to Agganis 5.62
Ingalls to People's 6.79
Bentley to Matthews 7.48
Cheel to Appleton 9.67
Tsongas to Lawler 9.86
Messa to Houston 14.25
Cadet to World 16.25
Bentley to Tsongas 18.92

Happy Turkey day all.. so now you've done it.. so i'm trying farthest continental U.S. D1 of course. (with a couple cocktails in, mind you)..

could it be Alabama Huntsville - Alaska Fairbanks?

i know its a globe & we fly over the poles, so i am prob not on target (or am i).. but what the heck. :)

I didn't bother with by road, but Google gave the following for point-to-point miles:
Carlson to Meehan 3267.08
Carlson to Schneider 3265.25
Carlson to Matthews 3247.11
Carlson to Agganis 3245.48
Carlson to Conte 3245.06
Carlson to Bright 3244.34
Carlson to Von Braun 3236.07

So, while Huntsville is a good guess, Boston is a few miles further and Providence is 30 miles further.

Re: Division 1 Hockey Schools in close proximity

Great info Sean. That is exactly what I was hoping to see in your responses. I was looking at campus to campus but rink to rink is far better. I would think by road Anchorage is further than Fairbanks as you cannot drive along the coast in Alaska.

By road Google gives 4,428 miles from Carlson to Meehan and 4,543 miles from Sullivan to Meehan. I can't be sure that they are the shortest distance wise, as Google bases travel routes on time, but I would think they are close. It also gives 3,384.90 straight line miles from Sullivan to Meehan, making it almost 18 mile longer than Carlson to Meehan.

Did you happen to run Alfond arena?

I haven't been able to figure out how to get direct miles from Google Maps, but comparing this to your earlier post, either that should be 3284.90 straight line miles or the distance difference is almost 118 miles.

Why are people asking about the distance to Meehan Auditorium? Even Brown students don't make the trip that often!

You Bus league people are pretty funny.

Did you happen to run Alfond arena?

I get airline distances of 3320 mi Anchorage to Bangor, and 3172 mi Fairbanks to Bangor (12.8 miles south of Alfond).

I get driving distances of 4450.8 mi Anchorage to Orono, and 4334.8 mi Fairbanks to Orono.

Have the Brown Bears or the Maine Black Bears ever played the Nanooks or Seawolves?

Huntsville I wouldn't expect because it's in the Central Time Zone, despite the distance north/south. I'm surprised you didn't include Alfond in this check, as I believe that's the easternmost D-I arena.

EDIT: Someone beat me to it. :o

Brown most likely not, given the Ivy League starts later than the rest of us, and up until a couple years ago, Alaska's non-conference games were their October tournaments and vs. each other. It's possible now, but I don't know if the Ivy League observes non-continental exemptions like the NCAA does.

Maine played UAA in 2014-15.

Maine and Brown have both visited Fairbanks and Anchorage for games. UAA has been to both Brown and Orono, UAF has been to Orono, not Brown.
