Covfefe-19 The 12th Part: The Only Thing Worse Than This New Board Is TrumpVirus2020

If Americans werent self centered, egotistical, greedy azzholes none of this would be necessary. I dont know about you but if I ever thought I might have spread the virus to someone and it caused them issues (or jesus killed them) the amount of guilt I would feel would be off the charts. I dont care if going to a restaurant will guarantee me a 4 way with any 3 women I choose (and my gf endorses it!) that isnt worth the risk to other people.

If it is just me fine, but if I get it my gf gets it and if she gets it her parents get it and her dad dies. (as would both of my parents if they got it) I am not risking that just so I can go have a drink at the bar or visit my buddy at his restaurant...not in the current climate of COVID.

Covid, sorry. You think Iowa is sequencing lol

Why not? Maine is.

(actually my company is doing covid sequence analysis for Maine and also samples taken by UConn health in CT)

we’ve been tracking variants and can tell you if the strain someone has variants that link it to Seattle, England, Italy, etc

Just an iowa joke.

glad someone is- as has been pointed out here, the US is way behind on sequencing in general

The solution to a leaky dam isn’t to blow it up.

edit: and I don’t think you’re advocating that. That’s hovey’s job.

alll we have to do is pay businesses not to open.

we can afford it

you’d have a better shot if she was one of the three that you choose ; )

Supposedly it could take 4-6 weeks to alter the vaccine to protect against the SA strain if it’s found that current vaccines aren’t going to be effective . mRNA basically plug and play

I’m going to unload some questions that have been rattling around in my head for a few weeks now. Not directed at you, just asking the universe.
4-6 weeks to create, how many weeks to ramp production?
What happens to the existing doses?
What happens to people who have already had their vaccine?
What about people who have one dose?
Can we double up to get the variants at the same time? Would it be a single “configuration” to get both or just go after the dominant strain? Or would you get a cocktail?

100%.

We can way more than afford it. Hell, we’ve done it to farmers to the tune of 40% of their income this year.

It's pretty weak that we have socialism for huge corporations, but can't pay small business owners to stay closed. Amazon is run by the richest guy in the world, and he could pay his workers a lot of money to work in bad conditions, and also afford plenty of PPE- let alone the idea that that company has done really well....

And instead of paying airline workers who are laid off directly, we give it to the companies, who then filter it down through people who are still working. Makes no sense.

But the idea that a small restaurant owner pretty much has to stay open so that they can have *some* income for the owners and workers when they could get direct support- that's pretty insane. Ignore the morons who cry "freedumb"- there are plenty of owners who would be happy to shut down for 3 months if they got paid to do so- which would be cheaper than paying Delta, and more effective at preventing spread..... Kills me.

Welfare for people who don't need it is totally fine, but for those who require it is the worst thing. How so many people have gotten duped over that is crazy- and there have been MANY on this board who complain about welfare for the poor, but have no problem for the same thing for the rich and large corporations.

Over the noon hour I saw an interview with the Governor of West Virginia. I believe they have everyone in their nursing homes vaccinated, and I think they have their healthcare workers vaccinated. He said that they're starting on everyone 80 and above. When they run out of those people, they're going 70 and above, and then 60 and above, and so on. As he pointed out, it's not exactly rocket science. Get it into the arms of the aged and everything takes care of itself.

Don’t start agreeing with the current guidelines too quickly. I read an article last night that said the pathetic rollout in many states means we’re nearing your “most pragmatic” approach of just sticking it in “anyone’s arm at large stadiums” to not let too much vaccine go to waste. Yikes.
As a healthcare worker, I’m disappointed that 50% of us are refusing to take it in many places. Unless you have a legitimate medical reason, take the **** vaccine.

Edit: Props to West Virginia and the Dakotas for quickly distributing their doses so far. Healthcare workers/nursing home residents were the “easy” ones to vaccinate, and they’re getting it done in spades. I find it possible to acknowledge they’re capable of doing a good job and still acknowledge it could be more difficult for a state like California to get it done quickly for a number of reasons.

I gotta assume Walz figures a lot of places are skirting the rules anyways and are willing to lose their business to do so what is the point. He can't really do anything anymore and too many people just dont care.

At this point I have no clue anymore. The amount of people willing to risk their lives to eat crappy food at mediocre restaurants for stupid prices just astounds me. The amount of business owners willing to risk their workers and their customers lives is even crazier. The priorities of America are so out of whack I dont think there is any way to solve it. Do the right thing and you are a tyrant, do the wrong thing and people die.

(I am not supporting or ripping Walz with this post...in all honesty I am glad I dont have his job)

I know of one bar that filed to become a church when the second round of restrictions went into place. They have about 20-25 regulars that show up most nights, there's a daily reading, they make "donations" and then the drinks and food are "donated" for all to consume buffet style. The owner of the bar already happened to be a minister a while back so he could perform a wedding for some friends.

Other bars are still open, and they're not taking the time to even attempt being clever in skirting the rules.

When I was a kid in school, I recall seeing pictures of the polio vaccine being administered with people lined up everywhere, almost like the old WWII recruiting stations doing the qualifying physicals. Why is it so hard to get something like that setup today when we were able to do it 70 years ago?

It's one of my most distinct recollections of elementary school. A massive line of kids down the hallway, and at the end the line you turned into a room where a surly looking woman holding what looked like a .44 magnum in her hand scowled, rolled up your sleeve and it was done.

It's almost as if spending fifty years cynically berating the public sector and starving it of resources because "government can't solve problems" and "private enterprise is freedom and government is communism" in order to maximize private fortunes and business interests put a dent in the ability of our society to deliver necessary services in situations in which user fees are not appropriate.

It's almost as if conservative economic ideology is a death sentence.
