Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Lost about 5lbs due to sheer fear today when a runner crossed the street wearing only black and not in the crosswalk (at 6pm, when it's dark). Friendly reminder to all runners who run at night....REFLECTIVE GEAR AND BRIGHT COLORS ARE IMPORTANT!

thank you 'Ewe for the heads up. It's true. I've almost been hit numerous times running, and that's during the daytime. My rule of other drivers is I always assume they can't see me. Quiz and I are investing in orange running vests just to ensure we are seen.

Important when cycling too, people. I read reports of people getting hit on their bikes and it's heartbreaking. For those of you who are serious into running, check out roadid.com. Quiz and I have both bought one and the peace of mind with it is enormous.

And did a 12 miler today. Let the tapering begin!

You really should use your lights even during the day. I usually don't bother but there's no reason not to.

Yeah, me neither, I read it in an article providing safety tips for cyclists from an NYC bus driver.

Lights don't hurt either- Mrs Alfa is pasted with them- 3 different red lights from behind, 2 white lights in front- some blinking, and a reflective vest.

And she's still very paranoid of drivers who don't pay attention.

This is the absolute truth! Many years ago (still in HS) I watched a kid get killed while riding his bike. He attempted to cross the road on a blind corner. A woman in a minivan came around it and well, you all can imagine what happened. Anyway, it is very important to be safe while running or riding!! I bought a road ID quite a while ago and just this summer decided to upgrade to the Road ID Interactive. IMO it's worth the extra $$.

I read way too many reports of riders/runners getting killed, and I'd hate to have to say "I knew them..." :(

More progress report. I'm happy to report that I ran 12 miles for the first time since September. Not quickly, but it wasn't supposed to be, either.

Interesting side note- it was 6 out and back, and the half way point was a place to get a "sample" for a snack + water. The return was a lot easier than the out, as I think I didn't drink enough water before heading out. Very good to know that I have to make sure I have enough before heading out.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

I think, with 6 weeks to go, I can call this resolution "kept".
And, I'm never going back.

:)
Excellent! Now how about coming down and running either the Fifth-Third 25K or Chicago marathon with me next year? :)

Great to hear! I've learned the same thing. When I ran in Detroit, the cookie and banana I ate beforehand definitely kept me going... didn't have to reach for a gel until mile 6.

And recovery for me is going smoothly. Ran for a half-hour on Sunday, along with using the elliptical and the exercise bike at the gym. There's a fun 5K turkey trot coming up Thanksgiving morning; plan on entering and treating it as a training run.

Also, a friend suggested that I lift more weights as part of maintaining weight. Haven't really lifted for awhile; what's a good way to start?

I was taking my kid to school this morning (he had to go to the workout room for an early session) and as I turned off the ramp from the highway a runner was crossing the street in front of me. He was dressed all in black, it was till quite dark out and he was crossing in the middle of the block near two ramp entrances. Where he was near the snow he contrasted, in the middle of the street he vanished from view.

Marathons are going to wait until 2012--I want to build up more strength first and knock about 10 minutes off my half time.

I'd start with the basic stuff. Body weight squats, push-ups, bicycle crunches, etc. Then we'll start working in curls and what have you.

Did an 8 mile run yesterday, as my last "longer" run before the 1/2 marathon. Ran the whole thing at a 9:50 clip. At 6000 feet of altitude. +-400 feet of elevation changes.

Yeah, bring it on, Vegas.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Outbound: 10 miles, 46 minutes, 4:36/mile
Inbound: 10.73 miles, 57:18, 5:20/mile

FU, wind.

Ah. At least think about coming down for the Fifth-Third; it's a fun race and they offer free booze afterward.

That's what I've been doing; I figured it best to start on the Nautilus-type machines befor doing anything advanced.

And yeah, you'll do great in Vegas. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

You'll do great! Run relaxed, run focused, and think of the meal you're going to consume afterward!

if I knew I was in no danger of not breaking 10:00 per mile, I'd quick duck into a casino on the homestretch and put 20 on red. But I don't want to risk anything

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Yesterday, just for fun, I decided to take a look at my running mileage totals so far for 2010.
January: 18.1
February: 16
March: 4 (Oh goodness...)
April: 37
May: 45.76
June: 26
July: 69.4
August: 70
September: 32.1
October: 35.1
November: 40.68

Yeah, I realize some of those are equivalent to what some people do in a week, but I'm pretty darn proud of those, especially from April onward. I've come a long way in 2010.
Oh, and over the weekend, I officially registered for my next half!! I'm excited, though I'm a bit worried about the idea of training outside in the winter/early spring.
