Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 4: The Rudy York edition

to all you guys that wanted to dump Miguel because he would "cost us 15-20 games" after his DUI, suck it. To all you guys that wanted to dump Laird after... after... wait, that was me. :o

For this alone I am happy the Tiggers won The Central.
Congrats and good luck in the playoffs.....enhanced coverage makes it fun to watch a certain someone try to sneak a Pall Mall in the dugout.

That last part was me, too. *passes geezer a beer*

And I'll be damned if he didn't just sneak in a puff before the clubhouse interview. :D

It always amazes me how emotional Leyland gets after a playoff berth. Complete opposite of how he acts during the season.

YES!
Love that guy, he's a great story. I wasn't surprised when he was hired to manage the Tigers, I was surprised he was still alive!
Seriously thought he was in his 70s when he managed the Marlins.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 4: The Rudy York edition

It still might be impossible. I've got to think he needs at least 1 more homer, maybe 2.
Good news is that Hamilton is playing in Oakland. Not the easiest place to hit a ball out. Plus Miggy hits very well in KC. Sitting him is not necessarily the answer because then he could fall behind in home runs. A tie in HR counts as a triple crown win. Carl Yastrzemski was the last guy to do it and he tied with Harmon Killebrew in home runs.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 4: The Rudy York edition

Congrats on making the playoffs! Given that my team **** the bed this year, I was looking for a team to adopt for the playoffs. And since I would really like to see the Tigers advance, I think I will jump on the Nationals' bandwagon. As I do not want my Opposite Girl powers to affect the Tigers in anyway.

Woo hoo!! Go Nats!!

Except that I am rooting for the Tigers. In secret. Shhh. Don't tell anyone.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 4: The Rudy York edition

I still can't believe there's a discussion between Cabrera and Trout for MVP. Cabrera looks to be on track to pull off a feat that hasn't been done in 45 years, while pushing his team into the playoffs, yet the media will vote for Trout because "He had a month less to do it" and "He scored more runs."

Last I checked, the Angels won't be in the playoffs. How can you be valuable if you can't help your team make the playoffs? Sure, you can make them better, but in the end no one cares if you finished two games out or thirty once October hits.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 4: The Rudy York edition

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Cabrera may win the batting race, the RBI race, and the HR race, but he's never going to have the race that gets you extra votes from the writers.

Becuase he's got a high WAR!

Just ignore that the team WAR's when you add these players together literally make no sense compared to reality and no one really knows what a "replacement player" is. Just assume that the nerds that have been pushing these "advanced" stats since the 70's know what they're doing.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 4: The Rudy York edition

I would be annoyed if the half-season wonderboy was handed the MVP for looking stupid while Miguel Cabrera, after a season equaled through all of history only by Gehrig and Ruth, was snubbed. That would be the ultimate slap in the face to this hall of famer, his team, city, state, and division. And Ruth, and Gehrig. Bottom line, it would be inexcusable.

This!

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 4: The Rudy York edition

Cabrera is more than 40 total bases ahead of the next closest guy, but that stat is ignored my the sabremetrics guys too.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 4: The Rudy York edition

7 point lead in the batting race. 1 homer ahead of Hamilton, 2 ahead of Encarnacion. Hamilton goes this afternoon, Encarnacion an hour before our game starts.

Quick look at the numbers. If Cabrera went 0-4, and Trout went 4-4, Trout would lead by decimal points.

Trout (4-4) - .3285714
Cabrera (0-4) - .3285256

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 4: The Rudy York edition

Unless the HR race gets dicey, I'd say Cabby doesn't get 4 at bats.

Jose Reyes thinks Cabrera should bunt for a hit and then take himself out of the game, then throw himself a party to watch Mike Trout not win the batting title.

Cabrera could sit out and no one could say anything about it. He has 620 AB. Trout is only at 556.
