They don't mean a lot but the vegas lines intrigue me. Iowa only 3 point favorite over nebraska. Michigan 2.5 over buckeyes.

OSU was -14 vs MSU and Wisconsin was -10.5 vs Northwestern. It's definitely more than just picking who is going to win.

It's also a badly kept secret that anything WI-related...the odds are skewed to start with, since Vegas knows Paint Thinner Nation will ALWAYS bet on their team, no matter what.

Regarding the actual OSU/MSU Game :

Congratulations to Spartanforlife4. You should be very proud of your team. Can't remember the last time an opponent came into Ohio Stadium and simply shut down the Buckeye Offense like that. Without the two Spartan turnovers, that's a 14-0 game. The better team won. Good luck the rest of the way.

As for all of the excitement over Zeke Elliot's remarks:

Not the brightest bulb. Just created a bunch of questions around his dedication and his being a member of a team.
This is a pretty solid quote. When all is said and done, his position in the draft will probably drop some due to his loose lips. Not multiple rounds, but probably enough to cost him real money.

At the same time, many of the fan comments swirling around internet are more than a little over the top. Of course the vultures of the world would like nothing better than to see a rival coach throw one of his players under the bus. My take is a little different.

I'll agree that Elliot's remarks should have stayed in the locker room. Because they didn't they didn't, there should be consequences. But those consequences should play out on the practice field or in the coaches' offices. Or both. Little or nothing is gained by publicly humiliating the player -- especially so late in the season, when there's no time for redemption. Sorry, vultures.

It's also important to note that Elliot didn't suddenly "quit the team." It's been widely believed that Elliot, Joey Bosa and possibly a few others would be turning pro as soon as they were eligible to do so -- meaning after the current season. At least in Columbus, it was openly debated whether these players should be allowed to go through the "Senior Day" ceremonies. In the end that didn't happen, even though there apparently is some precedent for it. But Elliot's "last game in the horseshoe" was hardly the news flash it's being made out to be.

Of course Elliot's timing was out of line. But if people are going to be this offended by remarks made in the immediate aftermath of an intensely disappointing defeat, then maybe it's time to sharply curtail post-game access to the players. Quite honestly 90% of the player quotes are a complete waste of everyone's time anyhow. How many million times do we need to hear that everyone has great teammates, but we all have to keep working hard to get better? It's a total bore. Conversely, when a kid defies convention and speaks his mind, we're all ready to crucify. The whole enterprise just seems inherently flawed.

That's a load of bunk!!! Senior day should be for those guys who have stayed for 4 years and are playing their last regular season home game, plan and simple. If you wanna do something later on, you can invite him back a few years later when he's become a big star in the pros and you can have a bunch of recruits meet with him.

Re: College Football 2015-16: The Big Ten Rises

Offended? Not even close to the correct word. Disdainful, perhaps.
While I obviously disagree with your original post, I intentionally focused on the larger world of sports chat, rather than your specific comment. But since we must...

Could very well be that the word "offended" was an imperfect choice on my part. But you called for a guy to dismissed from the team, for a first offense, a week before the biggest rivalry game of the year. The word "disdainful" is completely mismatched with your position. J.D.'s comment was disdainful. You called for a specific action.

To clarify, my personal position is the decision that Senior Day should be reserved for those who have exhausted their eligibility or have graduated academically. Elliot doesn't meet either standard. For that matter, neither does Bosa. Not including them in Senior Day was the correct call, IMHO. I mentioned the existence of the debate simply to offer a piece of evidence that Elliot's upcoming departure was widely anticipated, not a Saturday night shocker as many insinuate.

Does any disagreement remain? Maybe a little, in the sense that the opposing opinion isn't completely outrageous to me. At least not three exclamation marks outrageous.;) If a player is a lock to be high NFL draft pick, and follows the proper procedures for leaving early, I can understand a fan's desire to say thank you in some fashion. But tossing the early departures into the existing Senior Day ceremony? No.

The game actually opened as a pickem, or with Iowa as a one point favorite, so actually Vegas is looking for Nebraska money right now.

Wouldn't they want people to bet the line in Iowa's favor at a low spread, where more money will come in on Nebraska +3 for example.. As a bettor I obviously want more points if I'm taking Nebraska, and less points if I'm taking Iowa.

Re: College Football 2015-16: The Big Ten Rises

I've been wondering about miles for a few years now. He just hasn't been able to develop quarterbacks for the most part. Seems like they always have great receivers, backs and oline but it's the qb that's lacking. They will attract a big name, offensive guru. Pretty easy to win big at LSU with all that in state talent.

I think ideally Vegas likes it when the opening line ends up being pretty stable, with no swings one way or the other, and about 50% of the money coming in on each side.

If the game opened at say "pickem", and it's now up to Iowa -3, that tells me the early money came in on Iowa, and Vegas, seeing that substantially more money is coming in on Iowa than Nebraska, raises the line to Iowa at -3 to try to attract some money on the Nebraska side of things.

I'm certainly no expert, but a lot of the big bets, or the so called "smart money" comes in right after the lines are set, and before they've had a chance to have the market do any "corrections" to them. The smart money betters have already figured out their own lines, using their own computer algorithms. For example, the smart money could have figured Iowa at -2. When they see it open at pickem, they will make their big bets right away. To lay off some of those bets the Books will then move the line accordingly.

There is a spectacular book on the subject that I highly recommend to anyone who has even a mild interest in sports betting, especially football. It's called The Smart Money by Michael Konik. It's the story of Konik's brief involvement with Billy Walters, generally considered the top sports bettor in history.

I just watched the 60 Minutes interview of Walters. Fascinating.

Syracuse has a coaching opening.

Scott Shafer has been fired as Syracuse's head football coach, the school announced on Monday.

Shafer, who was promoted from defensive coordinator after Doug Marrone's departure in January 2013, is 13-23 in three seasons. The Orange is currently 3-8 this year heading into its season finale against Boston College. Shafer will coach in the final game.
