Direct TV vs Comcast in Mass

There is probably a thread on here somewhere but I am too lazy.

So here is the dilemma--my Comcast cable is up to 72$ for really basic stuff. I do not want to bundle-there are absolute horror stories around here about their phone service snafus like changing the home # when they promise to keep it, lost service, etc.

Direct TV has an offer of free installation in up to 4 rooms, free HD receiver upgrade at 39.99 a month for 12 months then it goes up by 26$. Mr wants to add the sports package for another 13+. He is telling me that we will make out. I am worried about what happens after the deal is over.

Anyone have any experience about this stuff? Thoughts?

Not sure how much longer the NHL will have their holdout with DirectTV, but would that be an issue for the Mr.?

I have DishNetwork, instead. I really like it and haven't had any problems (other than the fact that they can't spell my name). I have the Bronze + package (which does include VS, NESN, etc).

I have Verizon DSL (34.99/mo). I use my ATT email address still so I pay for the home phone to be ATT to keep that. That and ATT has the least spam of any of them and I regularly get Verizon spam without ever using that email address.

NO NHL? or is there a way around that?

You'll get the Bruins' games (as long as they're not on VS) because they're all on NESN. You'll get NHL on Sunday whenever NBC decides to start that up again. Otherwise, that's it. (of course, DirectTV might resolve their issues with VS...)

I switch regularly and have had both DirecTV and Dish Network. They're both good but I have switched to DTV since I want Sunday Ticket. I was going to add the sports package (for $14) and Starz ($12) but decided it would be worth it to go with Premiere and just get everything. Right now there is a disagreement between DTV and Time-Warner over Versus, so that's dark - so no NHL and some college football games. But we do get the NHL Network and B's games are available on NESN. Also Center Ice is available for out of market games. DTV also has the 101 which shows Deadwood, Oz, Friday Night Lights and simulcasts the Dan Patrick Show.

If you go with DTV, let me know...they're running a promotion and if you use my account # when you place your order we both get $100 :)

Then its just a matter of which Sat service you like. I have Dish, its fine for me probably Direct has more sports.

Re: Direct TV vs Comcast in Mass

Not having Vs. loses you 54 NHL regular season games. So its not that many, but it might be more than you are willing to miss.

I liked DirectTV when I had it. I only switched to Verizon because they didn't offer internet service in my town, and I got a package deal with the new company (Verizon is okay, I would consider switching back though). DirectTV also gives out the best promotions, its generallly a year of cheaper service.

Re: Direct TV vs Comcast in Mass

I've been a DirectTV subscriber for over ten years. I can't get cable where I live. I'm on my third dish, since I had the HD added. Rover's right about promotions, I regularly get coupons for buy one get on free pay per view and specials on premium packages. Since we went to the HD dish I've experienced less interference from storms, but it still occasionally happens during heavy rain and snow. We used to use Hughesnet for our internet, but ditched that POS as soon as Qwest DSL became available.

Re: Direct TV vs Comcast in Mass

We have an older TV- not HD. Does this make any difference?

Not as far as new customer offers no. You will still get cheap or free services.

Then when you do eventually upgrade to HDTV, if you have been a customer you will most likely get the receiver and new dish for free (instead of $99-$299).

Edit: Looking at the prices for DTV packages for me (existing customer), it looks like this. You will of course get a better price initially.

50 Channels - $29.99
150 Channels - $55.99 (MLB, NFL networks incl.)
200 Channels - $60.99 (NHL Network incl.)
200 Channels + HD - $75.99
265 Channels - $109.99 (FSN channels incl.)

First add on package is $12.99, each one after is cheaper.
So if you add Sports Pack (FSN, etc.) to the 150 channel package, it would be $68.98

Adding HD on its own is always $10 a month, and DVR is $5.99 a month.

So there are different dishes/receiver thingys depending on the TV?

There is only a couple options.

Dishes:
1) 2-line Dish - Standard TV
2) 2-line Dish - HDTV

You don't have to use 2 lines, but you would need both cables to use DVR effectively and it doesn't cost more.

Receivers:
1) Standard TV Receiver
2) HDTV Receiver
3) Adding DVR to either of those options.

No, what JF said.

As of Black Friday HDTV's will be dirt cheap (they already are pretty cheap - I bought a 22" HDTV for $209) so you may want to upgrade.

I got the HD/DVR receiver free when I signed up. Another would have cost $199. If you choose not to go the HD route, you can get a standard DVR receiver for free. The receivers for the other rooms are free.
