Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

Yikes.

“ JUST IN: A shocking 200 hospital workers and patients at a children’s hospital in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin are being tested for the novel coronavirus after a doctor there recently tested positive. The tests are reportedly rapidly being administered as hospital officials seek to stop the viral illness from spreading through the hospital and community.”

This scenario has been one of the biggest fears of the healthcare system trying to fight this.

I'm gonna die without ever having put my American flag back up. Took it down during Hurricane Katrina. Almost put it back up after Obama was elected but still couldn't find enough reason to be proud of my country. Now, we are a laughingstock. We are literally used as a model for what other countries should not do when it comes to any number of important things, like healthcare. Fvck all the people in this country who are worried about who you sleep with, who you worship or whether or not you can buy your weapons and ammunition. Because you have destroyed us.

San Miguel County CO (includes Telluride) is under shelter in place order through April 3rd.
https://www.9news.com/article/news/...order/73-c4f4b992-55af-4b1b-a963-fffad2fc1362

"In recent days, our county has seen several critically ill residents requiring intensive hospitalization. In the last 48 hours there have been multiple cases in children under 4 years of age in regional Emergency Departments with serious symptoms concerning for COVID-19,"

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

On a car board I am a member of- one of them works for a company that makes testing kits- they have been FDA approved, and will ship 150,000 kits this week, and will go full production right now.

So now we can really figure out how this is progressing, and how we can deal with it. Or at least really start that procedure. It will be nice when we can from testing the most critically sick to anyone with symptoms.

edit- 1,000,000 tests a week.

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

paper in Nature from 2016

"A SARS-like cluster of circulating bat coronaviruses shows potential for human emergence"

https://www.nature.com/articles/nm.3985

scientist were aware of a bunch of Coronoaviruses circulating in bats that had potential for infecting humans.
NPR was covering this the whole time. I remember listening to researchers being interviewed about it a number of times over the yrs. Have always been fascinated about stuff like this. If I could be on the Space station looking down things would be better!

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Sen. John Cornyn: "China is to blame because the culture where people eat bats & snakes & dogs & things like that, these viruses are transmitted from the animal to the people and that's why China has been the source of a lot of these viruses like SARS, like MERS, the Swine Flu." <a href="https://t.co/N4TIlGFqAL">pic.twitter.com/N4TIlGFqAL</a></p>— The Hill (@thehill) <a href="https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1240364608390606850?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 18, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

ESADIAF John!
THere is no medication for stupid or ignorant. Too bad. Maybe that is more pressing than a vaccine

Heard something in the last few days about how the Koreans have a system in place after the SARS epidemic and had rapid response. We had a doofus who said we have everything under control. It is only one case and it will go away.

Listened to the Presser today. Not much commentary on here or the PO(S)Tus thread. Sad that he is so bad people get fatigued from reacting. SOmeone made a pertinent comment on FB- he may have been truthful about some things but he is saying enough that is easily identified as false that one has to fact check everything.

WHO came out with statement for no Ibuprofen and Fauci came out and said he doesn't agree almost immediately.

This is one of the bad things coming out of this situation. In most cases, short of a small audience, when medical people postulate something it is identified as possible but not a given. Now everything that is postulated as possible is immediately reported as fact. Then, when more data comes out and they change their hypothesis accordingly, everything gets labeled as false because they weren't correct about the first thing said.

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

Just a heads up, when **** really hits the fan you might end up getting medical treatment from a veterinarian

I read an article that said not only is there a concern about the number of ventilators but also respiratory therapists. There had been a study looking how quickly they could train people with medical training how to operate a ventilator. They tried physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and veterinarians. After a two day 16 hour crash course the veterinarians scored the best on average.

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

Over 9200 cases now...

The spike is mainly because people are actually able to get tested. The cases are rising, no doubt. However, the severe spike (IMO) is due to the tests. Many of those testing positive probably had it yesterday, or a week ago, etc. Once widespread testing is in full force, I doubt you'll see such a drastic spike.

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

I think you will still see huge spikes. Plenty of morons not isolating

Too little, too late. It's making its rounds. This is from my local neighborhood Facebook group in Aurora, IL. (This is NOT me)

I was hearing today that some in the medical field don't believe in the flattened curve as a "one-off." It will be like a roller coaster. Smaller "spikes" but also multiple ones as these shutdowns come and go (which they think they will). However, each new shutdown will be less restrictive, since once you get it, your body may be a little more immune to it. So, less infected, more freedom to move about.

Think of it as a chicken pox party. Get it over with, now we're good, and each cycle of shutdowns has less people at risk. Something to that effect.

Of course, this is still speculation, but at least it comes from verified scientists and such.

Source, and the article is apparently on the site: KFAN, Dan Barreiro Show.

I have been feeling kind of colicky...

Can't remember now if I posted the story or not, but Italy is rushing 10000 med school students into service to help meet the demand.

This doesn't surprise me. I have a friend who was working towards being a vet a few years ago and stopped when life interfered. With the nursing shortage in my hometown last year, she took the nursing exam, and scored higher than those in nursing programs.
