Re: Cornell @ RPI, Saturday, 2/4/17

Great game last night, I posted my thoughts on last nights thread.
Ralph, you are on a roll, keep it going.
The team was fun to watch last night. Lets just keep it going.

Re: Cornell @ RPI, Saturday, 2/4/17

I hope so, but Cornell is better than Colgate

Cornell is a better team, but they are not great. If we play the same game we played last night, we can beat them.
Play with speed and intensity and keep the shots to the outside. Let Perry see them and he will stop them.
Offense is finally starting to find the net. I don't think that we have yet seen how good we can be.

Re: Cornell @ RPI, Saturday, 2/4/17

The Cornell-Union game last night was televised on MASN, the sports cable network that serves Baltimore and Washington, so I got to see a good bit of the second and third periods.

I didn't see the first period, when apparently Cornell came out flying and took a 3-1 lead, outshooting Union 20-7.

Cornell took seven penalties over the second period and the first part of the third, resulting in two power play goals that let Union tie the score.

Then Cornell got a late power play. They put on good pressure in the Union zone and it wound up with the Cornell captain, Weidner, having the puck along the goal line, about 20 feet to the side of the net. The Union goalie (who was not their first-stringer) seemed to be anticipating a pass out front and didn't hug the post as tightly as he might have. Weidner fired the puck at him and it squeezed through for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Less than a minute later, a Cornell player got a half-step on a Union defenseman and came in on the goal. Looked like the Union goalie went down a little sooner than he should have, and he was beaten top shelf, making the final score 5-3.

I have confidence that Chase Perry is capable of playing better than the Union goalie did last night. Whether that will be enough to beat a Cornell squad that has reason to feel confident that they are capable of both dominating a game early and finding a way to win late if it's close - that's another question.
