Re: Covfefe-19 The 10th Part: Might As Well Reject No Shirt, No Shoes While You're At

Experts should be capable of producing hard data. As a matter of fact, he should be screaming with data in his hands. Moreso when there's data that displays the opposite result from his stated opinion.

Completely agree. I was a little dismayed, seemed like Tur was as well, when he just outright dismissed the hamster study and put up 100-year-old studies (that aren't necessarily comparable other than they were both conducted during viral pandemics) to refute them. A good scientist doesn't have an opinion on fact, they let research tell the story. If new research tells a different story, it's probably because we know something more than we did before. Don't trust it? Test it and see if you can reproduce the results. If you can't, try it again. Publish your results. Let your peers tell you why you're right or wrong.

He's a smart guy making a good point about testing and tracing, but using words easily twisted to mean something completely different. He would have been much better off saying masks offer some temporary protection but don't offer a permanent solution to the real problem.

Re: Covfefe-19 The 10th Part: Might As Well Reject No Shirt, No Shoes While You're At

I can imagine that's it. I see people in the stores, all masked up, buying their **** for their big Memorial Day weekend, where they're gonna be getting drunk and hanging off each other, wrestling and playing football, crowded around the picnic table, etc.

As I said yesterday, second/third week of June is gonna be interesting.

Just emailed The Fitz to make sure they knew we weren't coming up this weekend. :( :(

So instead, we got an assload of meat (phrasing) today from Costco. I'm going to smoke 15 lbs of butt (phrasing) and freeze it so we can stretch it out (phrasing) to minimize our community contacts.

So you're going to smoke and stretch out your assload of meat?

Pretty self-confident there, aren't you?

Looks like NH and ME cases are on the upswing.

Re: Covfefe-19 The 10th Part: Might As Well Reject No Shirt, No Shoes While You're At

The point is, do everything you can to minimize your risk and exposure. Assume nothing works, but do it regardless until it's proven otherwise. Carefully follow protocols and guidelines. Don't take unnecessary risks.

This is a perfect summation.

Meanwhile, a third of the people in my grocery store today had no masks and they were letting their brats screw around and run up against other people.

Conservatives: "Private businesses should be able to deny anyone service because reasons."

Private business: "Wear a mask or we won't serve you."

Conservatives: "NOT LIKE THAT! I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD APPLY TO ME!"

This is a perfect summation.

Meanwhile, a third of the people in my grocery store today had no masks and they were letting their brats screw around and run up against other people.

I went to the grocery store yesterday and every single person there had a mask on and was shopping by themselves.

Re: Covfefe-19 The 10th Part: Might As Well Reject No Shirt, No Shoes While You're At

That would mean they are effective. And are helpful.

Right now, the people not willing to distance from each other are not going to wear masks anyway, as it's somehow a suppression of their rights. On the other hand, the people willing to keep their distance, masks are helpful and effective in preventing the spread of the virus.

So for people like hovey, don't wear a mask. For me, I'll wear a mask. And to go back to work wearing a mask and keeping distance- the plans are to do that for the foreseeable future. I don't want to get it nor spread it.

Right but originally he wasnt saying they "werent effective" he was saying people need to not have a false sense of security just because they wear them. They decrease your chances but they dont make them zero. People as a whole dont think that way though they figure as long as they take minimal precautions they are fine which is not the case.

I cant speak to if he was saying that this time, but all of us around here agreed with that sentiment then and I still do now. I also wear the mask because I dont care if it only helps 1% that is 1% I plan to have on my side.

Of course it doesnt matter anymore. I was out kayaking today and at the lake there was tons of people (it was a gorgeous day) and not one was wearing a mask (except me and the workers) and there was no social distancing at all. If one person was there that had it there would be dozens of cases easy. I get that outside things are different, but jesus christ people it isnt that hard to stay a reasonable distance from others. You arent on the French Riviera here you at a lake in friggin Minneapolis.

Well we are a Blue State.

The sad thing is our cases arent going down but people here are acting like the worst is over. They also seem to think that we are adding 600-700 cases a day only in senior facilities and meat packing places...dont know how that number adds up.

