Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

And now tonight the Indians are stealing home on a RIGHT HANDED PITCHER, while he's on the mound with the ball.

5-4 final.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Zimmerman makes his first start since April. This oughta be good...

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Nick Ramirez, who has pitched admirably this year before tonight, comes in and absolutely ****s the bed in the 5th and 6th innings. We've blown a 7-1 lead and we're down 8-7.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

2-19 in our last 21 home games. That's literally 1/4 of our home schedule for the year.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Don't look now, but Candelario has 4 bombs in the last week since coming back from Toledo.

I'll do midseason grades after tomorrow's game. They will not be kind.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

27-58 at the break. Percentage points behind KC, in last place. On pace for a 53-109 season. Woof. I didn't think it was going to be this bad.

12-32 at home.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

I'll comment later, but this is what I have for the midseason offense grades:

M Cabrera: D
J Harrison: F
J Mercer: F
J Candelario: D
N Goodrum: C
R Rodriguez: D+
B Dixon: A
N Castellanos: B
J Jones: C
C Stewart: D
G Greiner: F
J Hicks: F
G Beckham: D+
H Castro: C
Everyone else: Incomplete

Overall: F. Worst offense in the AL by a longshot.

Pitching:

M Boyd: A-
S Turnbull: C-
J Zimmerman: F
R Carpenter: F
D Norris: C
N Ramirez: D
V Alcantara: D-
B Hardy: C-
B Farmer: D
T Ross: F
J Jimenez: F
S Greene: A-
D Stumpf: D-
Everyone else either gets a F or an incomplete

Overall: D. Everytime Gardenhire calls down to the bullpen, he might as well be ordering pizza instead.

Management:
Gardenhire: C. For the most part, this is not his fault.
McClendon: F. He has to wear the majority of the lack of offense anywhere on this roster.
Anderson: D.

Avila/Ilitch: If this is a season-only grade, this is an obvious F. I have no earthly idea if this rebuild is going to work. That's the sole reason I'm not completely failing them here.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Finally last place!

This team has to go 16-59 the rest of the way to not tie the 2003 team. That's a sliver above a .200 winning percentage the rest of the way, but I'm still not all that confident they can do it. If we make any deadline moves it will get rid of the last of the talent we have. Of course, we're not using Greene for anything meaningful (last save opportunity was July 3rd, last save was June 29, hasn't even pitched the last five games), so it's not like we'll miss anything by sending him away.

I say go for the loss record. That way they can join the 2008 Lions in sports infamy.

It should be mentioned the Orioles also have a shot. Same amount of wins (28) as Detroit, but they've played five more games. 15-55 the rest of the way will tie 2003 DET for them, and they have a tougher division.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

The pitching hasn't been the greatest, but the Tigers' biggest issue is the offense. They're dead last in MLB in runs scored, by a mile, outside of the Marlins. They're 29th in MLB in homers, only ahead of the Marlins. In a year where the Twins might hit 300 homers, the Tigers might not get to 150. It's not 1985 anymore. You've got to be able to hit the ball out of the park in today's game.

There isn't one position you can point to where you can say that they're above average. They've gotten absolutely nothing out of 2B and behind the plate. Harrison was an absolute bust, and Greiner's whopping .162 average and .510 OPS are absolutely absurd.

And as I talk about pitching not being the problem, Zimmerman puts us in a 3-1 hole 5 batters into the game.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

6-3 Tigers in the 3rd, and we've knocked out their starter. Problem is, Zim is on the mound and we've still got 21 outs to get.
