Because the elitists decide that it's politically correct to pander to another "group" so they can solidify votes for another voting bloc?
"Young Turks"
"Fighting Irish?"
As yes, political correctness, otherwise known as "bothering to consider how <b>groups large enough to have voting influence</b> might respond to what you say before you say it."?

Which sports team is named the Young Turks?
What part of the Americas are this "Irish" tribe native to?

Log off.
A metaphor used frequently in sports to describe young, brash, up and coming teams...
Oh...so political correctness only applies to this hemisphere according to your "standard?"
What part of the Americas are this "Irish" tribe native to?
It's not my standard, it's the NCAA's, which is how North Dakota ended up where they are today.
The Irish are stereotyped as fighters and drunks, and were heavily prejudiced against in the early 1900s in America. "No Irish Need Apply," etc.
Not only that, but countless other ethnic groups have been as well - Italians, French, Vietnamese, Chinese, Jews, Armenians...I could go on an on. Somehow they all survived and became successful. I wonder why? Maybe it's because they didn't use the persecution as an excuse, but rather overcame it. In fact, that's the reason almost EVERYONE came to this country...to fight the tyranny, repression and overbearing governments that formerly enslaved them...to find FREEDOM and the right to pursue their way of life as they saw fit. Not to be lectured to by elitists who want to control everyone and corral them into the way of life and behavior that THEY desire.
<i>"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me."</i>
You will NEVER shut me up. You will have to kill me (which, don't worry, will happen...plans are already underway to reduce world population to 500 million...what the elitists feel is "sustainable"...the joke is that they all think THEY will be spared, when in reality NONE of them will...only the very people that they are voting for now...)
Hahaha somebody needs a Xanax... The fact is the NCAA allowed teams to keep their names if they could get the Tribes' ok. UND couldn't. I don't think the name was that big a deal, but this rule has been around for a while now. I'd just like to see UND move on like all the other schools (Miami, QU, UML) have. Its a not about political correctness for me. You can argue all day long. I'm just asking if this win will help the UND community move on. Because after a point, it does start to look a little childish. None of the other schools which have had to change names have crumbled into oblivion. Life goes on.

Why is it "salty and stubborn?" Because the elitists decide that it's politically correct to pander to another "group" so they can solidify votes for another voting bloc? How come it's ok to say "Young Turks" or "Fighting Irish?"
http://i.imgur.com/gFD5o.png?fbI'm not a North Dakota fan, but if I want to call them "Sioux" I'll do whatever I dam* please and neither you nor anyone else will be able to prevent it.
Keep in mind that the university announced the new name during this season. It hasn't even been five whole months yet.
I think it'll take longer than it has for other schools' fan bases/alums to adjust because hoo boy are North Dakota fans being salty and stubborn about it, but eventually people will stop giving a crap and move on with their lives.
Also I think once they actually have a new jersey that doesn't just say "North Dakota" on it, and they get some logos and other visual identity, that'll make stuff happen quicker - especially with incoming students. I actually think announcing it the way they did in the middle of the hockey season with nothing to actually roll out may have made the transition that much harder.
I can guarantee you that there will never be a NoDak hockey uni with a fighting hawk on it.
