Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

Ok, so Germany doesn't make sense in any of this. One of the highest infection rates but their death toll is only a quarter of the US. 2x the cases of South Korea, but half the deaths. Are they just not reporting?

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

The only good news I heard this morning is that 80% (that's the number used) that get the virus will recover at home without dying or needing to be hospitalized. That's as optimistic as this gets at this point.

That's been the case since the beginning...

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

BTW, on the whole "PANIC" idea...

While there have been people buying a ton of stuff all at once (some of which we've been instructed to by our government via ready.gov), the actual panic that would lead to people being total a-holes and devolving into chaos hasn't happened. We have seen the opposite, though- random people helping others who need it.

On the other hand, the people so concerned by the economic fallout- they have been panicking all along- accusing others of being reactionary and panic buying of stuff, etc. And now panicking and asking for a drop dead date when this will be over. Along with panic accusations of being some kind of conspiracy.

Interesting how that seems.

It's always nice to see there are people out there with more faith in their fellow Americans than I have. My view is we're a week, maybe a week and a half into most people beginning to accept the seriousness of this, and barely a week into the notion of lockdowns and persistently empty shelves in the grocery stores. I am curious as to where we will be when this is still going on when April starts. Or ends. I haven't been able to buy toilet paper in a week in my town, or in the bigger town in my county. Which means there are idiots out there with a hundred rolls who are rushing right back in to buy a hundred more when the shelves get re-stocked (which these stores claim is happening, but then what does the pimply faced 15 year old stock boy really know?)

I suppose if anything good comes out of this it will be an awakening of how messed up healthcare is in this country, because even with responsible action from a government that should have been led by someone other than trump (and the use of the word "led" is of course relative because what he is doing is not leading) we would still likely be struggling in some places to effectively deal with a pandemic.

A seed I want to see planted and grow is for the notion to be pushed to all good citizens that the behavior of republicans truly has been treasonous. So many of them have violated their oath to protect our country and constitution and instead have put themselves and their re-elections in front of all that is good and helpful. At the very least they deserve to be voted onto the ash heap of history. Some deserve to put against a wall and shot.

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

If I had a dollar for every time a friend of mine has gotten up on a rotted pine soap box in the last couple weeks and said, "I have a feeling that..." followed by a weird cloud of wishful thinking, denial, and pretend expertise on epidemiology...
I'd have a pocket full of dollars.

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

Some were asking the percentage positive of testing at this point. For the Cleveland hospitals, we are at about 4-5% of people tested are positive. Although we are probably ahead of the game with our testing set up, there is still a huge shortage of tests (people who in my opinion should be tested are being screened away). Thus, the numbers must be taken with a grain of salt and I do not think can be extrapolated to Ohio's population at this time.

I also have not been able to track down the sensitivity or specificity of testing, which is probably the result that it needs to be compared to a "gold standard" which is challenging with new testing. We are really not sure what the window of testing should be regarding symptoms or the course of the illness at this point.

Also all employees have taken a survey asking us what we can do if needed. Scary times.

Someone mentioned about vets scoring higher with ventilators than other caregivers. This should be expected as they are often required to manage anesthesia/intubation/ventilation during surgery (pets do not warrant a vet anesthetist unless you want to double the bill).

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

What a week. In the last 72 hours I've been asked to drop everything else, and help turn out a COVID-19 employee reporting feature for my client using our software. We're going live with it tonight.

“ A Virginia police department is investigating reports that teenagers filmed themselves coughing on produce at a local grocery store and uploaded videos on social media during the coronavirus pandemic.”

Are we still testing only people with obvious signs? I need more explanation on why we are testing people who are obviously ill. Just assume symptoms are COVID-19. Does it make more sense to test those around people who are obviously ill to help see how prevalent the transmission is?

Re: Covfefe-19: Do What Now?

MN cases spike up to 115, even with less testing due to supply. Governors Walz's presser at 2:00 will be announcing a shelter in place order, I assume.
