Sure, the goalies are better, and the defenses are better, too.

and, the good players never stay 4 years anymore, either.

Re: College Hockey's All-Time Leading Scorer

The most interesting scorer to me is Phil Latreille, who played for Middlebury in early 60s, and was only allowed to play three years, as freshmen weren't eligible. In those days before the NCAA broke into D-I, D-II and D-III, Middlebury played many teams each season that remain D-I schools today. Oh, and the guy scored nearly 300 points in 3 years and had 80 goals as a senior! If he had an extra year....

Re: College Hockey's All-Time Leading Scorer

Any reason why no one has made the list since the mid nineties?

1. Better coached--and bigger--goalies
2.Better defensive systems
3. Deeper talent pool.

I remember Brendan Morrison playing in a lot of 10-0 and 12-1 games back in the day. It's pretty rare to see a game that lopsided these days.

Re: College Hockey's All-Time Leading Scorer

Goalies are better for two reasons: the light, large equipment they wear now and the large size of many of them. Look at some pictures of the goalies from the 1970s, they all had the leather pads and most were on the smallish size as they were generally thought to be quicker. The didn't cover nearly as much net as the large athletic goalies do today.

Also players did not shot block like they do today. Again, the newer more protective equipment including the full face masks make putting yourself in the line of fire much easier than back in the day.

A bunch of those guys played in the 80s, look at how lackluster the goalies look in the NHL highlights of the 80s and then remember that those were the best in the world lol...Always good to see a Laker on a list like this:)....I didn't realize Paul Polillo had such an illustrious college career at Western, he had an interesting minor league career, I grew up in Port Huron, Michigan in the 90s and the Port Huron minor league team at that time played in a league that changed its name a bunch of times (Colonial Hockey League, United Hockey League, etc.)..Polillo played for a team out of Brantford, Ontario before later coming to Port Huron's team...anyways, he put up 150+ point seasons with regularity in that league throughout the 90s and I always found it somewhat interesting that (from the best of my knowledge) he never really got much of a look in a higher level league, he had average size and from what I remember was a pretty good skater, I could never figure that one out:confused:

parity - zee week sisteurs ave growed up
betteur goalie, biggeur pad - pad use to be to protect de goalie, now dey pour elping de goalie
coaching to much defence - you cant coach a guy to be Paul Kariya, mais you can coach heem to ang back in de nutral zone
et simple fiziks - de playeur getting biggeur et fasteur eveury year mais de rink staying de same size

Re: College Hockey's All-Time Leading Scorer

I wonder who has scored the most goals in a season? Who has had the most total points? Most assists?

Based on what I've read here there could be large discrepancies in number of games played back in the day.

Goals in a season - Mike Donnelly - Michigan State (59 in 1985-1986 season)
Points in a season - Tony Hrkac - North Dakota (116 in 1986-1987 season)
Assists in a season - Wayne Gagne - Western Michigan (76 in 1986-1987 season)
Points per game - Frank Chiarelli - RPI (4.39 in 1951-1952 season)

Mayasich owned the record for a long time. I bet his points per game is still the all time best. IMO, he is the greatest college hockey player of all time.

He's about 10th. He averaged a little less than 2.7/game. There are a handful of guys who have averaged more than 3/game.

Re: College Hockey's All-Time Leading Scorer

How about PC's Ron Wilson. 250 points from 73-77 and 87 pts in 74/75 season..

And he was a dman.....

I doubt any other D were close.

And he did it in 111 games, which is less than 3 years in todays world.

Re: College Hockey's All-Time Leading Scorer

It's a little surprising that there are no BU or BC players on the list, given their program's success. John Cullen ended up with 241 for BU, and I think Dave Emma is in the same range (Did Gionta pass him?). I think Shawn McEachern ended up with 188 after three years, so 54 more as a Senior would have broken Cullen's record (he had 82 as a junior, so even with a big drop, he had a good shot.)

I remember Montogomery's years well. :mad:I also remember Shawn Walsh being pretty livid when Dave Sacco was named All-American over him, despite having about 30 less points.:D

Re: College Hockey's All-Time Leading Scorer

Few things with regards to the NCAA record book... These questions are coming from the newest record book (2010-2011) too....

How can CC own the longest losing streak at 31 games yet they also own the longest winless streak (from the same time frame) and that is 2 games shorter than the longest losing streak?

Theissen owns a career sv% of .922 yet doesn't show up in the NCAA records that go down to .920....

There were some others but i don't wanna keep looking....

So how do we know what of these records is legit? Just wondering....
