My challenge to our Covid isn't a big deal posters: find some international news sources to see what they are saying.

To the ones who claim a liberal conspiracy to make Trump look bad, how did the liberals get the whole world in on it? Over a million deaths worldwide. That is approximately 1 in 10,000 people dead from the 'rona. For those that like those odds, do you play mega millions or power ball? You are 40,000 times more likely to die from Coronavirus (based on numbers so far, numbers that continue to increase) than you are to hit the jackpot.

The people I referred to are in their 70's and 80's and were brought up with a much clearer sense for love of country and the notion that there is an awful lot out there that can kill us. Remember, they LIVED thru the last pandemic that killed 100,000 people in the US, 1969 and very few even knew it occurred (ask them). Do you forget about that one? You know, the one where everyone one was so scared for their lives that they forgot to social distance OR wear a mask as 400,000 people converged on WOODSTOCK! The only thing spreading at Woodstock were legs and drugs.

Do you really believe that people over the age of 70 sit there and cower in the corner thinking about every little thing that could kill them? If they have kids or grandkids, they would probably sit there and worry a lot about THEIR futures vs their own. IF, and a BIG IF, they were thinking about it, they would probably thank God that they didn't live in New York or Massachusetts where old people really do go to die.

You're comparing apples and astrophysics.

NEJM has come out with an editorial excoriating t'Dump-ster Fire our country is (this is truly shocking) and the former CDC leader has also come out and called on the current head of CDC to admit fault and fall on his sword for the good of the country.

AMA is tepidly making commentary but still has done nothing to sanction the snake oil docs who are spewing falsehoods ::mad face::

And now there are things floating in the intertubes that tDUmp caught it for the good of the country in an act of Patriotism. You cannot make this stuff up.

You realize, of course, that the population of the US has pretty much doubled since 1969, right?

As someone who lived through that pandemic, I can say unreservedly that no one (0) missed a single day of school, no one wore masks, and there were no lockdowns. And yet 99.95% of the population survived, and there was literally NO drama.

Thing is ... our elders at the time had literally survived real live WARS (as in WW2, Korea and WW1). That means they came back here to the greatest country in the world, after having survived wars in which large percentages of their participants did not survive. Coming back from something that had a 10%-20% fatality rate for participants, having a 1 in 2,000 chance of losing your life to a virus was nothing to be feared. That's pretty much the same ratio as the Wuhan Flu. Yet SO many folks these days act just SO terrified.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again ... as a country, and as a people, we have gotten SO soft.

Our soldiers who died on the beaches of Normandy would be embarrassed to see all of this ...

I’ll say the same thing I did on Facebook about NEJM:

I get what they’re trying to do. But this is just... I don’t know. It doesn’t sit right with me.

Come out and endorse a candidate. Don’t mealymouth it. The knuckledraggers don’t read NEJM (or more likely will proudly exclaim they won’t read it “again”). The people who do read it are probably voting for Biden already.

But just maybe, instead of endorsing some nebulous “change in leadership” they should have endorsed a specific candidate like Scientific American did. It was an absolutely stark and shocking moment to read a statement from an apolitical organization endorsing a person.

That headline, “NEJM endorses Joe Biden” might change enough minds or motivate someone to vote.

An endorsement should be just that: An endorsement. Otherwise it’s just a footnote to an appendix. We’re in a “win or die” scenario. Act like it.
