Re: College Football 2015-16: The Big Ten Rises
Regarding the actual OSU/MSU Game :
Congratulations to Spartanforlife4. You should be very proud of your team. Can't remember the last time an opponent came into Ohio Stadium and simply shut down the Buckeye Offense like that. Without the two Spartan turnovers, that's a 14-0 game. The better team won. Good luck the rest of the way.
As for all of the excitement over Zeke Elliot's remarks:
Not the brightest bulb. Just created a bunch of questions around his dedication and his being a member of a team.
This is a pretty solid quote. When all is said and done, his position in the draft will probably drop some due to his loose lips. Not multiple rounds, but probably enough to cost him real money.
At the same time, many of the fan comments swirling around internet are more than a little over the top. Of course the vultures of the world would like nothing better than to see a rival coach throw one of his players under the bus. My take is a little different.
I'll agree that Elliot's remarks should have stayed in the locker room. Because they didn't they didn't, there should be consequences. But those consequences should play out on the practice field or in the coaches' offices. Or both. Little or nothing is gained by publicly humiliating the player -- especially so late in the season, when there's no time for redemption. Sorry, vultures.
It's also important to note that Elliot didn't suddenly "quit the team." It's been widely believed that Elliot, Joey Bosa and possibly a few others would be turning pro as soon as they were eligible to do so -- meaning after the current season. At least in Columbus, it was openly debated whether these players should be allowed to go through the "Senior Day" ceremonies. In the end that didn't happen, even though there apparently is some precedent for it. But Elliot's "last game in the horseshoe" was hardly the news flash it's being made out to be.
Of course Elliot's timing was out of line. But if people are going to be this offended by remarks made in the immediate aftermath of an intensely disappointing defeat, then maybe it's time to sharply curtail post-game access to the players. Quite honestly 90% of the player quotes are a complete waste of everyone's time anyhow. How many million times do we need to hear that everyone has great teammates, but we all have to keep working hard to get better? It's a total bore. Conversely, when a kid defies convention and speaks his mind, we're all ready to crucify. The whole enterprise just seems inherently flawed.
