All the hubbub around the SA variant and closing the borders appears to be for naught. A case was already identified in Belgium with no known connection to South Africa at all.

Egypt right? Yeah that indicates community spread. All this slight ban does is discourage places like SA from honest reporting.

however SA has a similar problem to us in regards to people who don’t want to get vaccinated vs lack of availability and that’s why these mutations will keep happening since were encouraging it

It’s now detected in the UK too. I give it about a half day before we know about cases in Germany

With this disease, by the time they see the new variant it is already too late. It is safer to just assume if it is in one country it is probably in many as long as travel isn't restricted.

Yep... Im figuring that someone from the US traveled to South Africa and brought it back sometime around the start of November...

That’s probably close to accurate.

we only know about this because SA is so good at tracking variants. And so far omicron is easily detected on pcr. With how long the HK cases took to test positive, it’s likely people who brought it here never got sick or tested positive and it’s just been silently spreading.

whether or not it competes with delta will be interesting but it’s doing pretty well in SA

Until we start requiring 14-day quarantines for all border crossings, we will never be able to control new variants within our borders.

I believe it’s been found in two completely different parts of England.

Maine played a game in Portland tonight and based off the shots of the crowds it looked like maybe 10% of people were wearing masks, which is hard to believe given we have record hospitalizations. I can’t believe how bad our country has screwed up the last six months. There was zero reason to go away from wearing masks indoors.

Does anyone know what is happening with contact tracing? At a minimum we should have a really good idea where it is spreading and work to minimize it. I assume corporate interests have shut this down, which is a massive disgrace.

We can't even get people to vaccinate. Which is extremely straight forward.

It’s time to starry pushing the morons out of society. Flights, restaurants, etc etc
