Cornell Big Red 2012-2013

Re: Cornell Big Red 2012-2013

"Meet the Freshmen" - #18 Jess Brown

by Cornell University Women's Hockey

Name: Jessica Nicole Brown or my newly established nicknames: Brownie, JBeebs, Beebs, or according to the one and only Jill Saulnier. BeeberFever

Hometown: I'm from Wellington, OH, but only the 4,806 people who live there know where it is. So I tell everyone I'm from Cleveland.

Position: I always wanted to be a goalie, but I'm 90% sure I got recruited to be a forward. The 10% of “unsureness” comes from our famous Cornell prelims, they're notorious for making you feel unsure about things.

Major/College: Communications in CALS. But I’m thinking about changing my major to Marine Bio with a minor in Photography

1. What number will you be wearing this season, and why?

I'll be wearing 18. When I was younger I wanted to be 16 and I think I just ended up with the wrong number and I've just always been 18.

2. What’s your favorite hockey memory to date and why?

When I was 12 I was in a penalty box and a GUY from the other team was in his penalty box and he walked through the scorer's box and into my penalty box to fight me… I obviously won… but he upper-cut me and I had a large bruise on my chin. Just a little battle wound though.

3. What’s your favorite aspect of Cornell so far?

I guess I never really realized how much I like fall until I came here, its gorges.

4. What’s been the biggest adjustment to life at Cornell so far?

I miss seeing my family everyday… Also... When I was home I had cats that were rather… promiscuous… I guess you could call it. And they would have litters of kittens and I would raise them and find homes for them, so I miss that.

5. Do you have any pre-game rituals?

Nope

6. How are you enjoying the long walk from north campus to the rink?

I've only done the walk once; well actually it was a run (in jeans, WITH A BACKPACK) because we were running late for something.

As for the bus system… one time Zorn and I were on a bus… (I don't really understand the busses because I usually just drive my car) anyways… we were on a bus. Not sure which one and it was making weird stops and then stopped at north campus, on the intersection of Jessup and Pleasant Grove, but Zorn and I were like my legs hurt from workout and I think this bus swings in the A lot. Unfortunately ... it didn't go in the A lot and proceeded in the direction of Lansing, New York aka up by the mall. So instead of getting off at the first stop we thought it would maybe swing around and come back to north but it didn't. Zorn and I ended up probably 3 miles away from North Campus. We asked the bus driver if he was going back but he wasn't. It took us about an hour to get back (not sure why we didn't call anyone) not to mention it was dark out.

7. Do any of your fellow classmates have any interesting quirks or tendencies?

Murray has a knack for the Gangnam Style dance, and Pouds' French accent makes me giggle, especially when she tries to do a British accent.

8. What has your favorite team bonding activity been so far?

Camping

9. Any other funny stories you’d like to share?

Oooooooh. One time while we were working out I wasn't sure if we were supposed to be going or not (if Coach Howley blew the whistle) so I think I asked Leck… haha. And she said we were so I started going and Coach Howley is like "who would like to actually go on my whistle?!" or something like that and it was just awkward because I couldn't tell if he was mad and I was just staring at him with this dumbfounded look on my face. Ugh

"Meet the Freshmen" - #14 Victoria Pittens

by Cornell University Women's Hockey

Name: Victoria Johanna Pittens

Hometown: Whitby, Ontario

Position: Right Wing

Major/College:
Human Development in Human Ecology, and I hope to concentrate in Behavioural Neuroscience.

1. What number will you be wearing this season, and why?

I will be wearing number 14 this season. When I was growing up I always had a problem picking my number, but then again, when I am ever good at making decisions so I guess it makes sense. I wore number 10 because that is what I liked best, and when I couldn’t get the number I wanted I went with my Mom’s favourite number which was 3. Eventually I got to a point where I knew number 3 wasn’t really for me so I decided to switch it up. After that I went with my Dad’s favourite number which was 14. I could sit here and try to explain how I knew it would always be my number, but I just don’t know how to do that. It felt right, you know? That’s probably the best way to explain it. After that I kept it going and I can’t even explain to you how happy I was that I was able to get it here at Cornell.

2. What’s your favorite hockey memory to date?

I am going to go with winning Nationals with Team Ontario. I can’t deny that I was so nervous meeting the team but once I got there I felt instantly welcomed and I knew that was where I belonged. I made great friends and played great hockey, and the fact that our team won gold put the cherry on top of the cake. In the final game I got a goal and an assist, and it was so uplifting for me because I never thought I could be that successful. I’ve been told all my life that I have to believe in myself, and although sometimes I struggle with that, in that game I had never felt so alive. When the final buzzer sounded the feeling of exhaustion was overpowered by the feeling of pride and satisfaction, and I wish those next fifteen minutes could have lasted a life time. Playing team Ontario for me was a journey of self-discovery, and by far my favourite moment and memory in hockey to date.

3. What’s your favorite aspect of Cornell so far?

My favourite aspect of Cornell would have to be the people. When I think about my life and all the places I could have gone, I cannot picture myself anywhere else. When I came I was nervous about fitting in and finding my place, but with the team it felt like instant friends. They made me feel so welcome and like I belonged, that I found myself very comfortable and happy. I know the campus is absolutely beautiful, and the classes are so interesting and fun, but the people I met are what made Cornell feel like home.

4. What’s been the biggest adjustment to life at Cornell so far?

The biggest adjustment for me is these crazy early mornings. At home I would consider an 8am wake-up call early and a 7am wake-up call just insane. Here a late morning is 7:30am and an early morning is 5:10am. I am NOT A MORNING PERSON. I can’t comprehend how people adjust to this haha.

5. Do you have any pre-game rituals?

Well I don’t necessarily have a pregame ritual, but I do have a penny taped to my right skate. There is a meaning behind it in my family and I find everyone could use a little luck now and then.

6. How are you enjoying the walk from north campus to the rink?

Originally, I did not walk or take the bus; my roommate Morgan Richardson and teammate Cassandra Poudrier used to bike everywhere. Most people hate the fact that Cornell is so hilly when you have to bike, but I looked at it as I was either doing a work out up the hills, or having a blast on the way down them. That being said, sometimes my bike rides were not so enjoyable. I said that I would ride my bike with my two teammates, but that is a little bit of a lie. Don’t get me wrong we always started together, but by the end of it they would be at least one street ahead of me. Why? They tend to get very competitive with each other, so it was always a race to see who could lead. I didn’t take my time, but I definitely was not about to jump up into the running. My rides were supposed to be a way of transportation, not a race. Eventually we got tired of it and figured out the bus system. Looking back on it now I am getting mad at myself for not figuring it out sooner. The bus systems are so convenient, I love it.

7. Do any of your fellow classmates have any interesting quirks?

Our team is full of interesting characters that’s for sure. Kelly Murray has an unhealthy obsession with strawberries. I don’t think I have seen anyone get so excited about anything before. Emily Fulton likes to sit in a seat that allows her to see the whole room and everything in it. I don’t think she would be able to sit comfortably and enjoy herself if she sat anywhere else.

8. What has your favorite team bonding activity been so far?

I really liked our team camping trip. That was the weekend when I really got to know each and every teammate individually, and I would consider it the time when the whole team came together.

9. Any other funny stories you’d like to share?

There have been a lot of funny moments and things have happened so far. Regarding workouts, I have finally come to realize that with Coach Howley, “I’ve seen worse” is actually a really good compliment.
