D3 2017 Offseason Thread: Coaching, Conferences, Etc.

Re: D3 2017 Offseason Thread: Coaching, Conferences, Etc.

apparently Chatham is off the market. Just hired Jessica Newstrom according to D3hockey

Sorry, but who?? Never heard of her. But I had never heard of the previous coach either so...now she has a chance to be a first time head coach....awesome for her! Must have been a small pool of applicants for a perennial losing program like this but at least in their new conference they'll be able to beat Lebanon Valley College and possibly Kings and Wilkes at first.

I'm not sure if Middlebury is even going to be able to rack up too many NESCAC championships over the next 5-10 years. The parity in that league is growing. Conn basically and predictably choked when it counted and several other teams are right there battling for the top in that league. Plattsburgh, obviously, with or without more Canadians. Elmira, in theory, yes. River Falls should play into the equation, as should Adrian, Norwich, and maybe a few others, at least until some other programs have a breakthrough into that group.

I was talking to an AD earlier this year and the way it was explained to me was: there are the top 15 or so programs, then there's the next 20 then there's everyone else. Their hope is to get to the top of the next 20 so they can break through to the top 15 over time.
Interesting perspective.

She was a player at Bethel and an assistant at Utica. One of the ways these new programs grow the sports is the more programs there are the more opportunities there are for careers after they're done playing. Other than former star players who grab a clipboard every coach was a "never heard of him/her" at one point in their career. I think in many cases a first timer getting a chance is better than a head coach with a lot of experience losing.

Nothing to lose in this case. I think it's often a matter of luck and timing when a coach agrees to take a position somewhere...it all depends on what school had an opening and when. If you or I became the coach at Chatham I think we'd soon become "a head coach with a lot of experience losing" no matter how much hockey knowledge we have or how good we actually are as coaches. Chatham is one of those schools where it doesn't really matter who the coach is because they're among the many schools in the "everyone else" category, as per GTOWN's post.

Re: D3 2017 Offseason Thread: Coaching, Conferences, Etc.

So if I've got it all figured out correctly we're looking at 63 total D3 teams in 2017-18, so 9 teams for the NCAA tournament, and then in 2018-19 the total goes up to 65 with the addition of Suffolk and Nazareth for a 10 team tournament field. This is what I have for next season:

2017-18

CHC
1 Becker
2 Canton
3 Endicott
4 Johnson and Wales (moving to NEHC in 18-19)
5 Morrisville
6 Nichols
7 Salem State (moving to NEHC in 18-19)

ECAC West
1 Buffalo
2 Cortland
3 Oswego
4 Plattsburgh
5 Potsdam

MIAC
1 Augsburg
2 Bethel
3 Concordia (MN)
4 Gustavus
5 Hamline
6 St. Benedict
7 St. Catherine
8 St. Mary's
9 St. Olaf
10 St. Thomas

NCHA
1 Adrian
2 Aurora
3 Concordia (WI)
4 Finlandia
5 Lake Forest
6 Marian
7 Northland
8 St. Norbert
9 St. Scholastica
10 Trine

NEHC
1 Castleton
2 New England College
3 Norwich
4 Plymouth State
5 Salve Regina (moving to CHC in 18-19)
6 Southern Maine
7 UMass-Boston
8 University of New England (moving to CHC in 18-19)
(Suffolk will be new and will join in 18-19)

NESCAC
1 Amherst
2 Bowdoin
3 Colby
4 Connecticut College
5 Hamilton
6 Middlebury
7 Trinity
8 Wesleyan
9 Williams

UCHC
1 Chatham
2 Elmira
3 Kings
4 Lebanon Valley
5 Manhattanville
6 Neumann
7 Stevenson
8 Utica
9 Wilkes
10 William Smith

WIAC
1 Wisconsin-Eau Claire
2 Wisconsin-River Falls
3 Wisconsin-Stevens Point
4 Wisconsin-Superior

63 TOTAL D-III TEAMS

For 2018-19:
65

Some are following their men's programs, some are looking to save travel costs.

And tournament expansion is not guaranteed.

Re: D3 2017 Offseason Thread: Coaching, Conferences, Etc.

I am 90% sure this will not be called the ECAC West next season.

Do you think yesterday's announcement that Plattsburgh will be adding women's LAX (making all 10 SUNYAC members particpants) could be part of a larger negotiation where the women's hockey schools add a sport they're missing and some combo of Genny, Freddy and Brockport add Women's Ice Hockey? It was a thought that occurred to me when I saw the news but I could be reading too much into it.

You're reading way too much into it.

Besides, why would Genny, Freddy, or Brockport give a hoot that Plattsburgh is adding women's lax? Each school has their own budget to worry about. They don't care what other schools do.

My thinking was they were coordinating adding programs to various sports within the SUNYAC to strengthen the SUNYAC as a whole...of course the first and immediate flaw in that thought process is how does adding 1 program to a 9 conference sport "strengthen" it other than even scheduling? Just me getting my hopes up for a a seven team SUNYAC WIH conference...

Not really that far fetched to me. Maybe 'coordinating' is too strong but given the group's common interests I'm sure they share ideas and over time this would tend to occur naturally

Re: D3 2017 Offseason Thread: Coaching, Conferences, Etc.

I noticed that Wilkes is not listed among teams in the UCHC in that article.

Re: D3 2017 Offseason Thread: Coaching, Conferences, Etc.

From the linked article;
"Upon its launch next season, the league will feature ten full members for men, and nine for women. Elmira, Utica, Hobart and William Smith, King's, Lebanon Valley, Manhattanville, Chatham, Neumann, and Stevenson will place both men's and women's entries into the league's inaugural season, while Nazareth will field a men's team exclusively.

Each league will gain an additional full member in year two when the newly created men's and women's programs at Wilkes University will play an abbreviated UCHC schedule in their inaugural 2017-18 season before assuming full-fledged conference membership with a complete league schedule in 2018-19."
