Dartmouth Mens Hockey

UNH and Dartmouth have never been D3. The ECAC instituted divisions before the NCAA and Dartmouth was always D1, along with the rest of the Ivies. UNH decided to go with D2, but after 2 seasons moved up to D1, still before the NCAA had divisions, where they have remained.

Thanks. Yes, I should have written “drop down” instead of “drop back,” at least if we agree that Div 3 is a step down from Div 1. But, we would need to add a “play down rule,” like the old “play up rule.”

Agreed, but I don't see it happening as the rules went the other way to stop it. The other option is to drop the entire athletic department down to D3 like Hartford.

Dartmouth has three Div 1 National Championships in skiing: 1958 (Lyme, NH), 1976 (Sunday River, Maine; shared), and 2007 (Wildcat ski area, NH).

... and here I was, belittling Dartmouth Men's Hockey in particular, and Dartmouth Athletics in general.

Looks like the rest of the place is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in pseudoscience, as evidenced by one of today's front page stories in the Union Leader of all places ...

Dartmouth study: Climate change leading to more MLB home runs | Weather | unionleader.com

Not pseudoscience, as Bulletin of American Meteorological Society (BAMS) is a top-tier science journal. As a climate scientist, I have been a member of AMS for a long time, but am still miffed that BAMS rejected one my own papers about a decade ago. :-)

edit: But, of course, the most important thing is keeping this thread alive.

And we're just the folks to do it. Just read OUR thread :-) Haven't heard much from Grouchy lately. Maybe yet another alter ego, Dr. Pseudoscience perhaps, is in development?

This place is always a better place when GUNHer and his predecessors are goofing around in full flight.

Over/Under: how long do you think it will be before a real Dartmouth posters pops up on this thread again??

Setting the over/under line as the first date of allowable Ivy League hockey practices in Fall 2023.

If College Hockey news is correct, In 1948 and 1949, Dartmouth made it to the NCAA Tournament finals but lost to Michigan and Boston College. Two of their players, however, were selected as "Most Outstanding Players in the NCAA Tournament." [TABLE="cellpadding: 1, cellspacing: 0"]

Yes, the first 5 MOPs were not on the championship winning team. However, after that only three times was the MOP not from the winning team (or 5, as 3 MOPs were named in 1960, non from the winning team), with Chris Terreri in 1985 being the last.

Long time fan of both the men's and women's hockey teams, and I still love to attend games but do not as often with my kids grown and moved away. I also have friends who attend regularly and have a couple of them who are well connected to the Dartmouth Athletics community. I like to read the USCHO fan forum posts, in the past thought I would become a poster but never really found the time to make a post until recent.

When my wife and kids first attended a men's game in 2002, the arena was shoulder to shoulder seating with passionate and energetic fans, and student section that was always a boisterous and rowdy bunch. I have great memories from watching games, and I especially liked watching players like David Jones scoring big goals and hearing the roar from the crowd, and another favorite in Tanner Glass making big hits that would especially get the student section going. Those teams had many exciting and talented players to watch and a few that moved on to play in the NHL.

Our kids played youth hockey during the early 2000's, and the camps that Coach Guadet and his staff/players ran throughout the summer, plus the attendance of a couple Dartmouth Players at youth hockey practices throughout the hockey season, made us want to support the team. Big Green Hockey was the Upper Valley Region (a population of approximately 120,000 residents) and it showed as Thompson Arena was packed and a fun place to be on the weekends. Coach Gaudet, his staff and players were a big part of connecting the Upper Valley Communities to Big Green Hockey! AD Josie Harper (retired 2009) was often seen attending and cheering at games, and most impressive was seeing President Wright attending the games! It didn't matter that the team went to the NCAA Tournament, as fans we knew they had a chance to win each game, the games were very entertaining and during the long cold winters it was the Big Green that gave the Upper Valley hockey fans/families something to do on the weekends. I do not think most people from afar realize the impact of Coach Gaudet's retirement (even though it was time) had on the program.

Most people on these boards know that a great coach being connected to the community alone does not win games. Teams that have a chance to win each game come from programs that attract and retain the right players that can give the team a chance to win!

In my friends opinion and IMO, the finger can easily be pointed at the hiring of the new Athletics Director Harry Sheehy, and it did not help having President Kim as the replacement for President Wright (thank god that only lasted a few years). When other teams within the ECAC were making big improvements to its facilities, hockey at Dartmouth did not, although the improvements were much needed and the coaches from both men's and women's teams certainly made it known - Sheehy had his priorities and it was not hockey. The support from admissions, the reduction in Financial Aid along with the much needed hockey facility improvements were among the key reasons for the downfall of Dartmouth Hockey - and for many other Big Green programs. I recall reading a story printed in the Upper Valley news that under Sheehy's tenure, the department had combined for more losing seasons than any other AD. Many sports, other than a select few, suffered severely under his leadership.

There is also a new issue that comes into play that impacts all Ivy's (the Transfer Portal). The unstable economy throughout North America making it even more difficult for the middle income wage earning families to afford an Ivy League education - lessening the talent pool. With this being said, and as one poster mentioned previously about being optimistic, especially with a new AD and pandemic issues in the past, I too am optimistic that the Big Green can begin to rise up in the standings and be a consistent contender for ECAC and Ivy League Championships - and who knows maybe a National Championship in the not so distant future.
