Colgate & Cornell @ RPI & Union (2/11, 2/12)

Re: Colgate & Cornell @ RPI & Union (2/11, 2/12)

Just got a phone call from (presumably) the HFH box office reminding me that Saturday's game has a 3:30pm start instead of the 7pm start.

I don't have my tickets in front of me; was the time misprinted on the ticket? I could see that to be the only reason HFH would call the ticket holders...

Remember, the time was changed for the Cornell game to accomodate broadcasting on the NHL Network: http://www.rpiathletics.com/news/2010/10/15/MHOCK_1015103546.aspx

Given that the change was made once the season had already started, it wasn't so much a misprint as an in-season schedule change. I'm guessing phonecalls weren't made for the BU game because that announcement was close enough to the actual game that the box office didn't think it was necessary.

Stop me if you've heard this one before:

From the Union Hockey twitter account - Friday night's game vs. Cornell at Messa Rink will be a Whiteout! Wear white to the game!

Re: Colgate & Cornell @ RPI & Union (2/11, 2/12)

Imitation is the biggest form of flattery. As long as both programs dominate Cornell who cares?

I seriously doubt you guys understand how good Cornell has been recently given that you're all talking about Colgate. Calling Cornell for a 3 pt weekend this weekend with a win in Troy and a tie in Messa

Re: Colgate & Cornell @ RPI & Union (2/11, 2/12)

css,

I think they all understand it. That's why they're saying that they can't look ahead to Cornell before playing Colgate. I think Union wins Friday, though. They're just looking too good. I see Cornell sweeping the season series with RPI though.

Seeing how they beat us pretty good a few weeks back and all of a sudden they are right behind us in the standings, and they always seem to be near the top this time of year, we understand. All you need to do is look at the standings to figure that out. Also aware that they came back from down 3-1 vs. SLU to win 4-3 in OT on Saturday.

We also understand that this is an extremely competitive league from top to bottom which is why we are talking about Colgate FIRST, seeing how we play them FIRST, and they are coming off their first win. Its called not looking ahead. But you also need to understand that over the last few weeks, we haven't been too shabby either, and have only lost once at home this year.

It's not like the whiteout was original when RPI did it for the first time.

It's not like you actually share a primary color with Cornell and actually "need" your fans to wear white. Save your "whiteout" for when you play a team that wears garnet.

Good point, but by those guidelines Union would never get to whiteout anyone.:p

IIRC last years whiteout was against Princeton and fans received a white t-shirt. This year's whiteout gift is a rally towel.

At least it isn't a pair of white gloves.

Teams use the *insert color* out for a big game, not when an opposing fan base has a similar color. Growing up in Pennsylvania, my first thought turns to PSU and their white outs. After losing to Cornell in the ECAC championship game last season, and with them climbing the ecac standings, this constitutes a big game for us.

RPI box office called me today at 1:30 to remind me of change, I've long been aware of change but appreciate the call.

So, you're saying that the Whiteout is more of a lame attempt to pump up fans with a random gift (a la the BRF!) than an attempt to encourage fans to show up in white because their opponent is wearing a similar color. In other words, "We're not copying this promotion of yours, we're copying that other one!" The fact that they're playing the same team that we are when we're doing our Whiteout must be pure coincidence then.

I was not aware you guys were doing a whiteout this weekend. Then I hope our ripoff leads to lots of white in the rinks and 0 points for Cornell :)

This is a big game for Cornell as well, though it's taking us older fans a while to wrap our heads around it. There's nothing to prevent this from becoming a strong rivalry and hopefully our fans won't display the sort of arrogance one associates with say BC or Minnesota. If a team's ahead of you in both the standings and the PWR that team is a serious competitor, and all bygone years' hardware are neither jot nor tittle. Union and RPI both fit the bill and we will be fortunate to escape this trip unswept.

These games are going to test whether Cornell's recent surge was just the by-product of an easy stretch or whether we really are playing better and bringing a young team together under The System. I hope we take at least 1 point this weekend. 2 or more is the amen break.
