Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 8: The Doc Cramer edition
If I remember right, there were some people on here who said we ought to go out and spend to get Sandoval.I think nick is progressing, but I would like to see him field better.
Also I'm hoping that the Tigers go after Cespedes in the off season. He made it known he wants to be here and Avila likes him.
I guess we'll see if the Tigers are going to pull back on the money or if they will keep doing what they have been doing financially.
Okay, let's take a rough cut at this for a moment. In millions:
The payroll was $173 this year. The lux tax kicks in at $191, at a 17.5% rate. We've got $105 already locked into 5 guys, as we've laid out before. We've got some serious holes that we don't have the tools in the farm system to plug in. Therefore...
We need to fix the bullpen. Three arms, including finding a closer. That's $15 there. We're up to $120.
We need another starter. To find a $5 mil starter is a lot like buying a $5,000 used car. I don't think I'd take my chances. Better figure on $15 there. We're now at $135.
JD is arbitration-eligible. That could push $10. $140-145 now, closer to $145.
We need a LF. That might be $10. Now pushing $155.
Iggy, Castellanos, Gose, bench, etc is going to be another $10 or so. Remember, minimum salary now is $500K.
I'd say the floor for next year's payroll should be roughly $165 million. Anything significantly less than that spells immediate doom. If Chris Ilitch is in charge, cue the scary music and, to quote Ron White, put on the **** helmet.
