Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition
Iglesias got hit flush on the top of the hand. Trust me, as a former high school ball player (and some Adray League ball in Dearborn against some bonafide MLB prospects- including Barry Larkin and Chris Sabo while at the U-M) getting hit there is no picnic. It takes weeks to regain the grip, which is the main problem right now. I heard he is fielding ground balls gently. I expect him back in two weeks for the ALDS.
Peralta's last day of suspension is today. He'll be in the lineup in Miami, especially since the Tigers are struggling offensively right now. It won't matter if they have clinched or not- Tuey is playing himself off the playoff roster and maybe even off of next season's roster. I think Leyland has no choice but to add Peralta to the roster.
Mad Max is going tonight, so that would be a perfect opportunity to close out the division. If not, Miami has won 55 games this season although they are not accidently on purpose tanking like Houston is. If we pull another 2006 and back into the playoffs as a wild card, it won't exactly be a grand endorsement for what Leyland has accomplished in Detroit- even with two pennants (both times beating the Yanks along the way) and two WS flops. The collapse of a 7 game lead that led to losing a game 163 to Twins still burns in my mind.
According to Dickerson and Price, the Tigers pitching staff only needs 22 more strikeouts to establish a new season strikeout record for MLB. The Cubs hold the record from 2004 IIRC.
Apparently, Iglesias might be back for the postseason. But, I suppose there's no guarantee of that--he's still struggling with the range of motion in his hand. I know that contusions, bone bruises, or stress fractures (whatever you want to call them) can be pretty difficult to recover from.
So, when is Jhonny's first game back?
And, when are we going to win this division? ! ? ! ? !![]()
