computer issues: part infinity

Re: computer issues: part infinity

If you're running Windows 8 or 8.1, then yes - because the UI is horrible for those operating systems. If you're running Windows 7, it's you're call. (Pay attention to Win 7's end-of-life schedule that MS has released, and the Win 10 upgrade is only free until August or September - I forget which now.)

I have a laptop that was on Windows 8.1 and I made the upgrade immediately. I have a desktop PC, too, and made the upgrade a few weeks later because I was impressed with Windows 10. It feels a lot like Windows 7, though not entirely. And it's more customize-able than any Windows OS we've ever seen.

Re: computer issues: part infinity

Well, crap. After almost 5 years with my current laptop and no issues, I had been counting on PowerNotebooks for my next home office upgrade, but I just checked in and it seems they've decided to fold as of a couple weeks ago.

Does anyone know of other "custom" laptop vendors out there who have great customer service and don't break the bank?

Re: computer issues: part infinity

I get multiple offers to update to Windows 10 every day. Is this something I should do?

I updated. Tried it for a day. Never again. Hated it. Not that I am fond of W8, but W10 was terrible. I will admit I am a peculiar person when it comes to technology, and often a person that falls outside the popular opinion, so take that into account.

I kinda wish I had stayed at 7, but 10 is still far superior to 8.

Re: computer issues: part infinity

Thanks for the replies. I'm still on 7, but the wife's laptop is on 8. I might upgrade that one and hang on for a while with mine.

Re: computer issues: part infinity

Appears I'm soon to be in the market for replacing my laptop. Windows guy, so chopping apple options off the block from the get go.

While I currently don't do any PC gaming to speak of, it's something I very well could dive into. Also, I'm leaning towards getting something that will be snappy for anything I want to do (SSD? 16GB ram? Both? More?)

What are you tech savvy people's thoughts on MSI/ASUS/Alienware and the like. Any horror stories? Any better options?

An i5 (at minimum) with an SSD and considerable RAM will give you some zip. 16GB may be overkill, depends on what apps/programs you would be using and how resource intensive they are. RAM is also very very easily expandable and not that expensive so if you find you want more and that is slowing you down (unlikely) then that can be upgraded cheaply.

If gaming is possible you need to consider just how likely it is and whether you want discreet graphics or integrated graphics as that will make a huge difference.

You need to be careful about this as there are some laptops out there that are not user-upgradeable. I just got a new HP Envy and it's sealed like a tomb... can't even replace the battery yourself (not yet anyway).

For general internet-ing, my only laptops have been Asus, and they've served me well. My first one lasted 6 years or so, and that included a TON of streaming the first couple years. As in, 8-10 hour marathons with it hooked up to my TV.

FTR, I've had 3 computers in the last 20 years. 2 were laptops, 1 was a desktop.

Re: computer issues: part infinity

I bought a Chromecast device to use while watching NCHC.tv's feed on my TV. No dice. The video quality took a major hit and the video got really choppy. It was like jumping back 10 or more years in video streaming. It also created a lag of a couple seconds. I could see the video on the PC monitor, and then again on the TV, the difference in picture and steadiness of the stream was night and day. Then when I quit the Chromecast action it got even better. I don't know how much of this was my computer - four years old now - and how much is the Chromecast device.

Re: computer issues: part infinity

A couple of my Excel files have recently locked because they are being edited by another person. The only issue is, that person is me! This is my personal computer, so it's not like it's being shared around a network. All of the troubleshoots I can find are for Windows machines, which is an issue because I have a Mac. I can just duplicate one of the documents, but another issue is that one of the files that are locked is the Personal Macro Workbook.

Re: computer issues: part infinity

Have you tried shutting down your computer and restarting? Something tells me the files aren't being used once the computer powers down. They should then be unlocked when you restart the computer.

That was the first thing I did, no luck. This has actually been a problem for a couple weeks now, I just use Excel sporadically at the moment so it hasn't been an urgent issue.

If you look at the file attributes, are the files marked as read only? If so, there is a way to remove the attribute, but I forget how to do it.

Not sure how it works on a Mac, but typically, even if the file is "locked," you can still open it "read only" and then save it under another name. When you go to save it, somewhere on the "save" dialog box there is a little place called "tools" with a dropdown arrow next to it. Click on that and then "general options" and see what, if anything, is checked off there.

Alternately, check your task manager and see if somehow more than one copy of excel is running at the same time. I have had problems like that from time to time.

I didn't know you worked in IT Support.:p

People mock that reply they give, but it works so much more often than the average user expects. There's a reason it became one of the first replies they give.
