Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Apparently, Iglesias might be back for the postseason. But, I suppose there's no guarantee of that--he's still struggling with the range of motion in his hand. I know that contusions, bone bruises, or stress fractures (whatever you want to call them) can be pretty difficult to recover from.

So, when is Jhonny's first game back?

And, when are we going to win this division? ! ? ! ? !

Iglesias got hit flush on the top of the hand. Trust me, as a former high school ball player (and some Adray League ball in Dearborn against some bonafide MLB prospects- including Barry Larkin and Chris Sabo while at the U-M) getting hit there is no picnic. It takes weeks to regain the grip, which is the main problem right now. I heard he is fielding ground balls gently. I expect him back in two weeks for the ALDS.

Peralta's last day of suspension is today. He'll be in the lineup in Miami, especially since the Tigers are struggling offensively right now. It won't matter if they have clinched or not- Tuey is playing himself off the playoff roster and maybe even off of next season's roster. I think Leyland has no choice but to add Peralta to the roster.

Mad Max is going tonight, so that would be a perfect opportunity to close out the division. If not, Miami has won 55 games this season although they are not accidently on purpose tanking like Houston is. If we pull another 2006 and back into the playoffs as a wild card, it won't exactly be a grand endorsement for what Leyland has accomplished in Detroit- even with two pennants (both times beating the Yanks along the way) and two WS flops. The collapse of a 7 game lead that led to losing a game 163 to Twins still burns in my mind.

According to Dickerson and Price, the Tigers pitching staff only needs 22 more strikeouts to establish a new season strikeout record for MLB. The Cubs hold the record from 2004 IIRC.

Any idea why the season ending inter-league play? Tigers v Marlins? And, I notice the BoSox are playing the Rockies. Seems kind of anti-climatic. At least the BoSox are closing the season against the O's. Shouldn't you be closing out the season within your own division, or at least your own league?

You'll have to ask Selig that one.

Leyland thinks it is a poor idea to play the last series in a NL park and I agree. But, at this stage in the game, would you rather play Miami or play KC to end the season? I like our chances in Miami.

With an uneven number of teams in each league, there must be an interleague series going on all the time. You can't have every team finishing the season with a series in their own division or even league.

Thanks a lot Houston!

Actually, it was a condition of the franchise sale in Houston. Want us to approve the sale? A move to the AL would really, really help us make that happen....

The new owner had a choice. He could move to the AL, or he wasn't going to be the new owner.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

I'd like to hear George Kell utter anything, but those days are gone. :(

I've got Game 5 of the 1968 Series on DVD. That will have to suffice.

I *wish* there was a montage of key moments during the 1984 season that WDIV/Tigers would release- either with Ernie/Paul (audio) or George/Al (video). I mean, I know they have the Gibson HR clip (game 5 WS), you would think they could market the whole season highlights. I have an old LP titled "The year of the Tiger, 1968" which is narrated by Ray Lane and has clips of key games with Lane & Ernie in the regular season that year. I treasure that. It even has a clip from a game that Price won with a late inning homer that season, believe it or not.

Which is why one of those franchises (Miami, Houston, Tampa-based on attendance) should be euthanized OR another one should be added. Maybe Gary Bettman has some ideas on that.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Expansion is the likely answer. We sure aren't contracting. Remember how the Twins/Expos fiasco turned out.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

You don't see that everyday. That ball hit the corner of the bag.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Max over 100 pitches, bottom of the 6th, still only Tigers 1 : 0 Twins.

I don't know if I want to watch the rest of this.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Might as well. Harrelson's Heroes are getting bombed tonight, so they're about as useless as tits on a fish.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Sure, Max went 123 pitches tonight. That's probably more than we wanted, but he doesn't have to pitch until next Friday at the earliest.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

We win the division outright with a win or a Cleeeeeeeeeeeeveland loss, correct?

Cleeeeveland won big tonight, so it's up to us.

BTW, the eeeeee is pronounced in the most annoying high-pitch you can come up with. Kinda like a 14 year old girl who just saw Justin Timberlake's buttcheek.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Sure, but at some point we're going to have to quit trotting out Drew Smyly. We got away with that one.
