Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Our chiropractor does crossfit and has been trying to get my son to go do it. I'm going to try and make it happen. I fear I'm too old and broken down for it. :(

It is scalable for everyone!!!

I've been reading... and admittedly on a message board who is controlled by a person who had a falling out with the crossfit program... that crossfit is appropriate more for those who are looking for specified training when they are already in good shape... in other words, able to lift more than I can right now. Truth be told, I don't know what I'm knocking. All I know is if I had known about what I know now in high school i would have played football and more than held my own.

That's what I've seen said on the internet... no experience in it whatsoever... crossfit seems like a drain of money that can be taken care of with a good power rack and access to a track.

Depends on what you are motivated by. I phone in workouts all the time on my own. But if I am with people that I am working out with generally dont. So yeah, some of what I am paying for is accountablity. I need some sort of group activity to keep me motivated and accountable, and I have longer term goals than just putting in 20 miles a week of running and I think crossfit can help me get there.

I am sure some people have success with it at home, but I have a small apartment, I know nothing about lifting, or weights, or putting a program together, never mind multiple programs. I just put miles on my feet, and I know I need to be doing more than that. Yeah then that is a product for me. Just like different eating programs work for different people.

And additionally, I am in a new town, I know two people, I am having a hard time finding a hockey team that doesnt play at some crazy hour. The people at crossfit were friendly and not friggen meat heads, it will be nice to get out of the apartment and interact with humans that I don't work with.

EDIT: I should also note that I have two friends that have been doing crossfit in Natick for about 6 months now. They enjoy it, they don't have some specific training goals, but they like to just improve at whatever they do. They are C level hockey players, not superstars, play adult league soccer. They just want to be fit, enjoy life, sports and their dogs.

My first visit at crossfit was last night. AND I LOVE THAT PLACE!!! I want to start right up right now, soon as I get my wheelchair over to the place.

I'd never even heard of CrossFit until you mentioned it, but doing some research, it sounds really interesting. There is a place that does it not far from me, and the prices seem reasonable. I think I'll look into it.

I totally understand needing the group for motivation - I am really lazy when I'm on my own. :o Less so with aerobic exercises, but I wimp out on the weights when I'm alone.

In the end i think its a matter of what you want to do. I'm not trying to knock it too much... but I think a teenager should be putting his/her effort in the weight room and letting life/practice take care of the rest. Mostly I'm thinking along the lines of "if I had to do it again". I've put on gains fairly quick after puttering around the gym for a year and a half. I'd think a teenager should bulk themselves up quick (4-6 months) and then focus on the conditioning aspects.

there are 40 year olds who post their routines and I wish to god I could be in that shape now.

Age is not an issue.

Just do crossfit at the gym your at. No need for anything special. All lifts are simple even though special form is needed for squats, deads, clean and jerks, and any shoulder presses. Its easy to fall out of crossfit, since its so much more difficult than the regular work out. I don't even do all the work outs all the time, just whenever I can.

Oh yeah, and scale it.

I am not sure where you are in the Metro Boston Area, but my friends have been going to the one in Natick. So you will meet some hockey chikas there.

Crossfit is not just bulking up, there are endurance, pylometrics, conditioning, gymnastics (or body weight exercises) and other aspects of fitness addressed in the routines. Someone could go 2-3 days a week and address there overall sports conditioning and still spend time in their own specific sport area. Tooo much of ANYTHING is pretty much bad for you. You can find studies done on running too much, doing too much cardio, etc etc. Balance and scale is key with everything.

I will admit I took issue to you knocking it. But I know when I was in HS I certainly could of used a total body conditioning program to sublement my hours on the track. It proably would of elimnated all my shin splint issues and back issues. That an buying a pair of shoes more often than once a year.

I'm actually in CT now, not Boston (unfortunately. :( ). Less hockey, more wealthy, stay-at-home soccer moms. (No offense to any soccer moms out there...)

Winger is pretty much correct here.

Bulking up != athleticism. Crossfit is not about bulking up, but making you into an overall conditioned person. I posted this in last years thread, but the circuits recommended by the USNDT are very similar to crossfit workouts. Hockey specifically is more than about raw strength - agility, speed, endurance, and flexibility. Crossfit hits on everything, and not just the bulking up part.

I am happy at my modest 180 lbs. Another 5-10 lbs without adding any fat and I am about the size of your average NHL forward in my height class. Being any bigger just slows you down. I'd rather have a higher bench and squat than be bigger.

Ahhh yeah. Which makes me thing maybe I should see if I can find an indoor place to play out here.

I think if I want to continue playing hockey with women I am going to have to resign to the fact that I have to play on friday and saturday nights. LAME. I want my SSWHL league!

Most adult hockey I've found is all insanely late at night. I understand that you can't give the kids the 11pm slot, but I don't want it, either!

after doing a little shopping, I am the proud owner of a wet suit!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Got 11 miles in this morning; with that out of the way, now I can start tapering for the Fifth-Third 25K in a few weeks!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Had a 60 mile bike ride yesterday. Was my first ride with a group from the club I joined. Kind of slow with lots of breaks, but I didn't want to hop right in to the "A" group with pacelines and all that. Legs were pretty tired and sore even with all the breaks.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

:D

My favorite running store closed up shop. So now, I have to go even further to find a specialty running store...
