D1 Commitments 2011-2012

Her little brother plays on my kid's peewee team, her middle brother plays for the Edina Varsity and her dad was a Wolverine for 4 years and drafted by les Habs. She's got some bloodlines.

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

It's all in how you read it. Makes perfect sense if you use "defense" as opposed to "forward", not "defense" as opposed to "offense". Most of us aren't that literate in our first language, let alone a second. Anyway, my guess would be Tea Villila. If it is anybody else, they're getting a little long in the tooth.

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

So far for next year, UConn's three recruits are all Minnesota HS girls, as well as 3 of 5 for Harvard. If my math is right, next year Harvard will have 10 MN players on their roster, all but one of whom played HS hockey--the other is a Shattuck girl. UConn will have 7. Quinnipiac has 2 recruits for 2011-12, Syracuse 3, and Vermont 3.

Minnesota currently has 123 varsity HS Girls' Hockey teams.

IMHO, this a side affect due to a thinner Ontario class this year, so more recruits from Minnesota and out West. Not knocking Minnesota hockey here, just stating what others have noticed as well.

Recruit Numbers over the last 6 years show Minny and Ontario always clear top two sources.

2005-2006 On...37, Minny...29, Total...211
2006-2007 On...29, Minny...40, Total...201
2007-2008 On...37, Minny...29, Total...166
2008-2009 On...38, Minny...37, Total...213
2009-2010 On...52, Minny...32, Total...211
2010-2011 On...57, Minny...39, Total...209

Last time Minny had more D1 recruits than Ontario was in 06-07, that is five classes in the past. There is also a noticable smaller class size four years ago (166 vs 200+ ). Wondering if we will see a repeat of that cycle this year?.

My prediction is Ontario will end up with about 30 this year, Minnesota 45-50.

Don't Canadians tend to release their commitments a lot later than the American kids? I'm sure schools like BU, who don't seem to have a lot of commits yet will end up having a few ON kids.

Population of Ontario: 13.2M
Population of Minnesota: 5.2M

Taking the large difference in population into account, it would seem Minnesota is doing pretty well.

I would be the first to admit, however, is that compared to Minnesota Ontario is consistently able to produce a good deal more of the very high end (National team quality) players. That said, just think of how much more competitive USA hockey would be if there were 10 more states producing the number of D1-type players that Minnesota does currently.

Providence will have 5 MN HS developed girls next year.

The total amount of recruits out of Ontario is much larger than those numbers. Most of the second tier recruits out of Ontario end up in the CIS rather than on D1 teams, as cost comparisons become a consideration for those that cannot land a substantial scholly or FA package. In a typical year about 150 Ontario recruits land on college teams, D1, CIS and some D3. The top 5 or 6 CIS teams would be midpack D1 teams (McGill, Laurier, Alberta etc). The rest of the CIS teams are similar in caliber to D3 teams.

So who are some big names that are still uncommitted for 2011?
Kendall Coyne, Sarah Robson, Emily Fulton, Gabrielle Davidson? any word on where they're headed yet?

Emily Fulton has committed somewhere a while ago, but it hasn't been made public. It shouldn't come as a big shock to anyone on this board.

This weekend up in Kitchener for the Can-Am and lots of talk about a few girls still available this class. Jessica Brown formerly of Shatuck St. Mary's now playing for Pittsburgh hasn't signed. As for Coyne, it has been pretty quiet about where she's going. She's probably still trying for Harvard based on an article written last summer. Maybe a PG year at Berkshire will help her get her scores up. She deserves to go somewhere good!

Robson and Fulton are both committed to different Ivy Schools...not sure about the others, but it is well-known where Coyne would like to go if she can make the grade academically.
