Declaring Our Independence: UAH 2010-11, Part the First

Re: Declaring Our Independence: UAH 2010-11, Part the First

ouch....

rink question - how cold is it in the VBC? I know it's an "ice" rink, but temperatures vary greatly fro rink to rink...is it fleece cold or parka cold?

That depends on you.

If you're a southerner, born and bred, or unusually thin-skinned it's cool enough for a light coat. If you're an acclimated yankee or southern military brat, you'll want a fleece, but it'll spend a lot of time over your knees or the back of your chair. IF you're a big fat yankee (like me) who doesn't like anything over 65 degrees, then you'll want a t-shirt. If you bring a parka we're gonna laugh at you.

In all fairness my wife does fine in a UAH jersey or light fleece over a t-shirt and she's a local. I tend to wear my gray fleece but that's because I like having pockets for my cell phone and car keys, and I often take it off for getting too warm. It is NOT a cold arena, of course in my opinion neither is the arena up in Fort Wayne, but that's the Michigander in me.

Re: Declaring Our Independence: UAH 2010-11, Part the First

Yes, we got ours too!
Thank goodness that we weren't traveling on the given seat-selection day, that we knew how to work a "group" airline boarding line (never first in your group, that's uncool, but always second), and that the push-pins got handled correctly. :D

Regarding Penn State, that's a positive in my opinion. Major change is the only way that I see UAH ever finding a conference home. A Big Ten/Twelve/Six/Seven/Eight :) Hockey Conference could create that change. As Jerry Clower would quote John Eubanks up in the tree, "Just shoot up here amongst us, one of us has got to have some relief!"

Well, I had my say about the 'system' in the previous thread so I won't bother rehashing it. I'm just glad they're here.

I think we need more 'fresh blood' in the D-I system, I just dislike the creation of a have/have-not system because with the amount of talent out there it really isn't. It's a societal construct of opinion. I'd like to keep the "football" based athletic conferences out of it though since that's a major part of the have/have-not problem.

Re: Declaring Our Independence: UAH 2010-11, Part the First

I think it's rediculous that the ccha didn't at least give UAH a 1 year membership to buy them some time and give them a home. Assnastos is a jerk. Best wishes this year. I hope you guys find a home.

Re: Declaring Our Independence: UAH 2010-11, Part the First

opening weekend, New Years, nashville for sure...most the trips up this way...others depend on work schedule...

Looking forward to seeing you down here.

Though this brings to mind the question of when we're going to get the details on the tickets for the Nashville games. Those weren't included in our season ticket package from what I saw. I just hope the Preds don't try to suck the fun out of it by pricing the tickets through the roof because it's the Blackhawks. I know that has kept us away from some Predator / Red Wing games in the past.

Two weeks and a bit 'til puck drop on 10-11 season. Any reports on how the team is looking in practice?

hey gfmorris, saw the note on Facebook. Hope all is well.

I've got no clue what's up with gfmorris, but I'd like a clue... as would some others since it's been mentioned around a bit that folks are concerned as he's a big part of the UAH Hockey community.

Re: Declaring Our Independence: UAH 2010-11, Part the First

There's at least two folks up in NH praying for Geof, as we have closely followed the UAH team since the news last year.

Re: Declaring Our Independence: UAH 2010-11, Part the First

This Beaver hockey fan has Geof in his thoughts and prayers! ;)

I may hate Huntsville (the team), but their fans are top notch and great to hang out with!

Hang in there Geof!

Re: Declaring Our Independence: UAH 2010-11, Part the First

I'd really rather we celebrate the first expansion in a while. I'm just upset at the practicalities of the whole thing. I'm just as upset that we lost Wayne State, and many other programs to get to this point, and now we're discussing losing more because money matters more than the programs do.

What's really frustrating to me is the thought that even if we still had some of the teams that we've lost in the last couple of decades*, that wouldn't change the fact that some of these schools have the potential to drop their programs. Having more Wayne States around isn't going to help keep WMU or BGSU afloat any more than the existing CCHA programs.

That's why its so awesome that Penn State is coming on board. As much as people hate the idea of a BTHC, the fact is that college hockey needs more big money types of schools to help generate more overall revenue. We just have to hope that some of that extra revenue goes towards programs like UAH, LSSU, SCSU, etc. instead of just going straight to the back pockets of BCS schools.

*Just looking at the WCHA/CCHA footprint: Wayne St., Findlay, Kent State, UIC, St. Louis, Penn and Villanova have dropped since the late 70s.

Re: Declaring Our Independence: UAH 2010-11, Part the First

Got to love all the supporters of the schools who are entering the BTHC are telling everyone how this is good for hockey in general. If I was in their shoes, I might believe that too.

Weather in Colorado yesturday finally got cool enough to wear my UAH jersey. Same with today. When I can wear the jerseys I know that it is finally hockey season.

Got my UAH season tickets in the mail today (remember, I am in Colorado), saw them on the way home from picking up my DU tickets. A doubly good day. :D

Of course being in Colorado, and my one person who I shared the tickets with moving to Denver, I got October's and November's games available. Free, just PM me and I will get someone's address to mail them out.

Sec 217, row C, aisle seats 10-13

I'm back, all. :) Not a good few days, and I have a lot of hard days ahead of me, but I'm hoping to be celebrating a Charger win exactly 14 days from right now.

[For anyone wondering, Coach Cole's 256 cell number is still valid. He called while I was in the hospital.]

I hope this isn't in response to my post. Read it again. Penn State getting a team is good for college hockey.

The BTHC possibily killing a handful of programs is not.

BUT, at the same time, we need to appreciate the fact that a big money school like Penn State brings more to the table than WSU, Findlay and UIC put together. If we ever see a noticeable growth in the profile of college hockey, it will come from the Penn States of the world, not the Wayne States.

U.S. International & Northern Arizona had programs in the 80s too.
Yes, but it'd be a stretch to say that they were in the WCHA/CCHA footprint.
