Covid 19

Re: Covid 19

A couple of guys didn't take their gloves off shaking hands after men's league the other night, thought it was a little overkill. After some of the nasty locker rooms over the years, if I'm not dead from a viral infection already, I think I'm good.

Re: Covid 19

Good time to ask. Is the coronavirus outbreak causing any of you to stay home when you would normally attend a game tonight/this weekend?

No, but just to be on the safe side we're going to skip our usual pre-game meal of Lake Tung Ting shrimp.

USA hockey and Hockey Canada have both advised that gloves stay on for fist bump rather than hand shakes:

I do wonder how long Coronavirus could live inside a hockey glove... But yes absolutely those locker rooms are going to get you sick anyway if it's in there.

Emily Kaplan of ESPN made a similar comment about how disgusting NHL locker rooms and equipment are. COVID-19 is the least of their worries... :D

Re: Covid 19

...Just practice common sense hygiene and don’t take this (media) circus too seriously!

Not trying to be irrationally dismissive of what's happening but I do think the constant stream of "the world is ending" headlines is feeding irrational fears. Yes, people are getting sick and yes, the virus spreads insidiously and covertly. But the infection rate is actually quite low and the fatality rate even lower, claiming primarily the frail elderly and others with existing respiratory diseases. We have had strains of flu and viruses in my memory that were far more deadly to far more people.

Re: Covid 19

There's really only so much you can do. You still gotta live your life. With some people not getting severe symptoms and cases going undetected the real "fear" should be with the elderly/people with other health issues (from what I have read anyeay).

Name one stain of the flu more deadly. Swine? 0.02-0.2%%. Spanish? Likely around 2%. What about otherviruses? MERS? Never spread. SARS? Also didn’t spread as much. This disease is as deadly as the last great pandemic and spreads just as efficiently. This is something we can and should take seriously.

I saw it best the other day, maybe when it comes to exponential functions, you err on the side of caution.

Oh, and next time you see an elderly person, tell them not to worry, they only have to not roll a 6 on a die and they get to live. Ditto with people like myself who have asthma. Jesus you’re a cold *******.

Re: Covid 19

Absolutely. In the case of Albany, NY - which is hosting regionals for both hoop and hockey this year - the arena is owned and operated by the county, so they will definitely have a say in the decisions, should local cases emerge. Given that the county is largely broke, I'm sure they'll take every opportunity to see to it that the events go on as planned.:D

Absolutely!

Depending on what you choose to believe, the Spanish flu's mortality-rate was up to to 20% of reported cases. Anecdotally, one could be symptomatic at breakfast and die before dinner.

This one doesn't look as bad, thankfully, and the diagnostics are light-years better now than they were in 1918.

Still, we need to work as quickly as possible as we can on a vaccine, despite our assurances from Dr. Trump. The Spanish flu took the summer off, then came back with a vengeance once the winter returned.
