Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

I've adopted a "Paleo-ish" meal plan, meaning I still eat mostly meat, vegetables, and fruit, but will make exceptions for full-fat dairy, dessert, and beer.

That being said, in terms of Paleo websites, I'll stick to The Clothes Make the Girl and Stupid Easy Paleo. I'm really not a huge fan of Paleo desserts, agreeing with Dallas and Melissa Hartwig's stance that such foods are "sex with your pants on."

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

I find these fad diets are rarely sound nutritional advice. Ever.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

I went towards the DASH diet, which aims to reduce your sodium intake in order to reduce your high blood pressure. After going to a neurologist regarding my migraines, we discovered that my blood pressure was through the roof. Like, borderline get-your-***-to-the-ER-right-this-minute high. 155 over 115 was one of the readings, and the others were similar.

Given my family's history with heart attacks, I've got to do something. Treadmill in the morning when I get up, and either weights or more treadmill when I get home, along with DASH. Now, I'll admit that I fall off the wagon more often than an alcoholic at a liquor store, but I'm doing this more and more.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

155 isn't terrible.

I've had mine as high as 190ish (repeated measurements with two machines) when I was taking a prescreening for work. I don't know why I was nervous but I was.

My brother has seen higher than 200 in people in the hospital when he was working.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

From what I've read, 160 over 120 is the threshold for going to the ER. My mom was in the 190 range at the doctor's office one day and they told her that she should be having either a heart attack or a stroke at the moment. She felt fine.

Either way, given that side of the family's history, and the fact that I'm staring 40 right in the face, I need to take much better care of myself. This is the first step.

Regarding biking...

Love blowing by other riders in their full bike outfits on their $1500+ bikes while riding my 1989 Centurion in regular shorts, a t-shirt, running shoes and no toe clips.

Oh... you have matching biking outfits? How cute... :D

Does anybody have a good tool for calculating distances when the paths used do not follow the roads?

Geodistance.com has a satellite view, but if you are talking about single track paths through the woods, you can't really make them out most of the time. Town bike paths and rail trails you can often make out.

That was a great help, thank you.

Got a blood pressure monitor today. 148/93 early this evening. 131/83 just now. *shrug* Probably the first one is more accurate.

We'll get this figured out. It's a process, man.

BP fluctuates in the day- circadian rhytms- worst early AM, best about 3 AM. It can go up and down a lot.

I think the health care workers are always astonished that my blood pressure is normal. They don't think a fat person can be otherwise healthy.

Nice. I've been wondering when this trend of bike outfits started. It seems that all the road cyclists around here have their little spandex outfits now. I never see anyone in just normal shorts.

I see a lot of people who are heavy and have great BP. And have normal Blood Sugar. Later on in life those things tend to catch up but when younger they look good.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

So I was planning on starting my first stab at P90X today. I get an e-mail from UPS saying, "A late UPS trailer arrival has caused a delay. We're adjusting plans to deliver your package as quickly as possible." On another page, the reason is given as "LATE TRAIN".

Dammit all... I swear UPS's Hodgkins, IL facility causes a 1-2+ day delay with every effing package that has gone through there since Thanksgiving. So frustrating. I had this all timed out so I could start on a Monday and have Sunday be the "down" day with the stretching disc. That would line up really well with soccer since I play on Sunday afternoons.

Seems fairly reasonable as a rule of thumb. Almost impossible to follow, but good advice nonetheless.

Yep, I eat lots of vegetables and lots of fruit. The challenge for me, as a runner anyway, is to get my energy from real food, not from food-based products. Companies like PowerBar, Clif Bar, GU, etc, all have convenience products that I can use, but I'd rather make stuff like energy bars and sports drinks myself, than take my chances with Gatorade and Powerade.

And I bought a used GPS, a Garmin Forerunner 305. It's a good introduction to GPS training, and I think if I like it, I can upgrade or buy an entirely new model.

How are you liking using a Forerunner? Just curious... contemplated getting one myself.

I'm up to 5 miles in HM training.

Bob, look into Lara Bars, they usually have just a handful of ingredients (dates, some nuts, and fruit juices) with no preservatives or additives, and are packed with a few hundred calories in just a few ounces of bar. The ones with more of a fruit component (lime, cherry, lemon) are great for running since they don't dry out my mouth.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

I recently started doing small things to slowly get my legs back into shape, for instance I just started walking 2.4-3.5 miles at a brisk pace each day. Well, this Medifast diet I've been following has me at about 1300 calories/day and I started to get lightheaded recently. I think it's from too few calories for simply adding walking into my daily routine. Yesterday I started making an effort to add more quality calories back into my diet so that I can keep doing something more than just sitting around the house. I'm getting really antsy and want to get back on the ice ASAP, but that's probably going to have to wait until the weightloss is complete and I move into the maintenance phase of life.

On the plus side, I'm down 67.8lbs since February 18.
