Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

China certainly does bear some responsibility -- the've actually encouraged wild animal trade and the farming of wild animals. This isn't the first disease that has jumped from wild animals to humans because of this practice.

These "wet markets" should be banned.

I thought they were. At least temporarily.

should have been permanent after SARS (from civet cat)

anyway it's dumb to call it the "Chinese virus", especially for the President of the United States to do so

Just saw that there was an earthquake (an EARTHQUAKE!!!) in Salt Lake City! Holy cow. I've actually been thinking about this summer and hurricane season. We've clearly angered Mother Nature.

That may have been an act of god given the location. Instead of nature.

We need to all pray to our Lord and Savior Greta Thunberg and promise to take global warming and environmental concerns seriously.

there is a major fault line that runs along the Wasatch Front. Quite a few years ago I read there are multiple hospitals and schools basically built right over it, and it was overdue for a major quake. and at least at the time they did not have the kinds of earthquake safety building requirements that you see in California.

I heard they are starting to crack down on this practice.

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

While Sniffles fiddles, Maine leads. Last night the Legislature passed a broad bipartisan plan to help the people impacted by this disaster.

It includes:
Immediate unemployment benefits.
Expanded MaineCare and SNAP benefits.
The ability to get up to $15,000 in no interest loans from the bank or credit union. The banks agreed to this.
Employers have the ability to pay health insurance benefits to laid off employees and it won't impact unemployment benefits (this is left up to the business, not all will be able to do this)
Businesses will have access to up to $2 million in no interest loans to help meet expenses during this crisis.
The legislature also gave the governor the authority to extend or expand these programs as needed.
Most Maine towns are legally run by town meeting. In light of the current crisis such a meeting would be impractical and dangerous, so towns will have the authority to forgo meetings and use the previous year's budget. However, the law does not forbid towns from holding meetings (though I expect the governor will announce that today)

Remember now Jared Went To Facebook (He went to Facebook!)?

Yeah, it’s way more nefarious. At least on the surface.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/poli...ating-coronavirus-testing-website/ar-BB11kwPT

Get past the headline and first paragraphs and you'll be upset and wanting to start polishing that guillotine blade.

I'm not certain that was a wise investment by little Jared. A website to tell people where Covid-19 tests are being performed? I can tell you that. At a hospital.

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

Permanently banning buybacks isn't probably going to fly. That seems unworkable.

Otherwise, I like it.

Share repurchases and dividends actually benefit everyone who has a 401k by supporting share prices and providing a relatively conservative income stream for retirees. A fundamental lack of understanding of economics is why Warren would have been a terrible President.

How many people have a 401k? Not many relatively speaking.

What you said was essentially a lie. It's clever though. Because it's not wrong on the surface, they do benefit 401(k)s and shareholders. Why it's so deceiving is that 80%+ of the market value is owned by the top 10%. The top 10% don't drive the economy. The people working do. They live paycheck to paycheck and can't afford to have 401(k)s or own stock.

So, sorry if you f-cked up by not stockpiling a war chest for bad times, you don't get to tell your employees they should have planned ahead and not suffer any consequences yourself.

Second, those are NOT relatively conservative income streams for retirees. Those are called stable value funds, money markets, bonds, etc. Stocks and even index funds are far too volatile and risky for retirees who need income.
