But Chicago has a ton of mass transit, and I think the second case in the country was in Chicago, way back in January, and started spreading from her to people she contacted. NYC didn't see it's first case until March 1, iirc.

Yeah, but wasn't Chicago a repatriated and quarantined person? THis wasn't person-to-person yet. THe first several cases in any community are likely to be imported. It's how and when the first P2P transmission occurs.

So maybe you're right, about the super spreaders. But I don't think they're any more virulent. More likely, they're asymptomatic at peak viral load. Probably some Gen Z dip****

We're still only testing people that are showing obvious signs of being positive at this point however. That isn't a super comprehensive number. The obvious cases are obvious, but it's the unseen cases that are going to do the damage and we aren't seeking those out right now. It's going to be an artificially high rate for "positive" tests (say 800 of 1000 people tested have this just to have an example number). That is significantly higher than the number of people that actually have it in the general population. That's reality right now, isn't it?

Which is odd because Minnesota is coming up very short in positive % (positivity?) We shouldn't be testing the obvious cases, we should be testing the non-obvious cases and getting people to quarantine early. If someone is showing all the signs, test them for flu. If it's not flu, assume it's COVID.

Test the people who are young and mobile. Make sure they understand they're going to kill someone if they don't quarantine for two to three weeks. Make sure they understand we're going to go after them criminally if they don't quarantine.

Yeah, I think the person who had it first in Chicago was someone who had come back from a foreign country, maybe even China. I don't recall. But for some reason I also thought we saw the first case of community transmission in Chicago back a month or more ago, but I might be wrong about that. I would have really expected some places like LA, Chicago, Houston, etc..., to be having similar problems that NYC is experiencing, given large populations in each of those locations. But I don't think we're really seeing it on the same level yet, although maybe in the future.

Ideally if someone is sick they would be hospitalized, or isolated. But I get why they are telling those with mild symptoms to self-isolate at home. There just aren't the hospital beds available to house someone who is exhibiting mild symptoms. I assume that those who are staying home are doing what they can to protect other family members in the same household, but really what can they do? I think the important point is if you're living with someone who is sick, you should self-isolate with that family member as well, even if you have no symptoms. That's the message to get out.

Maybe but it’s not ideal. South Korea has been quarantining moderate symptom people and making them recover and test negative before going home. Moderate symptom people here likely are at home with others and self-quarantine in a house with others is challenging.

That's what my point was. There seems to be a subset that are carrying and have no clue about it. We aren't seeking those cases out. We're waiting for them to come forward.

my company is launching a Covid-19 testing lab at our Connecticut facility to provide additional testing capacity to Connecticut (and eventually Maine), to being accepting samples next week. Once they have enough capacity, employees can also be tested without meeting current CDC guidelines (minor symptoms or to screen for asymptomatic carrier status). The test will search for a specific RNA signature unique to SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus that causes the Covid-19 infection.

Yes. The first (and second) confirmed cases in Illinois (and Chicago) were on January 30th.

A woman in her 60s who became the second patient in the U.S. to be diagnosed with Wuhan coronavirus after returning from a trip to China likely transmitted the respiratory illness to her husband in the United States, health officials said. The international outbreak has been declared a "public health emergency" by the World Health Organization — only the sixth time the WHO has declared such an emergency.

The CDC on Thursday said the woman, who is being treated at AMITA Health St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, and her husband are believed to be the first human-to-human cases of the new coronavirus in the country.

The woman reportedly traveled to China in December, returning to Chicago on Jan. 13. Her husband, who is also in his 60s, did not travel to China but was in close contact with his wife after her return. He is the second confirmed coronavirus case in Illinois and the sixth in the U.S.

We were at four confirmed cases for the state of Illinois as of March 2nd. There were about 300 that were being monitored state wide for Coronavirus symptoms at that point.

Today (or more accurately as of Yesterday) we're at 288 confirmed cases state wide.
