COVID-19 The 7th Part: We're Gonna Be Number One Soon!

Re: COVID-19 The 7th Part: We're Gonna Be Number One Soon!

But the 1918 pandemic did not lessen in that way. It came back late in 1918 and was far more devastating in many parts of the world, including this country late in 1918 and into 1919 than it was early in 1918. And we don't completely know anything yet about this virus. Is it seasonal, is it not? Widespread testing and contact tracing are how we could have assured better outcomes. The odds of an effective vaccine or treatment regimen before the beginning of 2021 at the earliest are almost zero. If we had the political will and leadership, we could have widespread testing before the end of the year. We won't, and however many people have died from this in April and May will likely be joined by just as many in November and December. And it doesn't have to be this way. THAT'S why our president is a mass murderer.

Make no mistake, I'm not for opening everything. I am for opening some businesses, if they can show that they can operate safely, until a vaccine is found/etc. I mean, as of right now, the MN State Fair is not cancelled, and it should be. If that is cancelled, many will go bankrupt, which completely sucks. However, if we can save SOME people from going bankrupt, we should take actions to do so.

I also 100% agree that our president is a total nimrod on this issue.

The primary problem with the loan program will be this. It was intended as a bridge for small businesses. To get them from point A to point B while everything is shut down. The bridge is going to be too short to cover the gap because there will be a push to keep things closed through summer.

You and I suffer from the same affliction Brent, and that is we are often blinded by our own passion about certain things, and it prevents a deeper understanding of issues. I used to be like that on gun control and it has taken me close to two decades to come around. How many people needlessly died while I held on to the flawed notion that "if you outlaw the guns only outlaws will have guns" and other such simplistic tripe.

You don't get this coronavirus thing at all. We CAN prevent bankruptcies, we CAN prevent deaths, we CAN mitigate the spread of this, and we CAN do it without "opening" anything too early. Universal basic income (UBI) is one example of how we can do some of it. Our politicians (and a lot of our citizenry) simply do not have the imagination to do so. And the president is not a nimrod. Mike Babcock was a nimrod for coaching the Wings out of a Stanley Cup title in 2009. trump is so much worse than that there really aren't any adjectives that effectively describe just how evil and awful this president is, so I'm just sticking with the accurate description of mass murderer.

I suspect this is going to change people under about 35 for their whole lives. You can see people older than that are already so set in their presumptions about the world that they are like buggy whip manufacturers uncomprehendingly staring as automobiles fly by. Events of this magnitude (the Panic of 1893, the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement, 9/11) change society. We Olds are rushed even further into obsolescence and irrelevance.

People like dx and younger are going to change with this, raise their young families with new priorities and new lessons, and embody a new world. Our time is over. Judging by the selfishness and sterility of the last 40 years, thank god.

The MN governor allowed landscaping to open up early, and is looking at other businesses, and then will decide. Golf courses COULD open up, with limitations (the popular notion is twosomes at most) because there is enough distance between groups and such. The other thing is leaving lakes/rivers for boaters and fishers alone, because of the distancing in those activities, which ties into the resorts that midwesterners love.

On the other hand, malls? Nope. They should stay closed. There is a balance, we just have to figure it out.

Edit: Kepler:
This will be like how The Depression formed our great-grandparents (or grandparents, depending on how old you are).

Imagination? No. The republicans have already said they don’t want people getting money for not working as of course, we’ll all just be lazy gits who never want to work ever again. It’s the same old republican trope and why I find it funny SB owners who unabashedly vote R want their money while their chosen lackeys have been yelling about evil socialism

Except in Michigan where the dumba**es think the boat launch is a swell place to congregate in large groups and mingle with each other "away from the prying eyes of Big Brother."

Station an officer there, and start handing out fines. I'd have no issue with that.

In my case, parents. :(

Yes. These things don't scar, they mold.

The good news is bad times produce people who care more about each other. The easy young adulthoods of the 50s and 80s produced the greedy, superficial, selfish as-shole cultures that gave us Reagan, Dubya, and Dump. I hope when people are reminded we actually need each other they will begin to start treating each other as fellow human beings rather than business or ideological abstractions.

Now I'm seeing "Whitmer=Hitler" comparisons. Just because they can't take their power boat out or buy seeds from Meijer.

Problem = solution.

Just because you are afraid of big brother does not mean he is already following you.

Have you read the NY Times expose on cell phone location data that they published earlier this year?

Trust me when I say Big Brother is absolutely watching. It's just a matter of whether you care or not.

Yep. Five people out on a boat for the day isn't social distancing. Ten guys lined up along the pier with their lines in the water isn't social distancing.

Me, out on my bike, all alone with no one around me for miles. That's social distancing. I've been practicing for this my entire life.

Those are usually robo-posts or memes created by RNC sock-puppet accounts. Unfortunately, they get amplified by actual Republican voters who like/Re-Tweet/re-post them.
