Re: Democratic Challengers 8: Candidates Can Only Work for A Vegan Farm Market

Iowa does suck.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">This is truly the worst system that anyone could have devised. That a multiracial and multiethnic party assigns so much weight to a 90% white electorate in a process that logistically disenfranchises so many people is really shameful. <a href="https://t.co/b0JAcnHx8j">https://t.co/b0JAcnHx8j</a></p>— Joshua Zeitz (@JoshuaMZeitz) <a href="https://twitter.com/JoshuaMZeitz/status/1224334943888822272?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 3, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Having the gatekeeping states be lily white is not a coincidence. Illinois should go first. It's still in the Midwest so the flyovers won't get their tender feewies hurt.

This reflects what I said about caucuses being more restrictive of voting rights than any voter ID law. Sanders does really well among fired up, activist, “savvy” voters, as evidenced by the number of donors he has, and how well he does in caucus states amongst people who have hours of their time on a random weeknight to “vote.” I think I remember Sanders dominated the Washington caucus in 2016, and then was destroyed by Clinton in the (non-binding) primaries later on, because more people voted. I love the man. I voted for him once. That said, I’m definitely nervous to see what a constant campaign against “socialism” does to his numbers if he were to win the nomination. Just a constant daily barrage of “socialism is bad” that none of the educated voters would fall for, but that the everyday American voter, who likely still isn’t paying much attention yet, falls for on a daily basis. Either way, I love that we finally made it to primary season.

The problem is that at any given point in time you're never really sure whether Illinois will still be operating.

They literally did this against Obama twice.

Then it's a perfect stand-in for Dump's America.

I've been following politics closely since 1980. The GOP has run OH NOES TEH COMMUNISM!!!11! scare campaigns against every Democratic nominee since then.

It does not matter if we run Karl Marx or Milton Friedman, the Republicans are going to scream we're commies either way. So run the actual socialist; we literally have nothing to lose.

I don't know if you watch The Circus on Showtime, but on last night's episode they made HRC's campaign communications director, Jennifer Palmieri I think, go with the hosts to Trump's rally in Des Moines last week. The part of Trump's speech they showed was all about his socialism argument.

Palmieri walked out of the event, and she had this sort of shocked look on her face. The hosts asked her what she thought and she responded by saying "he makes a compelling case for re-election." That can't be good if that's her reaction.

Requested my ballot today. I have concluded there are only two candidates with a good shot at beating Dump, and my dislike of both of them is pretty well-documented here.

I assume that's Biden and Bloomberg? I'm not sure who else one would get grumpy about.

I think any of our people can win. Or lose. Screw tactical voting in the primary -- vote your heart. Plenty of time to vote tactically in the general.

BTW do we have any Iowans here?

Actually, Biden and St. Bernard of Burlington

IIRC, unofan was raised there and now lives across the river. He's the closest we have to a real, live one.

Color me shocked that a Hillary Clinton operative doesn't understand how the word socialism has been twisted to fit the needs of the "you have everything to fear about liberals" party.

Re: Democratic Challengers 8: Candidates Can Only Work for A Vegan Farm Market

My thinking on this is that there are only 3 candidates left who have substantial public attention: Liz, Joe, Bernie

Liz is too professorial, and I don't mean that in a "she's Hillary 2.0!!!" Bernout way. Hillary couldn't be an engaging professor if she tried, everyone would stop attending class after syllabus day and pass or fail on their own merits. My MTU sociology professor kept everyone attending just by being an edgy/annoying/"what outlandish nonsense will he say next?" type. Liz is an explainer, and Joe Six-Pack doesn't like explainers; he likes edgy/annoying/"say whatever I want to trigger the X" types. That's why Liz belongs in the Senate as our future Senate Majority Leader - you are also voting for the Dems down ballot, right Berners?

So that leaves Biden and Bernie. We all know Bernie's MO, and his ability to fire up the generation born from about 1990 onward, but what has gone virtually unspoken is his ability to fire up rural former Obama voters in crucial states like MI, WI, and PA. That's why I think he has a good shot at this if his campaign plays its cards right.

Biden is, for me, even more of a wildcard. As the default candidate of the moderates, he has the history and "return to normalcy" vibe to easily pull in blue collar types who mainly vote with their wallets in places like PA/OH/MI/WI. Places where Trump has done little-to-nothing to benefit the local yokels in spite of his rhetoric.

Other way around. Grew up in Omaha, lived here since my 3rd year of law school.

Mea culpa.
