Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Okay, having had a couple hours to digest this, here we go.

The Rays screwed up. Big time. They sent the best LH starter in the American League away, for a #4 starter and a AAA 2nd baseman. Randy Smith is laughing at that trade.

As for the Tigers, if you really want a good laugh, read Lynn Henning's idiotic column over at Detnews.com. This guy should be fired. He's concerned that we paid too much. We sent an inconsistent hitting/good fielding CF, the #5 starter in our rotation, and an 18 year old SS who is probably no better than #5 on our organizational depth chart, for a guy who won the CY two years ago, and leads the league in IP and strikeouts. Jerry Green could have written a better column from the nursing home.

Ezekiel Carrera will probably be recalled to fill the #4 spot in the outfield. Rajai Davis will likely be shifted to CF, and JD Martinez will take his skillet hands to LF. Here is where we see the major drawback to this trade: our outfield defense is poor at best. Hunter is a liability in RF, and JD is an absolute cluster**** with that piece of leather on his hand.

As an admittedly casual fan, I don't buy Price being the solution to a deep playoff run for this team, but considering they didn't overpay, I'll take the bet.

My initial reaction was that, although a steal on paper, the trade timing is poor. Jackson is a serviceable starter that gave the OF stability. He wasn't clutch in the playoffs at the plate, but could run and catch. (Although I often wondered why he never dove for balls.) I think the Tigers will suffer trying to find the comfort and chemistry he gave them. They may not shake out of this until then end of the season- and could choke their way out of winning the division. I don't care how good Price is, he will still require decent defense behind him. A team weak up the middle will not win championships- and their only middle strength is at pitcher and 2B.

Smyly may go on with a solid career- 10-15 wins a season. Nice kid, but, as I have found out in my later adult years, sports is more a business than anything I remember as a kid. There is no room to place any loyalties or hopes on pro teams, so seeing fan favorites come and go has made me rather pragmatic now. JMO.

Willy Adames. That's the one that might come back to bite us.
Maybe, but I like Inglesias for his glove and Suarez for his bat. Thinking next season and beyond, the position seems solid.

Was it my imagination or was Jackson pulled during the game when the trade became final? That seems beneath the organization. I wonder if he will file that away for later and that will come back to bite us.

He was actually pulled mid at-bat. And he had to be. I believe if he was still in the lineup at 4:01 the trade would have been voided. It was around 3:50 when Davis was sent out there. Plus it allowed Jackson to go out to a standing ovation that he probably wouldn't have gotten if they had just pinch hit for him or subbed after the inning.

That is good to know. I hadn't tuned in last night but I overheard someone talk about the move in general terms without hearing specifics.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Once a trade is made, any player involved is coming out of the game immediately, if not sooner.

I'll say this about Rajai. I don't know about his defense, but he certainly knows how to run the bases.

3-0, bottom 5.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

That's a hell of a time to squeeze a pitcher.

4-2 final.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

I don't think I've seen someone slide quite as far, headfirst, as Rajai just did in quite a while.

Thank God Avila finally drove in a 2-out run. I was looking at the Rockies' on-deck circle to see who was up next.

V-MART!!

8-2, bottom 5.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

I really wish we would use these Tigres jerseys as an alternate throughout the season.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

We don't need alternates. We've already got one of the best home jerseys in all of sports.

Uhhh, Colorado, you're already down 6 runs. You want to bring the infield in NOW?

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Yep. That went about as well as you expected. 9-2 now.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

I have no idea what that pitching coach thinks he's going to tell that pitcher, with Miggy at the plate, other than "put your head between your legs and kiss your *** goodbye".

We do have one of the best home jerseys, but we would also have one of the best alternates.

Also, have they said "on Fiesta Tigres night too!" whenever a Latin player has done something good, or just when Victor and JD hit homers?