Minnesota has a good liberal tradition and has done a lot of things right in recent years. But simply calling it a "blue state" is a little misleading. Wisconsin has been awful in recent years, with the exception of Baldwin and, to some extent, Kohl. Still, Wisconsin was extremely close in '16, with HRC losing by a margin of only .7%. Minnesota was also very close, with HRC winning by a margin of only 1.5%. Of all the states that went blue, only NH had a smaller margin. No real point here, Handy, except to note that the difference between being blue and red can be very tenuous, something I hope drives us all this fall.

Re: Covfefe-19 The 10th Part: Might As Well Reject No Shirt, No Shoes While You're At

I think you're right.

There are a million variables with COVID. How much viral exposure have you had? That's a function of how much time you've spent in a room with the virus, how protected you are, etc.. Which are functions of how many people are infected, how much they're using source control, how much social distancing is enforced, etc.

Completely agree. I stopped multiquoting when I realized I could check off everything you are writing. Great posts. When I am disgusted with the morans around where I live it is nice to see posts that are even handed, thoughtful and give references.

I went to the grocery store yesterday and every single person there had a mask on and was shopping by themselves.
Not around me. I live in a pocket of knuckleheads. One of my friends is working in tracking. Our town is [paraphrasing with less profanity] full of idiots. My kid is getting called a Nazi for wearing a mask at work, even tho it is required by both the State and his workplace. Some of his co-workers think it is all a hoax even tho one of his other coworkers lost a parent. I need to come live where you live

Re: Covfefe-19 The 10th Part: Might As Well Reject No Shirt, No Shoes While You're At

They did at first but as it wore on it got way worse. hell Minnesota was one of the better states and by the end even we ranked low when they looked at the data. (I believe we ranked a D)

People are stupid.

Serious question here...they used cell phone tracking data, right? So, say I was on the road for work, and another car was keeping pace with me in the next lane? Would that be registered under "social distancing?" It is farther away than 6 feet, but not by much...

Or, just passing along a fellow walker on a trail? Was that the exact moment that they captured that data? Falling from an A to a D that quickly raises some question, IMO. It's not like we opened up like WI, where there is multiple instances of people standing shoulder to shoulder in public places...

No, it shouldn't trigger a false positive exposure for those moments. I started typing a long explanation from what I read about the contact tracing app, but then came to my senses and will just quote the important parts.

https://www.engadget.com/apple-google-covid-19-contact-tracing-api-170057362.html
As previously reported, PHAs that use the API must agree to only use the tech for COVID-19 contact tracing. Users must consent before the app uses the API and before they share a positive test result. Users can also turn exposure notifications on and off. Apps cannot request access to location data, and they are not permitted to use user data for things like targeted advertising.

The API will allow PHAs to define what constitutes an exposure event and determine transmission risk factors. For instance, a PHA may decide to send exposure notifications if you were exposed for several minutes (say, on public transit) but not if you were exposed for a few seconds (passing someone on the sidewalk).

Despite safeguards put in place to protect user privacy -- all metadata associated with Bluetooth will be encrypted

From PCMag:
https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/heres-how-contact-tracing-will-work-on-iphones-and-android-phones
Once you opt in, your phone will "regularly send out a beacon via Bluetooth that includes a random Bluetooth identifier — basically, a string of random numbers that aren’t tied to a user's identity and change every 10-20 minutes for additional protection," according to an FAQ. "Other phones will be listening for these beacons and broadcasting theirs as well. When each phone receives another beacon, it will record and securely store that beacon on the device."
If you later come down with COVID-19, open the health app on your phone and log a diagnosis. The phone then uploads the last two weeks' worth of beacon data, and asks for your permission to anonymously share your results and notify others.

Your phone will periodically download beacons from those who have tested positive for COVID-19. If a beacon uploaded by the sick person matches a beacon saved to your phone, you'll receive an alert. It won't identify the person who contracted COVID-19, but will show an estimate of when you were in contact with them and for how long. What you do next will depend on your local health authorities.
The apps don't record location data; "random Bluetooth identifiers rotate every 10-20 minutes, to help prevent tracking," the FAQ says.

Apple and Google will also not have access to identifying information, and "there will be restrictions on the data that apps can collect when using the API, including not being able to request access to location services, and restrictions on how data can be used," the companies say. "There will be no monetization from this project by Apple or Google."

Google and Apple have also pledged to "disable the exposure notification system on a regional basis when it is no longer needed."

Thank you, aparch!

I was really wondering about that.

Of course (puts on tinfoil hat) are they telling the truth???

I will assume they are, and also wear the Dunce Cap if proven wrong. ;)
