First off, many of that type are going to live in a city, probably an apartment or a condo/house governed by a HOA. And on the off chance they're rural, do you think they're even going to be OK with hunting?

I'm in a suburb, but I live a mile or two from a reserve base. We hear gunshots all the time, and in a pattern that signifies target practice, sometimes early in the morning. My castle hasn't been affected physically, so carry on.

A large majority of people that want gun control are not against hunting. There are some that are, but I get the impression that the number of people in that group is quite small.

So, I've been to the one in LV (Battlefield Las Vegas) about 2 years ago. Phenomenal place, really. Just about any weapon you could want to shoot, they had it. But it's ran by all former military, and as bbdl alluded to, things are extremely tightly controlled. I never felt unsafe, regardless of who was around me. The range officers were literally an arms reach away at all times.

Got to shoot an AK-47, Uzi, Barrett .50 sniper, and essentially the M4. They had probably >100 different weapons.

For several years, the gunman lived with his girlfriend, Marilou Danley, in a retirement community in Reno, Nev., neighbors said. They said they interacted with Danley but not with Paddock, whom they described as extremely standoffish. Danley told residents there that Paddock was a professional gambler, explaining their long absences from the neighborhood.

She only saw him in the mornings, when he went to the clubhouse to work out. Occasionally, he would open the garage door, revealing a large safe the size of a refrigerator. Other than that, the couple kept their blinds closed.

I'm always amazed at the professionalism and safety consciousness of the ex-mil guys who are into guns.

They aren't the problem. The problem are the weekend warrior eejits.

Also, if we're talking things/people that are the problem. People that own guns and don't have them secured, behind a lock and key, are a huge problem IMO. I own several guns, mostly for trap/skeet and hunting. Every one (besides a couple that are no longer functional and are hanging on the wall as decorations) is locked in a safe, where no one but me, and my wife, is able to get to them. I don't think that this is an issue with this tragedy, but it is with almost every story you hear about a 4 year old shooting him/herself.

In my experience well-trained gun nuts are hyper conscious of safety issues. The issue is Jefferson Beauregard Dampnuts, who would have flunked the corps psych test but needs an arsenal as a crutch to prop up his limp self-esteem.

I haven't seen any numbers on this question, but one of things I was wondering when I saw the video clips was whether any deaths or injuries were caused by the chaos that ensued when the shooting started, or were they all gunshot deaths and injuries. I have to believe there was a horrific stampede to get out of what is a fenced in area.

It's neither. It's flypaper to catch suckers who are then separated from their money. Alex Jones isn't crazy. He isn't an ideologue. He's a con man and he knows how to suck Flag's wallet dry. He's a televangelist and his faith is wingnuttery rather than Jeebus. But televangelists don't believe in god, they just use it.

I would assume so. That might be the big difference between the initial number (200) and the later one (500). The first were shot, the second were trampled.

yeah, I have no problem with hunting or owning weapons used for hunting (provided you aren't mentally ill or have been convicted of a violent crime)
I do think there should be more restrictions on hand guns and I think "military-style" guns and high capacity magazines should be banned.

This all seems reasonable to me. As a rule I'd just prefer the locality to decide. Cities should ban all weapons. BFE Montana you can have heavy artillery if you want -- what's there to damage?

I know I've posted it on here, but I have a friend that took a gun safety class and bought a handgun for home defense (why, I don't really know -- half my neighbors don't bother locking their doors) -- the "instructor" (and the person he purchased the gun from) was someone that my friends husband met at work. He didn't believe in using the safety on a gun, because it could take too long to turn off. He also wouldn't walk to the mailbox at the end of his driveway without a loaded gun, and had loaded guns stashed all over his house (with the safety off, I'm sure). His wife also carried a loaded gun in her purse (safety off!!). This nut-job is out there teaching other people about "gun safety" (my friend and his husband are smart enough to know this guy is a nut-job).

One of the things that I thought of when you mentioned hand guns is that there are a few different categories of gun violence that continually get brought up (because they are problems).

First, we have mass shootings, where one or more people try to shoot as many innocent people as quickly as possible.
Second, accidental shootings, usually involving kids or some form of idiocy.
Third, gang/cartel violence.

All three require different solutions, and different strategies, IMO.

And then just expand "mentally ill" so that practically no one can have one. Forget it.
