Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 8: The Doc Cramer edition

I wonder just how much the kids are involved now.

And apparently this deal got done on Saturday?!?

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 8: The Doc Cramer edition

Castellanos is hitting better, I'll give him that. But he still does not know what to do after that.

Well you could be the red sox who spent big money to sign what they thought was a top 3ed baseman and are regretting it big time. ( Pablo Sandoval)
He can't run, he makes lot's of errors and he's on the dl all the time. He's hitting 260 and he has 50 strikeouts in 339 appearances.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 8: The Doc Cramer edition

And they just put Porcello on the DL today, too. After what they gave him this spring, I don't think I want to hear another word from anybody about what we did with Dontrelle Willis.

The Red Sox made a bunch of mistakes this offseason. Sandoval, Hanley, and Porcello are at the top of the list.

And the bullpen turned a 2-1 lead into a 13-3 loss.

If I remember right, there were some people on here who said we ought to go out and spend to get Sandoval.I think nick is progressing, but I would like to see him field better.
Also I'm hoping that the Tigers go after Cespedes in the off season. He made it known he wants to be here and Avila likes him.
I guess we'll see if the Tigers are going to pull back on the money or if they will keep doing what they have been doing financially.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 8: The Doc Cramer edition

Iggy fouled one off of.....there.

Yeah, we don't need more shots of him holding his balls, or more replays of that.

Okay, let's take a rough cut at this for a moment. In millions:

The payroll was $173 this year. The lux tax kicks in at $191, at a 17.5% rate. We've got $105 already locked into 5 guys, as we've laid out before. We've got some serious holes that we don't have the tools in the farm system to plug in. Therefore...

We need to fix the bullpen. Three arms, including finding a closer. That's $15 there. We're up to $120.

We need another starter. To find a $5 mil starter is a lot like buying a $5,000 used car. I don't think I'd take my chances. Better figure on $15 there. We're now at $135.

JD is arbitration-eligible. That could push $10. $140-145 now, closer to $145.

We need a LF. That might be $10. Now pushing $155.

Iggy, Castellanos, Gose, bench, etc is going to be another $10 or so. Remember, minimum salary now is $500K.

I'd say the floor for next year's payroll should be roughly $165 million. Anything significantly less than that spells immediate doom. If Chris Ilitch is in charge, cue the scary music and, to quote Ron White, put on the **** helmet.

Some jokes at the office today:

Al Avila's first order of business today: unload McCann & Holaday, give son Alex one year contract extension for 30 million.

Who is the Tigers' SP ace and what is his record? Justin Verlander @ 1 win, 4 losses.

Who is the current Tigers closer? Alex Wilson. Who?

What team(s) would buy out either the Verlander or Cabrera contracts if this really is a reboot? But they're franchise players!

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 8: The Doc Cramer edition

RE: Alex Avila. Sure, it's a cheap laugh, but look down at what I posted about what Daddy A said yesterday.

I would think somebody in the NL might bite on JV's contract, as it's only through 2019. Cabrera has big money until 2025, and is owed $94 million, guaranteed, on his age 38-40 years, before options kick in after that.

Alex Wilson has been pretty rock solid this year. Let's see if the arm holds up, or if they wreck that, too.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 8: The Doc Cramer edition

Just saw that Iggy took one where it hurts. Is he still in the game?

And the Sox are leading 2-1 going into the top 9th. Something has got to give in one of these ballparks.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 8: The Doc Cramer edition

I don't want to hear any talk about letting Miggy go. He can DH any night he's in the mood until his social security kicks in, as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 8: The Doc Cramer edition

Twice.

I was there with a b-day party for a 10 year old. I'm sunburnt.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 8: The Doc Cramer edition

Norris has taken a step to the dugout twice on what he thought were called thirds. That's not anybody's idea of how to get a close call, especially when you're a rookie.

Norris is suffering from Kyle Lobstein syndrome. Falling behind on everybody.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 8: The Doc Cramer edition

A 40 pitch first inning. We're going to the bullpen early this evening, I see.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 8: The Doc Cramer edition

Gose looks lost lately. I suspect that this is the reversion to the mean for him.
