Re: Conspiracy Theory Du Jour

Something is going on. TBH I haven't been in years and I used to enjoy it.

They aren't the only casual sit-down chain that is in trouble. A lot of Millennials have stopped going to places like Olive Garden, Red Lobster, TGI McFunsters (as Bourdain would say), etc. because of the "organic/sustainable/paleo/gluten-free/farm-to-table/authentic/eat & shop local" movements that have swept my generation. I don't view it as the worst thing in the world, TBH.

Is that really a large percentage, though? I always assumed it was another affluenza strain and that the Great Unwashed 90% will be swilling Bud Lite and eating Big Macs until the end of time.

In Dixie (or the Plains - same difference), probably. Not in cities with white collar jobs though.

I know I've read at least a few articles in the past couple of years about this generational trend, and the big chains being concerned about the metrics of it.

The problem is the price of a beer and burger at TGI Applebee's. Why go to them? McDonald's is cheaper, and other places are better for the same price point.

I think that is the biggest one. I could not care less about any of those diet trends, and still eat more than a fair share of fast food, but couldn't tell you the last time I ate at a sit-down chain restaurant. Part of it is the Food Network-ification(Bourdain if your brain is wired one way, Captain Flavortown if it's the other) of dining hyping up "authentic" experiences.

The other part is technological. The big thing chains had going for them was being easy to find(prime location, big signs) and delivering a standard of consistency. Smart phones largely take the gamble out of stand-alone restaurants. Last week, I was on a road trip and going to have lunch in a town I had never stopped in before. Maybe a decade ago I would have played it stuff and stuck with a chain I knew was decent, but fifteen miles out of town, I literally just shouted "Best restaurants in ___" into my phone, got a bunch of reviews for different places, got to compare menus, got directions to a place that looked interesting, and ended up with a much better meal than I would have had at a typical chain.

Also semi-related, but speaking of fast-casual employment, the Washington Post pointed out in an article last March that the entirety of Trump's beloved coal industry employs fewer people than Arby's.

This is it exactly. God help me, but I trust Yelp.

Eating on the road is golf: limit the damage of your worst shot. Before smartphones the way to do that was the chains. Now you can risk going to mom and pop.

Yep, I agree with this. Also, I want to choke Spiky-Hair Vince Neil every time he's on screen, but I can't deny what he does for the ma & pa restaurants in this country that are just trying to be 'upscale' or 'different' with standard American diner food.

But why does my farm to table dry white toast cost $12?

Re: Conspiracy Theory Du Jour

The real Slim Shady?

Maybe you've heard about Eminem dying back in 2005 in a car crash, and maybe you've heard the rumors about the new Eminem being a clone of the old real one. Even if you were never a fan of Eminem, this story is sure to be of interest if you are a truth seeker. In my opinion, after researching this even a little, it's obvious that he did die in 2005 and the Eminem that has been in the public after has been a clone.
