Now whether or not that wins elections is another story. If we turn out the people with an even modest amount of critical thinking ability we might see an election like 2018.

Is everyone reminding their friends, family and neighbors to make sure they are registered properly and already making their plan to vote? It's more than just saying "I'm gonna vote." Do they know their (current -- it could change) polling location? Do they know the rules in their state about absentee/vote by mail? Are they already making preliminary plans on how they will accomplish casting a ballot in 2020?

Yes, this is very important. GOP disenfranchisement can only be ultimately stopped systemically, but in the meantime it can be defeated one-on-one if the voter is actively protecting her vote. So, you keep making sure you are on the rolls and you provide all the bureaucratic BS they put up as hurdles. You keep current ID and make sure you know whether they are planning to pull a switch at the last minute. And you remind all your friends and family.

We're white; the Republicans don't stop us from voting with guns yet. (If you're black they use the cops, the injustice system, mass incarceration, and felony disenfranchisement. If you're brown they use concentration camps.) We can stay ahead of them -- in the end, they aren't smart or they wouldn't be Republicans; you can observe that with the D-1 interlopers here. They have the animal guile of the con artist or the bully, but actual intelligence will always beat them.

Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. When the right controls the government the government itself becomes the enemy of democratic institutions. We must be aware of this and correct for it at every step.

It is a lot of new cases for Georgia...for NY 2700 is headed in the right direction.

Georgia is only going to get worse in the next two weeks and beyond.

The thing that should be scaring people is that even though New York is going down in cases and deaths the overall number across the country is not going down to match. That means it is rising in other places to match. It was one thing when we lost 2k people a day and 1/3 came from one area but now that isnt how it is playing out.

So really its just about guns.

Because the rest of those things. Blocking intersections, screaming, etc. happens a lot in protests.

They entered a State Capitol building with their guns. The intent was to intimidate and threaten lawmakers. That IS a form of terrorism.

No I am 100% with you. People are acting like we are closer to the end than the beginning and that is not the case. We are right in the middle, right where the experts said we would be when May hit.

The thing is though this response was predictable. If you go back to the old threads we all said that by Memorial Day at the latest people would be going full on looney tunes. People are stupid, and they are scared and that is a lethal combination. Plus Americans dont like to hear they cant do something, even if they have no need to actually do it. Add in the lack of distractions from sports and you have a recipe for disaster.

The rural counties are long gone. You want soccer mom from the suburbs like 2018. Then you with the urban regions you have 30% of the land mass and 60% of the people. Let the GOP spend another four years with maps based on number of cows, instead.

Are you sure? When I took the tour of the MN state capitol, the definitely made it clear no guns were allowed. I'll be surprised if Michigan allows it. I just think they looked the other way to avoid a bad situation.

Ironic, as I was reading your post I was also IM'ing with a friend who said, "I can't believe people think this is going to be over like next week."

Also, he lives in a very rural area, where he says they all blame everything and everybody except the real culprit -- nature.

Fun fact, Iowa's GOP led government specifically made it legal to carry in the capitol. It's still illegal in other government offices and the judicial branch still prohibits it in any parts of county or state buildings it controls.

'Went' to another Public Health lecture via zoom. This one was done by a veterinarian. She used some slides from her talk from 5 yrs ago (unchanged) and one of them was pulled from a 2012 book "Spillover" which was warning about the Zoonotic spread and how it was a matter of time before and a list of all the things that this pandemic was hitting. She was an engaging speaker. Also talked about things like what you should do with your beasties if you are diagnosed, what appropriate hygiene is if you have a pet and bringing them out in the world, the various meat packing stuff, etc. They are going to be putting it up on their site but not for a week. Yes. It is perfectly legal to open carry into the Michigan Capitol building.

Here are those prohibited premises:

-Schools or school property but may carry while in a vehicle on school property while dropping off or picking up if a parent or legal guardian
-Public or private day care center, public or private child caring agency, or public or private child placing agency.
-Sports arena or stadium
-A tavern where the primary source of income is the sale of alcoholic liquor by the glass consumed on the premises
-Any property or facility owned or operated by a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other place of worship, unless the presiding official or officials allow concealed weapons
-An entertainment facility that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more
-A hospital
-A dormitory or classroom of a community college, college, or university
-A Casino

The kicker, even with a conceal carry permit for handguns, you cannot conceal carry in those same locations per state law.

In an effort to provide a line in the sand against these Call-of-Doodie cos-players, Michigan did put some bite into the brandishing laws in 2015:

2015 House Bill 4161: Revise firearms "brandishing" law - Michigan Votes. To define “brandishing” a firearm as “to point, wave about, or display in a threatening manner with the intent to induce fear in a reasonable person.” Under current law “brandishing” is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail.

Because that $100 misdemeanor ticket can really put a hurting on these guys disability checks.

One thing I decided to do as a measure of self-care:

I've been drinking more and more since shelter in place started in Michigan. Wine, whiskey, beer, vodka, etc. My attitude became "aw, f-ck it, I don't care any more," and so decided to have a glass of something every night. But more and more, it became incredibly difficult to get out of bed in the morning. Hangovers are not fun at all. And Wednesday night, where it was abundantly clear I didn't look well to my classmates in a Zoom meeting, I logged off and started sobbing uncontrollably (kind of like Jessie in Saved By The Bell). I felt like a fraud, and a failure, and thought I couldn't do this any more.

Thursday, after waking up with a harsh hangover, I decided to go dry until Michigan's shelter in place was lifted and there was a sense of near normal (at least consistent work and worship at Grace Episcopal had resumed). I can't deal with bad hangovers right now. And I can't be an effective behavior technician, delivery driver, grad student, accidental trans rights activist, etc, if I'm hungover most of the time. I also know I don't drink nearly as much or as often when things are as they should be. I also know right now, I have a phone and I should use it instead of reaching for another glass of wine.
