Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

With the Tigers' loss tonight, combined with Houston's win today, the Tigers have been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention this season.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

They might be 10 out by Memorial Day. All of a sudden this roster needs a serious overhaul this winter. You've got to revamp the entire bullpen, pick up 2 starting pitchers on the FA/trade market (and somehow avoid coming home with another Alfredo Simon), and a left fielder. And you've got about $50-60 mil to get this done.

Yes but... They do have some good pieces. My concerns would be: can victor be good again, or is he done; can Cabrera go the whole year healthy; will some of the young guys continue to improve. Gose, Nick, Romine, VerHagen, and a few others made big steps this year, will that continue?. If so, we should do ok.
Jeff Smardzija is available and might be a good signing, and affordable.
Hammer is right, we don't have the funds to just go buy what we need.
You have to ask yourself why it is we had so many hits but so few runs. It just seemed like we hit into a ton of double plays which really cost us and we failed to get guys home.
I wonder if we will continue with Avila and McCann.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Why not sell Cabrera, Martinez, and Verlander while they have value. Go full rebuild for a year or two. Ausmus has proven he can coach 70 wins.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Because all 3 of them are 10/5 as of the end of the season, Martinez is 37 or 38, Miggy is owed $94 mil guaranteed after age 37 (before options kick in) and that's still 5 years off, and we already have no starting pitching. And leaving out what DD did at the deadline, we don't have much in the farm system.

And I'm not interested in re-creating the 2003 Tigers.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

That was a horse**** piece of fielding by Castellanos.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

This is why we don't deal Verlander. Outside of Daniel Norris, and the occasional night where Sanchez doesn't give up 5 bombs, every night would look like this.

BUXTON!!

1st career bomb.

7-1 Twins, top 8.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Tigers lose 7-1. They finish the season 38-43 at home.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

We can still ruin the playoffs for someone else!

Going to Arlington, if we take 2 of 3 that could bring them back down to a tie with the Astros before playing the Angels. It's possible there will be a 3 way tie for the West, and if the Yanks lose a bunch this week a 5 way for the wild card with the Twins still hanging around.

J.D.!!

2-0, 4 batters in.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Norris gives up a bomb, and Marte loses a pop up not 10 feet into the outfield grass. That was Little League. And I have no idea what on earth Kinsler was doing there, other than eating popcorn and watching.

3-2 Texas. 30 pitches and 0 out so far for Norris. Even if he rights the ship, he's not seeing the 4th inning.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Forget the 4th inning. I'm not exactly certain he's going to get out of the 1st.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

Ausmus and Jeff Jones sit on their nuts instead of going and getting Norris. 50 pitch 1st inning, here we come.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition

54 pitches in the first. No wonder Jeff Jones has been fired three times by this organization. Why wasn't he in Ausmus' ear telling him "GO GET HIM NOW!!" after Odor's triple?

HOLADAY!!

5-3 Texas, top 2.
