Derek's DIII 20 Predictions

Re: Derek's DIII 20 Predictions

Adrian is horribly inconsistent. I'd say the Friday game was much more representative of how the team could be then the Saturday game. Their coaching has them downright confuddled. If you have paid any attention to Adrian over the last 2-3 years, the team that plays on Friday is rarely the same team that plays on Saturday.

I would agree that friday was more repreentative of the team, on saturday 5 goals were against one line 5 on 5 and one more against the same line on the PK. reality is they finished the weekend a little better then the average for the year against RIT. Going into the game RIT had an average marin of victory of 5.47 goals and Adrian lost by an average of 5. I think that RIT is probably considered the number one team right now by most and by some as far out in front of everyone. I don't think that the win at Adrian proves anything except how good a team RIT is right now.

2. Elmira’s Tori Charron will lead the country in goals.

With 6 goals tonight...i'd say this is looking more likely to happen...

Re: Derek's DIII 20 Predictions

1. RIT or Wis. River Falls will finish the regular season undefeated. Looking okay. Both are still undefeated at the moment.

2. Elmira’s Tori Charron will lead the country in goals. This past weekend certainly made this one more promising.

3. Norwich’s Sophie Leclerc will lead the country in total points and win the Laura Hurd Award. First part is still looking good. Second one is a crapshoot but she'd have to be considered one of the favorites.

4. Norwich beats Plattsburgh on Jan. 12. at the Stafford. (This actually is a bold statement. Trust me.)

5. Finlandia gets its first win of the season before Marian. We'll find out this weekend

6. Adrian’s Emily Michelin breaks Wis. Stevens Point’s Amy Statz’s record for shutouts in a single season. Michelin has 6, the record is 13. Very unlikely. I was a bit overzealous with this prediction and probably should have only made the bar 10.

7. Amherst doesn’t lose again until the NCAA Tournament.

8. Concordia-Moorhead’s Abby Taffe leads the country in freshman scoring. Not looking good with Kunichika, Tanzer, and Charron all having more points.

9. Bowdoin makes the NESCAC finals. We'll see...Polar Bears have shown signs of improvement but maybe this prediction should have waited another year.

10. Elmira and Middlebury do not make the NCAA Tournament. Middlebury is starting to put together some impressive results with wins over Trinity and Amherst. Elmira always plays its best hockey in the ECAC W tournament so this could be wrong.

11. RIT’s Scott McDonald wins Coach of the Year. As good of a shot as anyone.

12. St. Norbert makes the NCHA Final Four. They are proving to be a tough beat right now. Not a team I want to face in playoff situation.

13. St. Mary’s makes the MIAC championship game. Getting humbled a bit in the second half of the season. MIAC is a dog fight between GAC, St. Kate's, and UST right now with St. Mary's on the outside looking in.

14. Manhattanville doesn’t make the ECAC East championship game. Well right now its not looking like it will be on the Valiant's home ice, which could be a good thing given their track record. Honestly, their two losses this past weekend make me think this team is going to hit its stride in March for the first time since making the 2008 NC game in Platty.

15. Oswego wins an ECAC West playoff game. Showing signs of that breakout season the players talked about on the Hockumetary. This could happen, especially with Emi Williams in net. Speaking of the Hockumentary....What has happened to it in the second half of the season? It seems we've stalled out after episode six. I'm hoping they pick it back up.

16. Plattsburgh wins the ECAC West. Good of a shot as anyone of the power three in the ECAC West.

17. One of the conference tournament championships goes to double overtime. This is just a stab in the dark. Who knows.

18. RIT hosts the Frozen Four. Looking good at the moment. Tough tests with Elmira still left.

19. RIT, Plattsburgh, Norwich, and River Falls make the Frozen Four. These would have to be considered your favorites along with Amherst, Elmira and Middlebury I would think to get there.

20. RIT wins the national championship. If it's at the Ritter, would we get another sold out crowd with the men's hockey team likely playing in the Blue Cross Arena in the Atlantic Hockey Chammpionships?

No doubt. I know a lot of people would go to Women's games if it came down to it.

I'm pretty sure Big Goon said he would be there, and a bunch of other people I talked to said they would as well. I don't remember talking to anyone who said they wouldn't.

For what it's worth, Utica has one more appearance in an ECAC-West championship game than RIT. I'd say RIT should worry about even getting to the championship game before making the NCAA final four or winning a national chip because historically, if you don't make the ECACW chip game, you have no shot at NCAAs (see RIT 08-09 going 21-2-2 and losing in ECACW semis to Plattsburgh).
I know I am coming to this a bit late....but this final statement is not true. In 2006, Utica defeated Elmira 4-1 in the ECAC-W semi's then lost to Plattsburgh 4-0 in the finals. The 2nd ECAC-W team in the NCAA's?......you guessed it, Elmira. For the record, those two teams met in the first round of the tourney, Plattsburgh won 4-1. ooh....ooh....let me guess! The two ECAC-W teams that made the tourney in 09 were Plattsburgh and Elmira, right? Want to change your hypothesis nyi19?

Unless both games end in a tie...

The last time I read the D3 women's championship manual, the dates and times for the championship weekend were always left to be very flexible just for these types of scenarios.

I've got to think if RIT hosts the final weekend of play and the men make it to Blue Cross, they will adjust the women's times to avoid as much of a conflict with the AHA tournament.

You can essentially make this one green now, unless RF has a let down of epic proportions against Finlandia and Marian. I know thats not out of the realm of possibility when you go into a situation knowing that you should win, but I can't see them losing here.

RIT's last regular season game is against Elmira....could happen but unlikely.

The 20 predictions will certainly be back come early January 2012. I enjoy doing those as well. Definitely one of my favorite blog posts of the year.

For now here's this week edition of This Week in D-III women's hockey wich focuses on the start of the NESCAC season and the traditional power two of Amherst and Middlebury.
