Ditching TV (cable/satellite provider)

Re: Ditching TV (cable/satellite provider)

Impulsively I bought a Roku (went with the XD version, $79) last night. I really needed something in the basement. So far I love it. Watched some baseball on MLB.TV (premium) and I thought the quality of picture was very good after about 10 seconds of calibration each time I went to a new game. I have 15 MBPS service from Comcast, which I guess makes a big difference in quality. Even though I was blacked out of the Twins game, I was still able to listen to the radio feed, which is not available on my blue-ray player upstairs, a nice bonus. Netflix worked fine. I waiting on the Hulu Plus free week trial until the wife is back from out of town. Played with some other free apps like Pandora and Tune-In Radio, which will allow me to listen to UMD hockey via the Roku.

To sum up, I was more than impressed on how it worked for me. Reading the reviews since its all streaming, a good internet provider is a big factor.

Re: Ditching TV (cable/satellite provider)

I'd love to ditch Dish, but living where we are (30 miles from State College) Comcast doesn't come out here and the only internet service is crappy 1Mbps DSL from Verizon.

The local cable company literally runs out of the barber shop in town and offers no internet service. OTA signals would require a very expensive antenna because we're at the base of a mountain ridge that blocks the signals from Johnstown.

Only plus is that it's a whole bunch cheaper living out here than in town (property taxes are about 10% of what we'd pay in State College).

Re: Ditching TV (cable/satellite provider)

I thought about going this route but it's just so much easier to have the DVR, two in one, etc on my TV. Plus the sports content. I have DirecTV because I love the extra sports I get with the service. Champions/Europa League soccer, tennis and golf "experiences" at the Majors, Sunday Ticket and the DP Show for starters. I just don't pay full price for it. :) There's no reason for anyone to pay full price for cable/satellite TV. Even if you live out in the sticks, you can still play DishTV and DirecTV against each other.

For me, the value isn't there. If DirecTV tells me to go pound sand when I ask for a price break then I'll reconsider it.

That's what tipped me against Dish. I had got them to give me a good discount for several years, and then one month my bill came and there was no discount. I called them and tried to haggle, but they said they wouldn't discount anymore, at least nothing more than one year a small discount with a commitment to a second year with no discount. No luck looking into DirectTV either. And then they raised my rates significantly on top of no longer discounting. Made the decision a lot easier.

I'm fortunate in that I am a former customer of Dish and my grandmother was one of the first customers of the local Comcast (back then it was Casco Cable) so they're always offering me deals to come back. I just call DirecTV and tell them I want to cancel because Dish/Comcast is offering me this deal. I also never deal with the first person I speak to on the phone. They can't do diddly. The level 2 CSR's can offer virtually anything to keep you as a customer. I have heard that Dish can be real hardasses when it comes to giving discounts. That's probably because their packages are cheaper (and smaller) so they have less room to bargain.
