D3 Video Clearinghouse - Hockey Night in (insert name here)

Re: D3 Video Clearinghouse - Hockey Night in (insert name here)

Jumping ahead to Lake Placid - CBS College Sports has the final live on Saturday afternoon. Does anyone know if the NCAA plans to stream the Semi-Final games on Friday? I have been searching the web for any listing or information - none, nadda, nyet, nope, faggheddaboudit....

Be patient. Something is in the works. That's all I can say for now.

Don't hold your breath.

I brought this up to the powers that be after last season. I was given a list of the following excuses.

1. Lack of money (Despite the fact that they have been offered to have everything done for free by a certain internet provider who happens to stream the Primelink Shootout online as well)

2. Lack of people able to run it (I solved this problem for them)

3. Lack of equipment (See response to excuse #1)

4. Lack of bandwidth (A. See response to excuse #1, and B. Even if they had to use their own server, they seem to have no problem wasting bandwidth by streaming live video of the Angell College Center lobby

I also listed the countless advantages it would have to both the program (recruiting), the athletic department, and the school as a whole.

I did notice that Primelink did stream the Potsdam game at the Stafford this year, and attempted to stream the Oswego game but it crashed before the game started. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come, but with the responses I got from those who make the decisions, don't count on PSU emerging from the stone age anytime soon.

Primelink has streamed a few other Plattsburgh games this season as well as the Primelink tourney.

and while Bowdoin's Watson Arena is almost a duplicate of the Norwich's Kreitzberg Arena--but the lighting doesn't seem as as strong.

Go Cadets! Roll On!

Actually, shooting games as a photographer, the lighting in Watson is quite superior to that in Kreitzberg or Kenyon (1 1/2 to 2 full stops!). The differences you see might be in the quality of the camera used or the conversion/transmission software employed. Bowdoin has the camera mounted outside the front of the pressbox and it obviously has a protective housing that appears somewaht darkened. Whether that impacts the vid qaultiy I am not sure.

Could they be using a longer lens than they use at Kreitzberg? That's going make things look darker, of course.

I have watched two video streams from Bowdoin (Colby and Middlebury) and all of the Norwich home games via video. I am not sure what causes it but the videos from Bowdoin seem much darker and farther away that those from NU. Only a subjective opinion and of course the quality of the camera should have a great deal to do with it. I believe Bowdoin's programs are produced by the school while NU uses Northeast Sports Network.

Re: D3 Video Clearinghouse - Hockey Night in (insert name here)

I think a lot of the difference (and I also think this is implied in a few of the posts in this thread) simply stems from where a given arena happens to be able to accommodate a camera based on its configuration. It's safe to say that not a lot of DIII rinks were built with video coverage of games in mind. In the case of broadcasts like Gustavus, much of the what the coverage has going for it derives from the excellent sight lines available for shooting. Anyone who's watched TV coverage of a Duke home basketball game via the steeply angled view at Cameron Indoor Stadium should be familiar with the unnatural feel of less-than-ideal camera placement.

Re: D3 Video Clearinghouse - Hockey Night in (insert name here)

Basic premise - you have to start with a quality image - that implies adequate facility lighting with a high quality camera and lens - the new "pro-sumer" hd cameras with a studio package (large viewfinder and controls for focus and zoom on the tripod handles) are fine for single camera operations... Add in a mic for ambient crowd noise and mix a feed from the PA to get all the facts and you are in business.

Bandwidth (adequate bandwidth for your transmission path to the 'net) is usually the weakest link, as it is a variable cost so the budget minded will decide what they will spend without considering the effect on the image. Sometimes this will be dictated by the location of the facility and the service provider(s) that serve the area. (Elmira Domes being way, way off campus as one extreme with the brand new Campus Center at Oswego with a broadcast television facility in the building at the other end of the spectrum) Either one still needs a big 'ol fat pipe with a clean shot to the 'net to make nice pictures and sound.:D
