Over 30k new cases #openitup

This is a good site, showing up to date Rt values:

https://rt.live/

Not sure about that data- according to that site Michigan has been below 1 for all 3 months- started very low, and has slowly trended up. Whereas the cases started slow, the rate per day peaked in what looks to be late March, early April. And has since leveled off- not to zero, but considerably less than it was 2 months ago. So the R# for our state doesn't make much sense. (not counting the May 12 spike area)

And we are still top 10 for cases and deaths overall. Just that now, it's MUCH better than it was 2 month ago.

Those first three are, I believe, the first time over 3000 cases.

Also, saw a chart that for the last month or so, new cases in the US have been plateauing, staying roughly around the same level. Not increasing, but not coming down either.

About the past week, they're starting to rise again. Pretty obvious, and sharp rise, also.

23 Clemson Players Tested Positive

CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson has had 23 football players and two football staff members test positive for COVID-19, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter. The school on Friday announced 28 total positive test results among student-athletes and staff in June, but did not specify the sports they represented. The dramatic increase comes one week after Clemson announced two positive cases among football players.

More than half of the players were asymptomatic, and there are no hospitalizations. Those who tested positive will be isolated for at least 10 days and need to be asymptomatic for the last three days before they can come out of the isolation. Known contacts, and anyone who was within six feet of someone who tested positive for 10 or more minutes, have been notified. They will isolate for 14 days. Voluntary workouts will not be shut down.

The news comes on the heels of Texas announcing Thursday that it had 13 football players with positive cases and 10 more in isolation. Houston announced June 12 that it was suspending all voluntary workouts after six symptomatic student-athletes tested positive. As college football programs across the country grapple with how to keep their athletes safe during the return to voluntary workouts, Clemson’s team count is now the highest known nationally.

Really good news for all the athletes who otherwise would have been sacrificed to stupidity and greed.

Except of course it won't change anything. Stupidity and greed aren't going anywhere.

I think today was a real turning point for sports in the US. Really bad news for MLB, NBA, PGA, College Football, NHL, and MLS. We’ll see what happens but I think all of the news today has made it a lot harder to move forward with games.

It also appears to have lit a fire under the people who don't want to acknowledge the virus as a thing. Acknowledging this as a problem is "overreacting".

I said a month ago...fans figure the players even of they get it will be fine so the games should be played because...reasons. Now they are saying "only like 10% of the population is gonna get it so we will be fine".

Drew,

I think you are wrong. I think unless the stars say they arent playing (like Kyrie is intimating for the NBA) all the leagues will open. Baseball will have a deal in place in 2 weeks tops and the NBA is going to go through with their Di$ney plan because they think the isolation will be enough. (Di$ney workers wont be isolated so they are wrong) The NFL wont admit they are wrong and the NHL cant afford to cancel the season. They will play, players will get sick and the fans wont care because they need their entertainment.

I agree with this.

The rich, the GOP, and the cops have to get sports up and going again. We've seen that when the anesthetic wears off people wake up and become politically active. They even take to the streets.

God is dead. Sports is the opiate of the masses.

Orlando is the biggest hot spot in the country right now though. The NBA owners are seriously rich and they already got most of the season in. I just don’t see their plan as workable, especially as we see more and more teams across all sports that try to start practicing have outbreaks.

MLB players have the owners over a barrel. It will be interesting to see how that gets resolved. The NHL owners and players both need the money so they will probably go forward no matter what. Not sure how well it will work out though.

I really have no clue what will happen with football.

They dont care how much money they have. They want more. The NBA has shown they have no logic when it comes to this crap. They have a rule that in their game room you cant play doubles ping pong due to the virus. So playing body on body on the court is not dangerous...but playing next to someone later on in a game room is?

Unless a player gets hospitalized or the players refuse to show up they will play. The owners dont care.

One thing this week did was bring TX and FL from the back and into the midst of the leaders for all cases. Whereas before they were behind states like CT and MD who were just doing a better job of of testing, now they're poised to go after NY for the lead:
Code:
Total cases in thousands

1. 409 NY
2. 171 NJ
3. 170 CA
4. 135 IL
5. 107 TX
6. 106 MA
7. 89 FL

If they go through with this and it blows up in their face it hurts the brand long term. A lot has changed in the last couple of weeks and I think they wind up pulling out.

With the nature of basketball it only takes a few guys testing positive to really screw things up. For example what happens if Lebron and AD both test positive?

As an aside, if the NHL and NBA do go forward with the playoffs I wonder what the politics will be like around how long players have to stay out if they do test positive? I could see that getting super messy.

This is true of everything, not just sports. People are selfish and want what they want- they don't give a rats a55 that anyone else but them gets sick, suffers, dies or their lives are disrupted. They are the supposed to provide the entertainment, service, fulfill a need so being a sacrificial lamb is a given
