Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Right now I'd take Aurelio Lopez over Valverde.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

So, Leyland said in the post-game that it was a no brainer to bring Valverde in for the 9th. But is it a no brainer to leave him in when he gives up a homer and two singles to start the inning? Why would you not have someone going in the pen and yank Valverde after that kind of a start in the 9th when he's trying to close out the game?

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Because he's the CLOSER!!!?!?!>!>!<<M!<!>!

And he did his job. He closed the game out, all right.

(you can guess what kind of face I'm making right now)

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Shannon Hogan, I love your rack, and I would love to do nasty things to you, but please do not sit there and tell me to "give Valverde credit" about ANYTHING after this god**** debacle.

You're going to try breaking Valverde's knee with your shovel ain't you? Do you need any more help with this?? ;)

Right, I understand he's the CLOSER. Now I'm just a fan, not a real great student of the game; but, I'm still wondering: Why would you not have someone going in the bullpen so you could yank Valverde after his terrible start in the 9th inning? I think Mario (FSD) said there was no one going in the bullpen when Valverde got in trouble. I was curious if this is common practice for MLB teams to not have anyone throwing once the "CLOSER" has hit the field? I think if any other reliever had been out there and given up a home run and two singles straight off, like Valverde did, they would have gotten the hook. Of course, you never know.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Most teams, when their closer is in the game, put the bullpen away for the duration.

Because the closer closes the game. No one else can, because he's the closer. Can't have anyone else closing games, or even up in the bullpen, because it might the closer's widdle feewings. (I'm sure at this point you can feel the sarcasm dripping off of my laptop)

That and the fact that Valverde can get himself into trouble like this in about 3.1 pitches, and by the time we get someone else up and ready, half-blonde-beard-boy would have already given up about 7 runs and it would have been too late anyway.

Can we fish Ugie Urbina out of prison? I don't want him to close. I want him to go visit Valverde with his flaming machetes that got him thrown in a Venezuelan clink in the first place.

According to Wikipedia, from an article in the NYDailyNews, Urbina was released in Dec. 2012. So, he is available and might need the work, whether throwing "flaming machetes," "baseballs," or as bigmrg74 suggested, "breaking Valverde's knee."

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Or brawling with half the Tigers on the team plane, causing him to get shipped to Philly.

Scratch that. I don't want Polanco back at this stage in his career.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Tuiasosopo hit with the next pitch, and the pitcher is gone. Showalter might go next.

FSD is showing airplanes or something, because nobody saw it.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Verlander is fixing to dot somebody. You can see it in his eyes.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Ummm. the guy most mentioned when they where shopping Porcello for a closer was Huston Street. He's blown two in a row, big time and he's on the DL quite a bit too. Mo blew one against the mets last week. Have you looked at Rodney's numbers this year?. He's blown at least two and he's nothing like last year.. You have to expect Valverde's going to blow a few.

I think he's the best player available truthfully. His stuff is not as good as it needs to be for sure, but given what's out there, there is nothing better. Detroit fans would have called for Mo's head I'm positive of it.
Valverde's numbers this year are not that bad, even after yesterday.Rondon needs at least a year to get ready, and he may never be ready.
Maybe we should have kept Jason Grilli.
