Known for awhile now by Gopher fans, Beaver fans and assorted other followers of the WCHA. Steph will make a nice addition to the Beavers...and I believe will be an impact player for them after sitting the mandated season. My guess would have her on a 1st or 2nd line and a fairly prominent PP and PK role also...when the time comes. Nice future linemate for Miss Lushanko? ;)

BTW...anyone know anything about the absence of Kristi King from the 2012-2013 BSU roster?

My understanding Kristi has some medical issues she is working through but plans to attend BSU and hopefully play

When a player sits out a year they have to be enrolled in their new school and taking a full course schedule.

Can anyone answer this question? A girl, not a freshman, determines before the season begins that she is not happy and would like to transfer to another d1 program.

She has participated in preseason practices, but the season has not started and has not been rostered for any games.

If she leaves the team prior to playing in a game does she maintain her eligibility or did the fact that she practiced have an impact in this regard?

I don't know, and if this matters to you, I'd check with the NCAA. Even enrolling as a scholarship athlete might be enough to start the clock. Answers you get here, unless substantiated by a link to an NCAA bylaw, should be taken with a grain of salt.

I believe the 5 year rule starts when you enter college. So this freshman would have 5 years to use her 4 years of eligibility starting when she started school. http://www.playyourgame.com/ncaa_eligibility_explained.html

In regards to 4 years of eligibility, if she does not play in any games she could use the redshirt exception and continue to have 4 years of eligibility. http://www.ghsportsservices.com/NCAARULES.html

This does not address transfer rules and eligibility at other schools. If she signed a letter of intent she would have to get a release to play at another school. In women's hockey it seems that releases are granted liberally but whether or not she could play at the new school immediately would depend on a lot of factors. If its another team within the conference she might have to wait a year. More facts and research would be needed to answer this question. Hope this helps.

Ok, next question. If said D1 player has played in at least 1 D1 game this season what are the consequences of transferring immediately to a D3 program?

You are a month into school. Basically you would be chucking the first semester, and starting over, which isn't a big deal school wise, but you would miss out on a good chunk of the season. Might as well just chuck the whole season, enroll in a community college nearby and take a few classes and play U19, then start fresh next fall.
