Congrats '12-'13 National Champions Undefeated Minnesota Gophers

Re: Congrats '12-'13 National Champions Undefeated Minnesota Gophers

An undeniably amazing year. Hard for me to dislike much about GWH this season. Amazing. Earned. Deserved.

Thanks for keeping the WCHA the champion league for another year.

BRANDT'S BANK SHOT

Re: Congrats '12-'13 National Champions Undefeated Minnesota Gophers

a 49-0-0 season, even in a cbb forum deserves some respect, so with only one post, I need not miss a single record.

Minnesota did have a fantastic season, but you are off a bit on the season record. Season Record and current streak are two different things.

Re: Congrats '12-'13 National Champions Undefeated Minnesota Gophers

Congratulations to the Gophers on a well-deserved National Championship and undefeated season!! It was very enjoyable watching these young ladies play this year and accomplish all the things they accomplished (individually and as a team). Let's do it again next year. :)

BRANDT'S BANK SHOT

Now that was a Gretzky Like goals scorers goal. I'm sure that if Brandt makes the Olympic squad, that one will be shown on NBC a few times over. Never seen Brandt play before. I was Very Impressed.

I can just see the headlines next year.....Brandt on Fire. :D ( In my native language, Brandt = Burning Fire )

Re: Congrats '12-'13 National Champions Undefeated Minnesota Gophers

DC may take a little while getting back to you... she was last seen putting a few back at the Gopher post-game party.

Be interesting to flash back 30 years from now to see if one of the current Gophers will go on to have DC longevity type Hockey Playing Career.

Re: Congrats '12-'13 National Champions Undefeated Minnesota Gophers

Except of course the perfect (undefeated) season - that record can never be broken, only tied! :)

I'll be the first to admit that this record will most likely last a lifetime, but would a 42-0-0 down the road not be better than 41-0-0 ?.

The more interesting thing to see is how long the actual streak will last. That is why I posed the DC question yesterday, because my guess is that the longest streak other than the current Minny one belongs to the UNH teams of the late 70's and early 80's. Hopefully someone will be able to look that one up.

Decided to do some research. With DC "apparently" in limbo, went to the trusty UNH media guide.

http://issuu.com/unhathletics/docs/wih_2012-13_final_guide

And this is what I found:

1 - UNH has the most wins all time in Women's D1 hockey, 711 wins, followed by Providence with 645.
.......The other programs in the top five are Dartmouth, North Eastern and Brown.
2 - UNH is fourth in All time winning percentage with .750. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Mercyhurst are the top three in that order.
3 - UNH was dominating in the late 70's early 80's, with TWO undefeated seasons in a ROW.

Here are those seasons:

77-78 15-0-0
78-79 16-0-1 (The tie was the second game of the season)
79-80 20-0-0
80-81 21-0-0
81-82 18-1-1 (The loss was the second game of the season)

Two major streaks in this set of games:

- 74 game undefeated streak 73-0-1
- 56 game winning streak

I don't think there has been another team that comes close to this, other than the current Minnesota winning streak of 49.
(IIRC, Wisconsin had a 32 or 36 game winning streak a few years ago, hopefully a WCHA expert will be able to fill those details).

If the above are indeed the records, Minnesota will need to win the first 8 games out of the gate next year to break that record.

Maybe DC can be on hand for the record breaker, to commemorate the event. :D

Better yet....Schedule the 8th game of the season vs UNH at the Whitt.......

Wisconsin on two separate occasions had 32-game unbeaten streaks (I think it was 32, if it was 31 then sorry, my head is tired.) The longest winning streak in the NCAA era was 21 by Harvard in 2008.

More research via college Stats.

You are correct, 32 is the magic unbeaten streak number for Wisconsin, and they did indeed do it twice......

In 06/07, their last loss was on November 24, 2006 vs. Minnesota. Wisconsin went on a 23-0-3 run to win their first crown in Lake Placid.
They won the first five game the next season, and also recorded a tie to run their unbeaten string to 28-0-4 before losing to St-Cloud on October 19, 2007.

In 10/11, their last loss was on November 28, 2010 vs. Minnesota. Wisconsin went on a 25-0-2 run to win their crown in Erie.
They continued next season with 5 wins, to run their unbeaten string to 30-0-2 before losing to Minnesota on October 16, 2011.

In the 06/07 streak the longest winning streak was 19 games.
In the 10/11 streak the longest winning streak was 17 games.
Both winning streaks spanned the end of one season and the start of the next season.

Re: Congrats '12-'13 National Champions Undefeated Minnesota Gophers

Tough act to repeat, but Never say Never Again. Records are always made to be broken.

Except of course the perfect (undefeated) season - that record can never be broken, only tied! :)

After my research this morning, need to adjust my statement: "Records are always made to be broken" to "This matches some records set by UNH years ago".

Minnesota did record a record with the most wins in a undefeated season at 41-0-0, but they were not the first with a perfect season. That distinction goes to UNH who set the initial record of a "Perfect" season with their 15-0-0 in 77/78. UNH also holds the record of most "Perfect" seasons at three, and had two perfect seasons in a row in 79/80 and 80/81. So there was more than one Miracle on ice in 1980 :D. In addition UNH holds the longest winning streak in at 56 games.

Sure...completely comparable to 41-0-0 in 2012-2013 D-I.

Who all did UNH play during their old winning streaks? I would guess there were many club-level teams on their schedule, probably D3 also and maybe the Little Sisters? Are those wins included? Did the girls wear hockey skates back then? ;)

More interesting than what this team has done? I think they've proven all they could be asked to prove and honestly don't see a big connection between their season and what a completely different team might do in 2013-2014. I understand there will be those watching if the 2013-2014 Gophers win a few of their first games. Just don't see that as terribly significant or closely related to this teams accomplishment.

I'll just savor being witness to something special...maybe do that victory dance mentioned so long ago, document the travels of the Championship Belt which shouldn't take long at all, then start fresh next September.

They played teams like Brown, Cornell, North Eastern, BU, BC and Providence. They dominated in many games winning with double digits. Talking about Digits, DC would have played against Digit in those days.

Sure it was a different era, but that does not diminish the fact they won all these games against the best that the game had to offer at that time. The West had not even discovered the Women's college game. They were late to the party. :D :D

Let's put it this way. Without the trailblazing done by those teams and players, we might not be having this discussion in the first place. !!!!

Not trying to diminish this years accomplishments, already posted previously that it is a fantastic accomplishment. I'll be the first to admit that going undefeated in this era with more parity, more teams and a much deeper talent pool overall, is a much tougher feat to accomplish than when it was done in the early days. This is in general true for most sports as they evolve over time. That is what makes the likes of Tiger Woods so special, to be so dominant in the modern era in his sport.

At any rate the reason for the postings is to go down the list of records in the history books to see how this years perfect record and streak matches up with the test of time. Now that the season is over, a perfect opportunity to compare and for some of us to get more educated on what happened in the longer ago past. If you look at what UNH did, only losing once in five seasons, having a winning streak span across four seasons and an unbeaten streak spanning across five season is truly remarkable. We will probably never see that again. Clearly those teams changed composition every year as well.

I would think that if Minnesota can break that winning streak of 56 games, if would be a truly remarkable accomplishment. Remember that we discussed about what would be good for the game a while back. I think it would be great for the game if Minnesota can break that record, just like it would be good for the game if the NCAA crown comes East sooner rather than later.

The cool kids always arrive later (I was either there early or just stayed home. :o)

It's already remarkable, because nobody has every defeated 49 straight D-I opponents previously, and thus, we are remarking on it. ;)
